  Stephen F. Austin received all four possible first place votes in the preseason coaches poll and are the favorites to win the 2022 Western Athletic Conference regular season title. Lumberjacks wide receiver Xavier Gipson is the WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and kicker Chris Campos is the WAC Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year. In addition to being on the Preseason All-WAC team as a wide receiver, Gipson is also picked as a returner. The league's six head coaches, selected the teams and could not vote for their own team or players. SFA leads the way with 14 preseason honorees.

Gipson, running back Miles Reed, offensive lineman Clint Lapic, defensive lineman B.J. Thompson, linebacker Brevin Randle and defensive back Jeremiah Walker were all unanimous selections. Defending conference champion Sam Houston placed eight players on the preseason team. Bearkats defensive lineman Markel Perry is the WAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. SHSU is not eligible for this year's WAC title as they are transitioning to the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The WAC is part of the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). - WAC Football

  Brian Maurer is headed to Texas to continue his college football career. The former Tennessee football quarterback signed with Stephen F. Austin, an FCS school. Stephen F. Austin announced Maurer's edition on Wednesday during the early signing period. At Tennessee, Maurer played in 12 games with four starts, all in 2019. He was 37-of-81 passing for 550 yards and two touchdowns in two seasons.

Maurer entered the transfer portal during the preseason in August. He was absent from a week's worth of practices before announcing he was entering the portal. "I would like to thank both staffs for the opportunity to compete at the highest of levels there is in college football," Maurer wrote on Twitter when he announced his departure. Maurer vanished from Tennessee practices as of Aug. 11. The redshirt sophomore was competing with Harrison Bailey, Virginia Tech graduate transfer Hendon Hooker and Michigan transfer Joe Milton for UT's starting quarterback spot during the preseason. Milton won the job. Hooker claimed it after two games. Maurer appeared to be fourth string in Tennessee's four-man quarterback competition. - Knoxville News Sentinel

  Trae Self ran for three touchdowns and threw for two more as Stephen F. Austin steamrolled Lamar 42-6 in the regular season finale Saturday. The Lumberjacks, who hope for an at-large berth into the playoffs, came into the game ranked No. 22 in the FCS coaches Poll and won their fifth straight game. Self squeezed over from the 1 twice in the first quarter to put SFA up 14-0. After Bailey Giffen got the Cardinals on the board with a 32-yard field goal, Self threw a nine-yard strike to Jeremiah Miller and a 7-yard strike to Lawton Rikel. Giffen connected on a 53-yard field goal with :21 left in the first half to make it 28-6 at intermission, but Self scored his third rushing touchdown of the game on a five-yard run less than two minutes into the second half. Self was 15 of 23 for 262 yards and was picked off once for SFA (8-3, 4-2 ASUN-WAC). Lamar (1-9, 0-6) used three quarterbacks who were a collective 8 of 21 for 117 yards.   Trae Self threw three touchdown passes to Xavier Gipson and Stephen F. Austin scored the final 17 points to beat Central Arkansas 27-14 on Saturday. Self finished 18-of-31 passing for 268 yards with an interception, Gipson had six receptions for 99 yards and Miles Reed added 131 yards rushing on 32 carries for Stephen F. Austin (7-3, 3-2 ASUN/SWAC Challenge). Darius Hale scored on a 10-yard run to give Central Arkansas (5-5, 3-3) a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter. The teams exchanged punts before the Lumberjacks used a seven-play, 73-yard drive capped by a 6-yard TD pass from Self to Gipson to take a three-point lead just before halftime. Stephen F. Austin went 75 yards on the opening drive of the second half and Gipson's 7-yard TD reception made it 24-14 with 11:12 left in the third quarter. Hale had 88 yards rushing on 18 carries for Central Arkansas. Breylin Smith 17-of-27 passing for 163 yards with a touchdown and an interception before being helped off the field late in the game and replaced by Darius Bowers. - AP College Football

  Trae Self threw three touchdown passes to Xavier Gipson and Miles Reed ran for 132 yards and a score as Stephen F. Austin won its third straight game and handed Eastern Kentucky its first conference loss, 31-17 on Saturday. Self hit Gipson from 34 yards out in the first quarter and found him again for an 87-yard bomb to spark the Lumberjacks to a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter and their six-yard connection in the third quarter gave them a 24-10 advantage. Parker McKinney was 30 of 50 for 273 yards and a touchdown to lead Eastern Kentucky (6-3, 3-1 WAC-ASUN), but was picked off twice. He carried 11 times for 100 yards. Self was 16 of 25 for 323 yards and an interception for SFA (6-3, 2-2). Gipson had four catches for 138 yards and Lawton Rikel added three for another 65 yards. - AP College Football

  Trae Self threw for 346 yards and a career-high five touchdowns to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 41-27 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday. Self was 32 of 39 and spread his completions among 11 different receivers. Xavier Gipson had eight receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns and Darryle Simmons caught five passes, two for touchdowns. Larry Jones III had the other receiving touchdown and rushed for 108 yards on 11 carries. Self had a pair of touchdown passes as the Lumberjacks (5-3, 1-2 ASun-WAC) scored on their first four possessions to lead 20-6 at the half.   Trae Self threw three touchdown passes and Stephen F. Austin rolled to an 37-20 victory over winless Dixie State on Saturday night. Self completed 20 of 30 passes for 326 yards and connected with Xavier Gipson for two touchdowns and Chad Aune for one. Gipson finished with eight receptions for 208 yards. Self's 60-yard TD pass to Gipson stretched the Lumberjacks' lead to 27-10 midway through the third quarter. Miles Reed added 103 yards rushing on 19 carries and a 1-yard touchdown run for Stephen F. Austin (4-3, 1-2 ASUN-Western Athletic Conference). Drew Kannely-Robles carried the ball 24 times for 183 yards that included a 47-yard touchdown for Dixie State (0-7, 0-1).   Tre' Henderson ran for two touchdowns and Tkai Lloyd pounced on a blocked punt for a touchdown as Stephen F. Austin jumped out to a 38-0 lead in the first half and coasted to a 61-13 win over Division II Lincoln University on Saturday Night. The Oaklanders are playing their inaugural season of college football. Bruce Harmon blocked an Oswaldo Ochoa punt on fourth-and-12 at the Lincoln 23 and Lloyd fell on the loose ball in the end zone for the touchdown to give the Lumberjacks a 24-0 lead in the first quarter.

