The Oregon State Beavers initially signed just 11 football prospects in its 2021 recruiting class, the smallest in program history. But there was a method to the madness, as Jonathan Smith and his coaching staff believed they could take advantage of the NCAA's transfer portal and late 2021 signees to bolster the roster throughout the late spring and early summer. On Wednesday, Oregon State secured its seventh FBS transfer, as Penn State wide receiver and former Under Armour All-American selection John Dunmore Jr. announced his commitment to the Beavers.

Dunmore took an official visit to Corvallis last weekend, and the combination of the academic calendar and the college football offseason plans, it seemed likely a commitment was imminent. Coming out of high school as part of the 2019 recruiting class, the the 6-foot-2, 172-pound pass-catcher was rated the nation's No. 120 overall prospect and the No. 20 wide receiver. Dunmore Jr. committed to Penn State over offers from more than 30 schools, including Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas A&M and many others. - The Oregonian

Jerry Howard and Antwan Owens earned their degrees from Georgia Tech this past weekend and now move on to new campuses to continue their pursuit of the NFL. Howard, who played running back and linebacker for the Yellow Jackets, will play at Towson, an FCS school near Baltimore. Owens, who played defensive end and tackle for the Jackets, is headed to Jackson State, an FCS school that has won attention for its new coach, Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. Both announced their decisions over the weekend. Both members of the 2017 signing class, each has one season of eligibility remaining. "My goal is to help the team out as much as I can, do my part," Howard told the AJC. "But my dream is to get to the NFL and get my real-estate business started." - Atlanta Journal Constitution

Western Kentucky's quarterback competition has lost some of its competition. Tyrrell Pigrome, the Hilltoppers' starting quarterback last fall, has entered the transfer portal, the program confirmed to the Daily News on Wednesday. Chris Hummer of 247Sports was the first to report Pigrome's entrance in the portal. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound graduate transfer from Maryland started 10 games last year and appeared in 11. He completed 171 of 297 passes for 1,603 yards and nine touchdowns with two interceptions - both of which came in a loss to Georgia State in the LendingTree Bowl. The dual-threat quarterback was WKU's second-leading rusher with 337 yards and four touchdowns on 105 attempts. Pigrome came from Maryland last spring, where he had 2,407 yards of offense in 34 games, including seven starts. - BG Daily News

Georgia Tech always will be home, Jerry Howard said. But, with a second chance to play a senior season, the Yellow Jackets running back wants to go somewhere where he knows he can get on the field and play his position. Howard announced his decision Jan. 19. Speaking last week, he said he already had heard from a variety of schools, including Purdue, Appalachian State and Texas State. He said he has no preference about FBS, FCS or conference. While the 2020 season was his senior season, he and all fall- and winter-sports athletes have been granted an extra season of eligibility by the NCAA because of COVID-19. - Atlanta Journal Constitution

It looks like the FAU Owls will add a second former Penn State player to their 2021 recruiting class. Former Nittany Lions wide receiver John Dunmore announced on his Instagram story on Thursday that he's going to transfer to Florida Atlantic. His transfer to the Owls will reunite him with Michael Johnson Jr., a former Penn State quarterback who joined FAU's 2021 recruiting class as a transfer on Wednesday. The 6-foot-1, 179-pound wide receiver was ranked as a four-star prospect after finishing his high school career at Chaminade-Madonna. He also played at American Heritage-Delray and Cardinal Gibbons. He played one game for Penn State against Purdue on Oct. 5, 2019. Dunmore redshirted the 2019 season, withdrew from the program in October and has been training in Florida, according to 247 Sports. He is expected to join FAU as a redshirt freshman and have four years of eligibility left. - Sun-Sentinel

Tyrrell Pigrome ran for two touchdowns and the defense scored two more on back-to-back takeaways as Western Kentucky scored four unanswered touchdowns in the second half to defeat Florida International 38-21 on Saturday. FIU (0-5, 0-3 Conference USA) was first on the board when JJ Holloman pulled in a 28-yard pass from Max Bortenschlager midway through the opening quarter, and the Panthers led 13-10 at halftime.

