While stumping for Bijan Robinson's Heisman Trophy candidacy Monday, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian rattled off a bunch of statistics. Robinson has accounted for 1,894 yards of offense this season. That's the most in college football. The junior running back has scored 20 touchdowns. Only Pitt's Israel Abanikanda has more. And Robinson has rushed for 1,580 yards and 18 touchdowns, both of which lead the Big 12. "If we were 10-2 right now and playing for a Big 12 championship and maybe on the cusp of the College Football Playoff, I think there'd be no question this guy would be in New York for the Heisman," Sarkisian said. - Austin American Statesman

Texas wide receiver Xavier Worthy earned Big 12 freshman of the year honors in 2021, but his numbers have regressed this season: nine fewer catches, 305 fewer yards and three fewer touchdowns. He has been Texas' leading receiver both years, however. - Austin American Statesman

  12/02/22 - Quinn EwersrJr/2025, Texas + More +

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers has thrown for 1,808 yards, 14 touchdowns and six interceptions, and completed just 56.6% of his passes. The Longhorns thew for 21 touchdowns. Last year, Texas had 29. The focal point of any passing attack is the quarterback. Before spraining his clavicle, Ewers, a redshirt freshman, had great moments against then-No. 1 Alabama in September. And the former five-star recruit was as good as advertised in a 49-0 win over Oklahoma in October. But he also threw for fewer than 200 yards in each of his last four games, and in that span he had only three completions of 25 or more yards.

Last week, Sarkisian said he's not going to anoint Ewers as the unquestioned starter for next season. Hudson Card, Maalik Murphy and Charles Wright are on scholarship, and five-star phenom Arch Manning is committed to UT's upcoming recruiting class. Ewers understands that his coach believes offseason position battles are healthy. "I'm ready for any competition," he later told reporters. - Austin American Statesman

NOV 28 BIG 12 CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bijan Robinson, UT, RB, Jr.,...Robinson rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns in leading Texas to a 38-27 win over Baylor with 150 of those yards coming in the second half, including 115 in the fourth quarter while the game was in the balance. Both of Robinson's touchdowns gave Texas the lead with the first providing a 14-9 advantage in the first quarter, and the second putting the Longhorns ahead for good at 31-27 midway through the fourth quarter. It was his ninth 100-yard rushing game in the last 10 outings. He has rushed for a touchdown in 10-of-12 games this year.

Robinson is the only player in the nation this season with more than 1,500 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, and he is also the first in the storied tradition of Longhorn running backs to accomplish that feat in a single season. He leads the nation in tandem yards (1,894) and is second in total touchdowns (20). His 1,580 rushing yards make him just the sixth player in UT history to reach 1,500 in a season. He is also one of just two running backs nationally with double-digit rushing touchdowns and at least two receiving scores. His 18 rushing touchdowns this season are the fourth-most nationally, and the fifth-most in a single season on Texas record. It brings his career touchdown totals to 41 overall (fourth all-time at UT) and 33 rushing (eight all-time at UT). - Big 12 Football

  11/28/22 - Jaylan FordSr/2024, Texas + More +

NOV 28 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaylan Ford, UT, LB, Jr.,...Ford compiled 13 tackles, two tackles for a loss, an interception that he returned for 18 yards, one pass breakup and one pressure in helping Texas to its 38-27 win over Baylor. The interception helped secure the game as it came with the Longhorns leading, 31-27, with 6:28 to go and set up the offense at the Baylor 42 on the way to a touchdown for the final score. The Texas defense held the Bears to 56 total yards in the second half, including just four yards in the fourth quarter with their only score in the half coming on a defensive touchdown.

