  09/03/22 - Quinn EwersrJr/2025, Texas + More +

Quinn Ewers passed for 225 yards and two touchdowns in his debut at quarterback for Texas and the Longhorns rolled over Louisiana-Monroe 52-10 Saturday night in the season-opener for both programs. The win against an overmatched opponent was still a much-needed one for second-year coach Steve Sarkisian after the Longhorns went 5-7 in 2021. Texas next week hosts No. 1 Alabama, where Sarkisian was offensive coordinator when the Crimson Tide won the national championship in 2020. Ewers was one of the top recruits in the country out of high school near Dallas but skipped his senior season and enrolled at Ohio State. He was buried on the Buckeyes' depth chart and took just two snaps last season before transferring. He won the starting job over Hudson Card, who was the Texas starter to open the 2021 season.

Ewers said he was surprisingly calm in his first college start. "I didn't have any butterflies going into today. A little bit on the first play, but not even as much as I did in high school," Ewers said. "I liked it. I enjoyed the game." Ewers had a solid night despite some struggles to hit deep throws and his biggest plays came on catch-and-run hookups his receivers turned into long gains. His favorite target on the night was tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, who caught six passes for 85 yards and a first-quarter touchdown. Bijan Robinson finished with 111 total yards on 13 touches, and two third-quarter touchdowns on a 16-yard catch and a 9-yard run. The third-year running back has a touchdown in 12 of his last 13 games. "It's a lot of fun," Ewers said of the Texas offensive and its multiple playmakers. "Especially when things are clicking on all levels." - Texas/AP College Football

ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 99. Andrew Mukuba, S, Clemson, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stat: 48 tackles (30 solo). Last year's ranking: NR. When Lannden Zanders went down in Clemson's opener against Georgia last year, Mukuba -- a true freshman -- was thrust into a starting job. He didn't miss a beat. For the season, Mukuba held opposing QBs to less than 50% completions, had seven pass breakups, allowed just three completions of 20 yards or more and surrendered less than half a yard per coverage snap. Meanwhile, he finished fourth on the team with 48 tackles. His role in 2022 gets even bigger, however, as he's the only established starter in Clemson's new-look secondary. - ESPN.com

Name, Image and Likeness has been a game changer for the college football world. NCAA athletes are able to make money off the field in a way we have never seen before. Texas running back Bijan Robinson is a prime example of a player taking full advantage of his NIL opportunities. The Heisman hopeful has built an impressive portfolio of NIL deals over the past calendar year. Robinson is working with Lamborghini, Raising Cane's, C4 Energy and many more notable brands. His latest NIL deal might be his best one yet. We have seen a fair share of creative NIL deals in this new era of college sports but this one might take the cake. "Bijan Mustardson" is now available for anyone to purchase. It is sure to be a popular condiment at Texas Longhorn tailgates in the fall. - Longhorns Wire

  08/22/22 - Quinn EwersrJr/2025, Texas + More +

Former Ohio State football player Quinn Ewers has been named Texas' starting quarterback for the 2022 season. Ewers originally committed to the Longhorns as the top-rated player in the 2022 class before flipping to the Buckeyes two months after the decision. He then proceeded to make a list of significant decisions that eventually landed him in Austin as the starter. The first step towards that was by reclassifying to the 2021 class and enrolling six months earlier than expected as the four scholarship quarterbacks on OSU's roster. He arrived in August just a few days into fall camp, and his time in Columbus lasted about four months, with his only in-game experience coming in the form of two snaps at the end of a long-decided 56-7 home win over Michigan State.

He chose Texas not long after entering the transfer portal, putting him in a battle with Hudson Card, who was the projected starter coming into his third year in the program. Instead, the Ewers era will begin in Austin on Sept. 3 when the Longhorns host ULM. The former perfectly-rated recruit will get his first taste of the national spotlight the following week when Alabama comes to town as the top-ranked team in the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll. Ewers is one of two quarterbacks from Ohio State's 2021 roster playing for other teams this year but is the only one that's officially been named a starter. Jack Miller is now at Florida, where was projected to serve as a backup to Anthony Richard before undergoing thumb surgery. C.J. Stroud returns as the Buckeyes' starter in 2022, while Kyle McCord is his unquestioned backup. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Texas wide receiver Isaiah Neyor went down with a knee injury last week. Lost in that news is the Longhorns have a very good alternative that could play on the outside. Jordan Whittington is not receiving much credit as a downfield threat, but his history tells us he can stretch defenses. Last year, Whittington made an acrobatic catch that helped Texas beat TCU. The year before he won a 50-50 ball on the sideline against UTEP for an impressive catch. Despite popular opinion, the talented redshirt junior has shown he can posterize defenses downfield. Whittington has the size, speed, strength and physicality to soften the loss of Neyor. While boundary receiver is not Whittington's best position, Steve Sarkisian believes he is capable of moving around to accommodate the offense. - Longhorns Wire

