Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer, who apparently had dropped to fourth string, was not at practice Wednesday. Maurer has not entered the NCAA transfer portal. However, that database usually takes more than one day to update once a player starts the process. Maurer has not appeared injured in previous practices, and classes have not yet begun for the fall semester. The Vols will hold a intrasquad scrimmage, which will be closed to media, on Thursday. Until then, coach Josh Heupel will not be available for comment.

Last week, Maurer explained why he stayed at Tennessee rather than enter the transfer portal like quarterbacks Jarrett Guarantano and J.T. Shrout did after last season. "My family raised a fighter," Maurer said. "I am going to keep swinging until the day I can't swing no more. I am going to give everything I can to this university." All Tennessee quarterbacks are at practice -- except Brian Maurer. Maurer's potential departure - or, at least, absence - slightly simplifies a quarterback battle that had already pushed him out of contention. He appeared to be No. 4 in the rotation from practice sessions open to media. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, running back Miles Reed, defensive back Eugene Ford and safety Khoury Bethley have been named the team captains for the University of Hawaii football team for the 2020 season. Out of the four captains, Ford is the lone senior of the group. "Just being here over the past year, understanding how the system works and the guys around me, they're like brothers now," Ford said in a Tuesday morning media call. "Coming in, you never know what to expect so just over the years, just growing with some of the guys that have been here, the opportunity is great. Just taking on that role, the way I attack my day is much different as opposed to being an asset to the team, now I have to lead. I have to lead by example or it's vocal or my actions." Reed is a redshirt junior, Bethley is a true juniors and Cordeiro is a redshirt sophomore. Cordeiro enters the 2020 season as the team's unquestioned starting quarterback. New head coach Todd Graham has also called Cordeiro the leader of the team. - khon2.com

University of Tennessee quarterback Brian Maurer shared his battles with anxiety and depression on his Instagram account Friday, which coincided with the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month. Maurer, who played in eight games and made four starts for the Volunteers as a freshman in 2019, even detailed his intention to commit suicide earlier this year. "On Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2020, I planned to take my own life," Maurer posted. "I thought I had lost my battle with depression and that my pain had come to an end. As I was going to do it, I said, 'God, if this isn't your plan for me, please send me a sign.' "Two minutes later, my mom called me with my baby nephew, Jeremiah, and said she was just calling to say she loved me. I then knew that by ending my pain, I would be causing so much more to the people who loved me." Maurer urged those in a similar situation to "reach out to receive help." The 6-foot-3, 195-pounder from Ocala, Florida, said he has battled anxiety and depression since middle school. - Chattanooga Times Free Press
