UTEP tailback Deion Hankins enters this season in a fundamentally different position from his previous two years. The Parkland alum, who graduated as El Paso's all-time leading rusher, is technically still a freshman, but one of the upshots of the strange freebie year of 2020 is that he enters this year as the most accomplished freshman UTEP's ever had. In his second year in the program after a 2019 redshirt he averaged 4.9 yards per carry as the featured tailback and scored nine touchdowns in seven games. Now he's in his third year, part of a small four-man tailback corps that nonetheless counts as the deepest spot on the roster. It also includes Quardraiz Wadley, now in his sixth year of a UTEP career that began with him backing up Aaron Jones in 2016, fifth-year junior Ronald Awatt, who averaged 4.5 yards per carry last year, and second-year freshman Willie Eldridge, the most highly rated player of the 2020 recruiting class.

This is the spot on the offense UTEP feels best about, and also one that will provide leadership for everyone. "It feels different," Hankins said. "I've been here for a while, I'm coming up on my third year. Time flies. I need to step it up with my leadership and all around as a player. "We've got a good group and we all bring something different. I bring strength, toughness. We're all tough. I try to lead more by example than by words. I definitely have to step it up. As camp progresses, I need to be an all-around leader." - El Paso Times

Fifth-year UNC football standout Beau Corrales is set to begin his final season in a Tar Heel uniform, hoping to avoid the kind of injuries that have plagued his four years in Chapel Hill. His most recent run-in with the injury bug was a sports hernia last year that required surgery and forced him to miss the team's final handful of games of the season. Back on the field in 2021 for an additional season of college football - that thanks to the NCAA allowing all student-athletes an extra year of eligibility due to the Covid-19 pandemic that affected so much of the 2020 season - Corrales is ready to make a difference for the ACC Coastal-favorite Tar Heels. But he's also got some side activities going on in the mean time.

On Saturday, it was announced that the Georgetown, Texas native will be teaming with Bojangles this season. That marriage is thanks to the NCAA's new NIL rules allowing student-athletes to earn money from their name, image and likeness while still in college. The popular fried chicken chain sent out a tweet on Saturday evening that touted their new partnership, stating that it's "Beau time." - Keeping It Heel

Off the gridiron, the 6-foot-2, 205-pound signal caller from San Antonio, Texas by way of MacArthur HS assists with the program's annual Bobcat Giving Tree in conjunction with the Texas State cheerleading program and university police department.   Arizona's linebacker room continues to be in a state of flux. After an offseason filled mostly with acquisitions, the Wildcats could lose second-year freshman Derick Mourning, who announced Wednesday that he has put his name in the NCAA transfer portal. Mourning, a three-star recruit from Katy, Texas, showed great promise in the spring, when he ran with the first-team defense at the "Mike" linebacker spot. Mourning (6-3, 234) appeared in all five of Arizona's games in 2020, including one start, recording 10 tackles and one pass breakup. Mourning would have had a chance to start in 2021, although the UA staff has beefed up the LB group via the portal. Arizona has added four linebackers. The incoming freshman class also features several 'backers. Mourning's decision comes after the July 1 deadline to ensure eligibility for the '21 season. If he wants to play elsewhere this year, he'll have to get a waiver. - Arizona Star News

Another Pitt lineman is moving on, adding to the Panthers' growing list of offseason departures. Liam Dick, a reserve offensive tackle, has entered the transfer portal, according to both 247 Sports and Rivals. Dick will have four years of eligibility wherever he lands. Players can technically still return to their old teams after testing the portal, but that's a rare occurrence. Dick never played for the Panthers after redshirting in 2019 and being a backup last fall. Dick, an Ontario native, was a two-star recruit in Pitt's 2019 class who fielded 11 offers, including interest from Louisville, North Carolina and Washington State. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

Arkansas defensive tackle Nick Fulwider has entered the transfer portal, a UA source confirmed on Tuesday. The 6-7, 290-pound redshirt junior from Tyrone, Ga., had not been able to crack the two deep for the Razorbacks. Fulwider had played just five snaps in one game, the 2018 season opener against Eastern Illinois, and did not record any statistics. The Razorbacks have had five defensive linemen transfer or announce their intention to transfer since the season ended, with Fulwider joining defensive ends Julius Coates and Blayne Toll, and tackles David Porter and Enoch Jackson Jr. Arkansas has transfer defensive tackles Markell Utsey (Missouri) and John Ridgeway (Illinois State) and transfer defensive end Tre Williams coming to campus for the 2021 season. - Northwest Arkansas Times

The Texas State football team continues preparations for the 2021 season on Tuesday, March 23, when the Bobcats open spring practices at Bobcat Stadium. The Bobcats completed their winter workouts and will have a total of 15 practices distributed on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays and culminating with the 2021 Texas State Spring Game on April 24. Texas State will hold its first spring practices since the COVID-19 Pandemic cut short last year's spring practice schedule. Head coach Jake Spavital heads into his third season with the Bobcats and brings back most of his two-deep on both offense and defense. The Bobcats also have 10 newcomers who have been on campus since January and two transfers who sat out last season. - San Marcos Record

Five North Carolina seniors had myriad personal reasons for choosing to return for another final football season, yet they each overlapped on one in particular. They believe the Tar Heels have to potential to do something special next season. Linebackers Tyrone Hopper and Tomon Fox, receiver Beau Corrales, tight end Garrett Walston and kicker Grayson Atkins, in a normal year, would have exhausted their eligibility after the Heels' 41-27 loss to Texas A&M in the Orange Bowl. But thanks to an NCAA waiver passed last summer for all fall sports, they had the option to play another senior year with the thought that it won't be interrupted by COVID-19. They're the only football players who took advantage of it at UNC. - Raleigh News Observer

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced Canadian Liam Dobson to take matters into his own hands. Last month, the Maine Back Bears offensive lineman entered the NCAA transfer portal after the Colonial Athletic Association postponed its fall football schedule because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dobson, a hulking six-foot-three, 340-pound Ottawa native, said Tuesday that he's still mulling over where he'll play his senior season. Maine plans to play six CAA games starting in March. But Dobson said a factor in his decision to transfer was wanting to play at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level to enhance his NFL draft stock. The Black Bears compete in the Football Championship Subdivision, which is a level below the top-ranked FBS. - Toronto Star