As the morning sun beat down on the practice field Thursday, the first day of the University of Houston's football preseason camp, Matthew Golden looked like a seasoned veteran rather than a true freshman. Golden, a first-year receiver from Klein Cain, made a move to the right and snagged the ball in the air with one hand before taking off downfield. He made another catch. And another. On campus since January, Golden has already drawn praise from coaches and teammates. His position coach, Daikiel Shorts Jr., said Golden has the physique of a "Greek god." Nathaniel "Tank" Dell, likely envisioning big passing numbers paired with Golden this fall, offered a recent preview: "That man is going to be special. You're going to see this year." Then came Thursday morning, when coach Dana Holgorsen confirmed what many had speculated: Go ahead and pencil Golden into a starting spot at one of UH's outside receiver spots. "Right now, Matt Golden is the starting 'Z' receiver. I can tell you that right now," Holgorsen told reporters before the first practice.

Golden, who turned 19 on Monday, brings impressive credentials to the Cougars. He had more than two dozen scholarship offers, switching his commitment from TCU to UH in the final month before the December signing period. He is rated the third-highest ranked player to sign with the Cougars in the modern recruiting era, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, behind only defensive tackle Ed Oliver (2016) and wide receiver Deontay Greenberry (2012). "I feel like Matthew has the talent to be the next star receiver at UH," Dell said. - Houston Chronicle

The battle for the starting Texas quarterback job is underway in Austin. Competition is bringing out the best in each quarterback. In the minimal footage we have seen, both quarterbacks have been accurate. Nevertheless, one throwing motion caught some attention. Texas fans are familiar with Hudson Card's strong skillset and passing ability, but recently got to see Quinn Ewers' arm talent on full display. Watching the Southlake Carroll gunslinger passing the ball in Texas practice gear makes it easier to visualize Ewers leading the Longhorns into a real game. Maalik Murphy is certainly a player who could factor into Texas' long-term plans at quarterback as well.

Despite last year's inconsistency at quarterback, there is confidence that coach Steve Sarkisian will make the best quarterback decision for this team. Now that he is more knowledgable of his personnel than last season, it could be easier to determine the right quarterback fit. Sarkisian could have his quarterback selected in the next two weeks. - Austin American Statesman

The Texas Longhorns brought in an exceptionally talented seven-man freshman class of offensive linemen highlighted by five-stars Kelvin Banks and Devon Campbell. The freshman group is already standing out just days into fall camp. Star running back Bijan Robinson is raving about the newcomers and the returners from last season. Earlier this week offensive tackle Kelvin Banks (6-5, 318) received a lot of attention for great work. Rave reviews keep pouring in for the mammoth-size freshman offensive linemen. "This offseason, they've been working extremely hard on different things, on how to make the run game that much better, setting up holes, setting up angles. I see a lot of angles that are setting up to create open space. Even just these two practices - I know they're not in pads yet - but I see so much improvement on the offensive line." An improved offensive line could spearhead the Texas offense to new heights this season. More protection for the winner of the quarterback battle and more holes for Robinson in the rushing attack is a recipe for success. - Austin American Statesman

Alabama senator Tommy Tuberville and West Virginia senator Joe Manchin intend to draft a bill to present to Congress that would regulate name, image and likeness activities within college sports, their offices announced Wednesday. The pair of U.S. senators sent a letter, dated Wednesday, to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey outlining their current concerns about NIL and asking for the SEC's input. Tuberville's office told AL.com that letters were also sent to a "broad range of stakeholders, including [athletics directors], commissioners, student groups, etc." Manchin, a Democrat, is a childhood friend of Alabama coach Nick Saban. Tuberville, a Republican and former Auburn coach, also has a long-standing friendship with Saban.

Tuberville told Sports Illustrated that both he and Manchin have spoken to Saban about the issues surrounding NIL. "I've talked to all my [coaching] buddies. They've never seen anything like it," Tuberville told SI. "When you don't have guidelines and direction, no matter what you are doing, you are lost. They are all lost right now." Tuberville told The Paul Finebaum Show later Wednesday that he has spoken to multiple coaches and conference commissioners about the topic. "Joe Manchin and I will take all this information," Tuberville said. "We will try to set some guidelines -- not overreach our bounds, not try to deter anybody making any money [among] student-athletes." - Birmingham News