Henderson, who scored from the 1 in the first quarter, added a six-yard touchdown run in the second quarter for the 38-0 lead. Camero Burston threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Faizon Knight as time expired in the first half to get the Oaklanders (1-2) on the scoreboard, one of just three completions Lincoln managed in 17 attempts. Lincoln ran the ball 45 times for 82 net yards. Trae Self completed 12 of 15 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown and was picked off once for Stephen F.   Trae Self threw for two touchdowns and Stephen F. Austin's defense produced two touchdowns and the Lumberjacks dismantled Mississippi Valley State 58-13 on Saturday. After forcing the Delta Devils to three-and-out on the opening drive, Self threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Gipson to end a five-play, 66-yard drive. Gipson finished with 131 yards receiving on three receptions and with two scores.

On Mississippi State's following drive, Jeremiah Walker intercepted Conor Regan on third-and-nine and returned it 40 yards for a score and a 14-0 lead. The Delta Devils followed up that miscue with another when Amad Murray forced a fumble on Dederrian Williams which was recovered by Stephen F. Austin's (2-1) Chance Hill. Chris Campos then made a 46-yard field goal for the Lumberjacks. Myles Brooks later picked off Regan and returned it 14 yards for a 24-3 advantage en route to a 38-13 halftime lead.   Trae Self passed for 235 yards with a touchdown, Miles Reed rushed for 71 yards and a score, Chris Campos kicked two field goals and Stephen F. Austin rallied to defeat Tarleton State 20-10 on Saturday night in a season opener for both teams. The Lumberjacks fell into a 10-0 hole but then scored 20 unanswered points over the final 37 minutes. Self found Xavier Gipson for a 35-yard score to make it 10-7 with 6:44 left in the first half. Campos knotted the game at 10-10 with a 22-yard field goal late in the third, added a 43-yarder in the fourth, and Reed scored from the 2.

Tarleton's Steven Duncan was 21-for-33 passing for 242 yards and a TD, but was picked off three times. Duncan put the Texans on the board early, turning a Stephen F. Austin fumble into a two-play scoring drive that lasted just 10 seconds. He capped it with a 35-yard strike to J.F. Thomas. Tarleton's Adrian Guzman added a 36-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead just 10 seconds into the second quarter. From there, the Lumberjacks gained the momentum starting with a Myles Brooks interception of Duncan, leading to Gipson's touchdown catch on the other end. Stephen F.   Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer, who apparently had dropped to fourth string, was not at practice Wednesday. Maurer has not entered the NCAA transfer portal. However, that database usually takes more than one day to update once a player starts the process. Maurer has not appeared injured in previous practices, and classes have not yet begun for the fall semester. The Vols will hold a intrasquad scrimmage, which will be closed to media, on Thursday. Until then, coach Josh Heupel will not be available for comment.

Last week, Maurer explained why he stayed at Tennessee rather than enter the transfer portal like quarterbacks Jarrett Guarantano and J.T. Shrout did after last season. "My family raised a fighter," Maurer said. "I am going to keep swinging until the day I can't swing no more. I am going to give everything I can to this university." All Tennessee quarterbacks are at practice -- except Brian Maurer. Maurer's potential departure - or, at least, absence - slightly simplifies a quarterback battle that had already pushed him out of contention.   Jaquarion Turner had a career-best 208 yards rushing, Trae Self accounted for two touchdowns and Stephen F. Austin beat Eastern Kentucky 24-6 on Saturday. Stephen F. Austin (5-3) has a five-game winning streak, its first since 2011. Self ran for a 7-yard touchdown and threw a 30-yard TD pass to Xavier Gipson in the first quarter. Zach Nwachukwu's 22-yard punt return for a touchdown stretched the Lumberjacks' lead to 21-6 late in the third quarter. Turner, a redshirt freshman, had 21 carries, including a 39-yard run to help set up Chris Campos' 24-yard field goal. Self completed 12 of 18 passes for 124 yards. Gipson finished with six catches for 74 yards and 22 yards rushing. Dakota Allen was 14-of-36 passing for 158 yards and threw two interceptions for Eastern Kentucky (2-5).   Tre'Jon Henderson and Jaquarion Turner each ran for two touchdowns and Stephen F. Austin beat overmatched NCAA Division II-member Western Colorado 64-7 on Saturday. Stephen F. Austin (4-3) of the Southland Conference scored five touchdowns and a field goal in the first quarter and led 37-0. Following an early punt, the Mountaineers from Gunnison, Colorado fumbled the ball away on three straight drives and threw an interception, all of which led to Stephen F. Austin scores. The Lumberjacks had four different players complete passes, and between Trae Self, Preston Weeks, Blake Short, and Josh Foskey, the group combined were 31-for-39 passing for 404 yards. Remi Simmons caught four passes for 143 yards and a touchdown and 12-different Lumberjacks players had a reception. Luke Nethercot threw a 15-yard scoring pass to Damian Macias to allow the Mountaineers to avoid the shutout. Nethercot completed 6 of 8 in relief of Connor Desch. - AP College Football
