  07/14/21 - Kingsley JonathanrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-3, 259 (DS#66 DE) + More +

Syracuse defensive end Kingsley Jonathan was named a First Team Academic All-American on Monday, the only football player in the ACC to earn the honor. The award is handed out annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America, honoring players who exhibit a combination of both athletic and academic achievement. He is Syracuse's first honoree since tight end Cam McPherson won the award in 2016, and one of just 16 in program history. Jonathan had 5.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and 32 tackles last year, his fourth playing for the Orange. He has maintained a 3.71 grade-point average while majoring in information management and technology. Jonathan has also posted a grade-point average of at least 3.5 in every semester, while being involved in a variety of off-field initiatives. - The Post-Standard

  07/02/21 - *Sean TuckerrSo/2023, Syracuse, 5-09, 207 (DS#23 RB) + More +

Syracuse's running back room rapidly depleted early last season. It gets a clean slate this summer with a quartet of backs that have produced in games, working behind a healthy offensive line to try to improve one of the nation's worst rushing attacks. All eyes will be fixated on the quarterback competition this summer, but the ground game might be more important to SU's success. "To me, that's what football is all about," coach Dino Babers said at the end of spring. "If it was a 7-on-7 league, it'd be on ABC and ESPN and everybody would be running around with their flags on, and they'd have all kind of major sponsors. "That's not what football is. Football is about taking somebody and moving them someplace they don't want to go against their will." Sean Tucker, the team's breakout star on offense last year, leads a deep group of backs that includes two players who sat out the 2020 season amid the coronavirus pandemic. Babers, during an in-house interview last month for donors and season-ticket holders, said Tucker is coming off "an amazing year" and is "very, very good." "We expect big things out of him," Babers said. - The Post-Standard

  06/29/21 - Andre SzmytrSr/2023, Syracuse, 6-1, 200 (DS#4 K) + More +

It's going to be a rough summer for Syracuse football in the preseason prognostication space. The team is coming off a one-win season. The magazines and national experts have Syracuse near or at the bottom of the ACC - again - with few players earning preseason recognition. Phil Steele's preseason all-ACC team features six Syracuse players, headlined by kicker Andre Szmyt, a first-team pick on special teams. That's the same number of selections SU had going into the 2018 season, when it won 10 games after being picked to finish last.

If Syracuse is going to repeat a similar turnaround this fall, it's going to come off the backs of players nobody thinks measures up to its conference brethren. Syracuse coach Dino Babers thinks the season hinges on the play of his linemen who aren't getting any conference recognition. The sixth-year coach said retaining five senior linemen on the offensive and defensive lines was huge after the NCAA granted unusual eligibility relief amid the coronavirus pandemic. "It's the key to the season to give us a chance," Babers said last month during an in-house interview for donors. "We needed the big guys to stay around." - The Post-Standard

  05/15/21 - *Trill WilliamsJr/2021, Syracuse, 6-0, 208 (DS#18 CB) + More +

The New Orleans Saints cut former Syracuse defensive back Trill Williams on Friday, indicating that the standout had failed his physical with the team. The team said that both Williams and Wisconsin defensive back Eric Burrell had failed their physicals and opted to bring in Louisiana-Lafayette DB Deuce Wallace instead. Williams was expected by many to be Syracuse's third player taken during the NFL Draft a few weeks ago but instead he went undrafted, signing a free agent contract with New Orleans. Williams played two-plus seasons with Syracuse and was known for his play-making, including a game-ending overtime play against Wake Forest in the final game of his sophomore season, when he tore the ball away from a Wake Forest receiver and returned the fumble for a sudden-death touchdown. - The Post-Standard

  05/03/21 - *Andre CiscoJr/2021, Syracuse, 6-0, 216 (DS#4 FS) + More +

If someone would've told Andre Cisco during his final two years of high school football at IMG Academy in Florida that he would be returning to the Sunshine State four years later as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, he wouldn't have believed them. "He would've said when, where and how? Because it was definitely a long road for me," said Cisco, who became the 65th pick in the 2021 NFL Draft on Friday night. "It wasn't clear. It was hard to say how it was going to happen, but I'll say going to IMG is what opened up my eyes to me believing in myself and making that next step to say I'm dedicated."

Cisco, a 6-foot-1, 216-pound safety, became the highest-drafted player for the Syracuse football program since 2013 on Friday night. He was in Atlanta surrounded by a group of family and friends when he got the life-changing call. "It means everything. This is exactly what I've been working for," Cisco said during a press conference shortly after he was selected. "I'm somebody that had an unfortunate incident this past season and was still fortunate enough to get drafted this early, so I'm blessed in a lot of different ways." - The Post-Standard

Williams, a 6-foot, 208-pound safety, signed a contract with the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted free agent. Williams finished his career at Syracuse with 93 tackles, four interceptions and three forced fumbles. He announced his decision to declare for the draft and forgo the final four games of the season in November. - The Post-Standard

Jason Simmons Jr., a former defensive back at New Mexico State, will transfer to Syracuse University. The 6-foot sophomore announced that his commitment to play for the Orange's football program Saturday night on Twitter. Simmons did not play in 2020 because New Mexico State - an independent program in the Football Bowl Subdivision - postponed its season due to the coronavirus pandemic. As a freshman, he played in 11 games and made eight starts, totaling 62 total tackles. Simmons is the second player to transfer to Syracuse during the offseason, joining former Mississippi State quarterback Garrett Shrader. - The Post-Standard

  02/24/21 - Kevin LemieuxSo/2024, Syracuse, 6-3, 252 (DS#999 DE) + More +

A Syracuse football defensive lineman is seeking a transfer after spending less than a year with the program. Kevin Lemieux, a 6-foot-4, 252-pound defensive lineman from Ashburnham, Massachusetts, has put his name in the NCAA transfer portal, which enables other schools to recruit him. Lemieux's decision to explore his options is unusual in that it comes less than a year after he arrived on campus. The Orange players returned to campus two weeks ago for the start of their winter strength program. Spring practice, when players jockey for position on the depth chart, has yet to start up. Lemieux, who turns 20 next month, did not play as a freshman last fall and has four seasons of eligibility remaining. He was the first player to commit to SU's 2020 recruiting class. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse defensive lineman McKinley Williams will return for a sixth season, becoming the third senior defensive lineman to return to the team. Williams' roster status was confirmed by athletic director John Wildhack during an interview on ESPN Radio 97.7 on Monday afternoon. The athletic director included Williams' name when listing off key seniors returning to the football team. Williams was one of the few remaining seniors whose roster status was unclear since the end of the season. Fall athletes were given exceptional latitude by the NCAA to extend their eligibility clocks in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In 50 games (26 starts) over five seasons, Williams has 99 tackles, including 18 for loss, 2.5 sacks and one fumble recovery. - The Post-Standard

  01/13/21 - Josh BlackrSr/2022, Syracuse, 6-3, 284 (DS#86 DT) + More +

Josh Black had three factors in mind when he decided to return for a sixth and final season with Syracuse next fall. The defensive lineman was undecided on his future plans toward the end of last season. He didn't think he was ready to take his NFL shot. He didn't want to regret passing on another year of free education. Those two factors tilted the scales: "It was no-brainer for me." The third was getting a redo after a 1-10 season, a chance to end his college career on a better note. Black recently expanded on his reasoning for returning to Syracuse on a podcast with his hometown paper in Illinois. "Ending on that 1-10 note just didn't sit right with me," Black said on "Not Just a Game," a weekly sports podcast from The Rockford Register Star. "I really need to end on a winning note to kind of complete my career here at Syracuse. "I feel like it's my duty to help them out." - The Post-Standard
