Trae Self threw three touchdown passes, including an 11-yard scoring strike to Moe Wedman with 2:22 remaining, to push Stephen F. Austin past Alcorn State 31-27 in a season opener on Saturday night. Self was 18-of-30 passing for 226 yards. Jerrell Wimbley added 91 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Lumberjacks. Jarveon Howard had 195 yards rushing on 21 carries for Alcorn State in its season opener. His 73-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter stretched the Braves' lead to 24-10 at halftime.

Jerrell Wimbley's 20-yard touchdown run for the Lumberjacks tied the game 24-24 with 3:48 left in the third. Following Self's game-winning TD pass, Alcorn State's drive stalled at its 43 when Myles Heard picked off an Aaron Allen pass. Alcorn State forced a three-and-out, but Max Quick's 47-yard punt pinned the Braves at their 5 with 39 seconds remaining and no timeouts. It was just the fourth match-up between the teams and the first since 2003. - Stephen F. Austin/AP College Football

OSU head coach Mike Gundy says that by the end of the week he'll know more about the wrist injury that has kept receiver/tight end Blaine Green out of practice for several days. Green suffered the injury about 10 days into preseason camp and Gundy said late last week that he was unsure of the timetable of the sophomore's absence. Among returning pass-catchers, Green had the second-most yards last season with 314 and a touchdown on 21 catches. He started the year as an inside receiver, but moved into more of a hybrid role with some tight end responsibilities. This year, Green is expected to be more regularly used as a tight end, so an extended absence could hurt the depth at that position, where only returning starter Braden Cassity has any significant experience. - Daily Oklahoman

The Cardinals have lost a four-star class of 2022 signee, Louisville football head coach Scott Satterfield said during an appearance on 93.9 The Ville. Wide receiver Devaughn Mortimer will not take the field for the Cardinals this season, the coach said Friday morning on the radio show. "It's out of our hands a little bit," the fourth-year head coach continued. "(Mortimer's) going to move on, probably to a different school. We hadn't heard where he's going to go, but wish him nothing but the best." Satterfield first addressed Mortimer's absence on Aug. 2, saying the Florida native's status with the team was still unclear and the Cardinals "should get maybe some clarity over the next couple of weeks." According to documents obtained by The Courier Journal, Mortimer had been arrested earlier this year on a third-degree felony battery charge on Feb. 9 in his Fort Lauderdale, his hometown. - Courier Journal