The Hilltoppers (4-6, 3-3) rallied for 35 unanswered points beginning in the first half. But defense turned the tide in the third quarter when Bortenschlager was hit and fumbled. Roger Cray picked up the ball on the bounce and ran it 19 yards to the end zone to put Western Kentucky ahead 17-13. On FIU's next play, Eli Brown picked off Bortgenschlager for a 22-yard interception return and touchdown. Brayden Narveson kicked a pair of 32-yard field goals for Western Kentucky (2-4). Pigrome came on for starter Kevaris Thomas late in the fourth quarter and finished 4-of-8 passing for 73 yards.   10/23/20 - Elorm LumorrSr/2022, Towson + More +

Elorm Lumor is ready. The world learned Lumor had his eligibility reinstated by the NCAA last week, but there was never an official word on where he was physically in the process. That came Monday. Lumor being named one of the starting defensive ends was not a surprise, but it does suggest he will be ready to play in Week 1. It was not clear when his surprise return was announced when exactly he returned the program as an active participant. Now the Scarlet Knights need to keep their best pass rusher healthy. - Star Ledger

The Towson University athletics department will not be playing an intercollegiate football schedule during the 2021 spring season. Towson football will now prepare for the traditional 2021 fall season. This decision was made in conjunction with Towson University student-athletes, coaches, department of athletics administrators and medical personnel. The football team will prepare to hold traditional spring practices to lower the risks of long-term injuries and get ready for the 2021 season. All precautions will be taken, including COVID screening for players, coaches and staff. With today's announcement, Towson has opted out of the spring 2021 football schedule in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Towson football student-athletes will retain their year of eligibility per the NCAA. Abilene Christian, Campbell, Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky, Houston Baptist, Old Dominion, Sacramento State and Stephen F.   10/16/20 - Elorm LumorrSr/2022, Towson + More +

Greg Schiano is not the only guy coming back to Rutgers under unexpected circumstances this fall. Elorm Lumor, who was the Scarlet Knights' best pass rusher the last two seasons before declaring for the NFL draft, has returned to the program. He was a surprise inclusion when Rutgers released its updated team roster on Monday with less than two weeks until its season opener at Michigan State on Oct. 24. Lumor signed with an agent after entering the draft pool in January and did his pre-draft training at TEST Football Academy in Martinsville. But he appears to have been granted an NCAA waiver reinstating his eligibility after going undrafted and unsigned.

There is precedent for Lumor's situation, but not much. The NCAA restored Arizona State punter Michael Turk's eligibility in June after he also signed with an agent and went undrafted and unsigned. And Turk participated in the NFL Scouting Combine, while Lumor did not get an invitation and then had his pro day canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lumor had one year of eligibility remaining when he left Rutgers in January. The Piscataway native tied for the team lead in sacks in each of the last two seasons, notching three sacks in 2019 and four in 2018. Lumor also led the Scarlet Knights in tackles-for-loss in 2018 with seven. - Star Ledger

Penn State's wide receiver room shrunk by one player Wednesday afternoon. Lions247's Sean Fitz first reported that redshirt freshman wide receiver John Dunmore had withdrawn from Penn State and has been training at home in South Florida for weeks. Fitz's report also stated Dunmore had not entered the NCAA's transfer portal as of Wednesday afternoon. The university confirmed the redshirt freshman was no longer at the school. "John Dunmore has withdrawn from Penn State this semester for personal reasons," a statement from a Penn State spokesperson read. The redshirt freshman came to Penn State in its 2019 recruiting class as a four-star wide receiver and was competing for playing time at the position with nine other wideouts this season. He only appeared in one game last year and did not record any receptions. - Centre Times