His second tackle for loss began a three-and-out for Baylor where the Longhorns scored on the ensuing possession for their first lead at 14-9. Ford is the only Power Five player with four interceptions and three forced fumbles (one of only three in the FBS and the only linebacker). He is also the only FBS player with four interceptions, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries, along with being the only FBS linebacker with four interceptions. Ford is second in the Big 12 in both tackles (109) and tackles per game (9.08). - Big 12 Football

Bijan Robinson rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns, Jaylan Ford made his fourth interception of the season, and No. 24 Texas defeated Baylor 38-27 on Friday. The Longhorns (8-4, 6-3 Big 12) kept alive their chances of making the conference title game. If Kansas can beat No. 15 Kansas State on Saturday, Texas will face No. 4 TCU for the Big 12 championship. Robinson, who carried 29 times, gained 65 of Texas' 75 yards on its go-ahead drive, scoring from the 1 to give the Longhorns a 31-27 lead with 8:25 remaining. On Baylor's next possession, Ford intercepted a pass by Blake Shapen, tying a Texas record for picks in a season by a linebacker. The Longhorns converted the turnover into a 42-yard touchdown drive, the final 11 on a run by Robinson's backup, Roschon Johnson. He finished with 13 carries for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Baylor trailed by five early in the fourth quarter when Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers dropped back from his 33. A blitzing Al Walcott forced a fumble. Lineman Gabe Hall scooped up the ball and ran 16 yards for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion put Baylor ahead 27-24.

Baylor (6-6, 4-5) sacked Ewers five times. He completed 12 of 16 passes for 194 yards. Baylor made a quick move toward ruining the Longhorns' senior day celebration. First the Bears pressured Ewers into a safety when he was flagged for intentional grounding in the end zone. Then Shapen connected with Jaylen Ellis for a 47-yard touchdown and a 9-0 lead midway through the first quarter. Ellis caught only one other pass this season before that one, a 50-yarder. But Texas responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive that Ewers, not much of a runner, finished with a 3-yard burst up the middle. Baylor punter Issac Power contributed to the Texas cause with an 11-yard shank, and the Longhorns needed to only travel 29 yards for a second score. There was an exchange of field goals, and a 45-yard Baylor touchdown drive that required just five plays and 32 seconds. Shapen finished with a 14-yard pass to tight end Ben Sims for a 19-17 halftime lead. Texas put itself in danger with three false starts and a lost fumble by Jordan Whittington early in the third quarter. But a determined Whittington turned a short pass into a 19-yard gain, setting up a 1-yard score by Johnson late in the period. - Eastern Michigan/AP College Football

NOV 21 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Bijan Robinson, UT, RB, Jr.,...Robinson rushed for a career-high 243 yards on 25 carries (9.7 ypc) and a career-best four touchdowns in leading Texas to a 55-14 road victory over Kansas. It was his eighth 100-yard rushing game in the last nine outings and second of 200 in the last three. He's also has rushed for a touchdown in nine of 11 games this year. Robinson is now tied for fifth on Texas' all-time rushing list with 3,231 yards. The junior is sixth in UT history in career tandem yards (4,036) and 10th in all-purpose yards (4,052).

This season, Robinson is the only player in the nation with more than 1,400 rushing yards and 300 receiving yards, and one of just two running backs nationally with double-digit rushing touchdowns and at least two receiving scores. In the game against Kansas, Robinson scored four of Texas' first five touchdowns in pushing the Longhorns out to a 38-0 lead early in the third quarter. Two of the touchdowns went for more than 15 yards, including his last one of 32 yards. Just before halftime, he had a 24-yard carry that was inches short of a touchdown with one second remaining before he vaulted over the line on the next play as time expired for a 31-0 halftime lead. Robinson's 32-yard touchdown run was his sixth rushing touchdown and seventh scoring play of at least 30 yards this season. His 243 yards rushing were the 16th-most in a game in UT history. - Big 12 Football

