Stanford players danced, hooted and hollered on California's home turf in Memorial Stadium. The Cardinal came together and posed for a group photo in front of card stunts in the bleachers above featuring a message "Our axe" that came from the opposing side. They cradled the actual axe trophy that was now theirs again. Austin Jones ran for a pair of short touchdowns, Mills threw for 205 yards and a TD, and Stanford blocked a would-be tying extra point in the final minute to take back The Axe by beating Bay Area rival Cal 24-23 in the Big Game on Friday. Stanford quarterback Davis Mills was unavailable Saturday at No. 12 Oregon because of coronavirus testing results and contract tracing procedures. The Cardinal also said defensive end Trey LaBounty and wide receiver Connor Wedington were unavailable. The university did not specify whether the players tested positive for COVID-19 and offered no other details. But Wedington said on Twitter: "I got contact traced, I tested negative for COVID." Mills started six games last season, throwing for 1,960 yards and 11 touchdowns. He set a school record with 504 passing yards against the Cougars. Stanford will likely be without its leading returning linebacker and cornerback against Oregon. Cardinal coach David Shaw said "unless something drastically changes" Gabe Reid and Kyu Kelly are unlikely to play against the No. 12 Ducks on Saturday (4:30 p.m., ABC). Those are two critical personnel blows to the Cardinal, who lost a series of players to transfers in the offseason and saw left tackle Walker Little and top cornerback Paulson Adebo opt out of the season. Reid, who had 43 tackles with nine for loss including two sacks last season, is Stanford's leading returning edge rusher and its most disruptive defender. Shaw said Reid will likely be replaced by Thunder Keck, a former walk-on who had three tackles last season. "Thunder Keck will get his first start, just got on scholarship this past week," Shaw said. "Had an outstanding camp, has been a really good special teams player for us. We will also play multiple outside linebackers in our base and nickel packages." - The Oregonian

Mills threw for 1,960 yards with 11 touchdowns and five interceptions last season. He opened with wins over Oregon State and Washington but ended the year with losses to Washington State, Cal and Notre Dame. He's got arm talent but some of Mills' situational splits from last season are concerning, particularly on third downs. If Stanford is going to continue to lean on possession and running on offense, that's problematic for an older quarterback. - The Oregonian

Is redshirt junior Davis Mills the next great Stanford quarterback? The top-ranked quarterback in his class by Scout and Rivals, and the top-ranked pro-style quarterback by 247Sports, Mills already holds the school record for passing yards in a game. He threw for 504 yards last year against Washington State, completing 33 of 50 passes and breaking the 22-year-old mark of 450 yards set by Todd Husak. That game against the Cougars was one of six starts Mills made in place of injured K.J. Costello, who transferred to Mississippi State in the offseason. Stanford went 2-4 in those starts as Mills completed 65.6 percent of his passes for 1,960 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. Shaw described his form at the end of last season as "outstanding." "His play against Cal, his play against Notre Dame, I thought was borderline special," Shaw said. "We could put a lot on him and it's not too much for him. He can handle it all - protections, run game - very, very well. Stanford senior cornerback Paulson Adebo will opt out of the 2020 season to begin preparing for the 2021 NFL draft, he announced Thursday via social media. Over his final two seasons, Adebo played in 22 games with 21 starts. He had a nation-leading 38 passes defended and eight interceptions during that span and was named All-Pac-12 first team in each of those two seasons. In 2018, Adebo was named FWAA second team All-American after leading the nation, and setting a school record, with 24 passes defended. In 2019, he finished with 33 tackles, 10 pass breakups and four interceptions. - The Mercury News

Senior left tackle Walker Little announced that he will forego any potential spring football season to prepare for the 2021 NFL draft, becoming the first Stanford football player to opt out. Less than a year ago, Little announced he would return for his senior season and to complete his degree. Little plans to graduate after winter quarter with a degree in communication. In a letter titled “Thank You, Stanford” Little explained his decision. Little is a former five-star recruit who is seen as a potential first round NFL draft pick in 2021.