Bijan Robinson ran for career-highs of 243 yards and four touchdowns, helping Texas earn a bit of revenge against Kansas with a 55-14 victory Saturday that kept alive the Longhorns' hopes of playing for the Big 12 championship. The Longhorns (7-4, 5-3), who lost a 57-56 overtime thriller to the Jayhawks a year ago in Austin, need to beat Baylor next weekend while, coincidentally, getting some help from Kansas. The Jayhawks (6-5, 3-5) must also beat Kansas State in their rivalry game for Texas to play fourth-ranked TCU in the title game in Arlington. Quinn Ewers added 107 yards passing and a touchdown, and Jonathon Brooks ran for 108 yards and two scores, as the Longhorns bounced back from a dismal game against the Horned Frogs in which they didn't score an offensive touchdown. They scored on nine straight possessions after an opening punt and finished with 427 yards rushing. The Jayhawks' Jalon Daniels, starting for the first time since a shoulder injury six weeks ago, threw for 230 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Devin Neal ran 13 times for 51 yards. Robinson, who was held to 29 yards rushing by the Horned Frogs, eclipsed that total midway through the first quarter Saturday, then kept on going. He bulldozed into the end zone from 2-yards out to give the Longhorns the lead, then ripped off two long runs on their next possession to extend the advantage to 14-0. Robinson nearly had a third first-half TD run, but it was called back by a penalty and Texas had to kick a field goal. The Jayhawks were hoping to get a boost from the return of Daniels, who had them off to a 5-0 start before his injury on Oct. 8. But they went 3-and-out on their first two drives, failed on fourth-and-2 on the next one, then had a TD wiped out by a penalty and watched Jacob Borcila miss the ensuing field-goal try. Ewers added a touchdown pass to Keilan Robinson later in the second quarter. And after Daniels was picked off by Jaylan Ford, the Longhorns turned again to Robinson, who appeared to have scurried 25 yards for a touchdown but was ruled out at the 1-yard line with 1 second left in the half - then leapt over the pile on the next play anyway. Robinson had 172 yards and three touchdowns as Texas took a 31-0 lead to the locker room. - Texas/AP College Football

  11/07/22 - Jaylan FordSr/2024, Texas + More +

NOV 7 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jaylan Ford, UT, LB, Jr.,...Ford collected an interception, a fumble recovery, a forced fumble and a team-leading 10 tackles, including six solo, in leading Texas to a 34-27 win at No. 13 Kansas State. His interception, which he returned 18 yards, set up the Longhorns at the Wildcats' 27-yard line with 1:07 left in the first half. The UT offense used the turnover to score a touchdown for a 31-10 halftime lead. It was Ford's second career interception. He later collected his second career fumble recovery with 24 seconds left in the game, which sealed the win. Ford also had a forced fumble in the third quarter. The junior LB registered his fifth double-digit tackle game this season and continues to lead the Big 12 with 9.11 tackles per game and 82 total. - Big 12 Football

Bijan Robinson romped for 209 yards and a touchdown, Quinn Ewers threw for 197 yards and two more scores, and Texas held off No. 13 Kansas State 34-27 on Saturday night for the Longhorns' sixth straight win over the Wildcats. Xavier Worthy had two touchdown catches and Roschon Johnson added a TD run for the Longhorns (6-3, 4-2 Big 12), who built a 31-10 halftime lead and then had to make a defensive stand in the closing minutes to preserve the victory. The Wildcats (6-3, 4-2) stuffed Robinson on third down with 4:26 left to get the ball back, and Adrian Martinez quickly moved them close to midfield. But after converting fourth down with a pass to Deuce Vaughn with 34 seconds to go, the senior quarterback - back in the lineup after an injury - fumbled the ball away.

Martinez threw for 329 yards and two TDs, but he also threw an interception that turned into a Texas touchdown and had the fumble the clinched the game. Vaughn had 73 yards rushing along with 86 yards and a touchdown receiving. Kansas State has not beaten the Longhorns since 2016. The momentum swung to Texas on the fourth play of the game, when Kansas State's Julius Brents earned a questionable targeting penalty, taking the Wildcats' best cover cornerback off the field for the rest of the game. The Longhorns proceeded to reel off three straight touchdown drives, all going eight plays and 75 yards. Robinson capped the first with a 36-yard run, Johnson finished the second from nine yards out, and Worthy capitalized on Brents' absence by hauling in the first of his two first-half TDs to give the Longhorns a 21-10 lead. The only time the Kansas State defense got off the field came when Johnson fumbled at the end of a 37-yard gain. But the Wildcats promptly punted away, Texas added a field goal, and then Martinez was picked off in the closing minutes to set up Worthy's second touchdown reception and extend the lead to 31-10 at halftime. The Longhorns had 352 yards of offense by that point. Robinson had 161 on the ground, the best half of his sterling career. - Texas/AP College Football
