Although action doesn't officially start until Monday, among the reported quarterbacks in, or planning to be to enter the transfer portal as of Dec. 1 are Tulsa's Braylon Braxton and Davis Brin: Tulsa fired coach Phillip Montgomery, and both quarterbacks who started a game for the Golden Hurricane are moving on. Brin started nine games this season, with Braxton – a redshirt freshman – starting the other three when Brin was injured. Brin, who also started in 2021, has had problems with interceptions, throwing 24 picks in two seasons (to 35 TD passes); he has one season of eligibility remaining. Braxton has intriguing upside and some dual-threat capabilities. - NFL Draft Scout and online sources

Tulsa fired coach Philip Montgomery, who spent eight seasons at the school and reached four bowl games, on Sunday. The Golden Hurricane finished their season 5-7 after beating Houston on the road Saturday. It was not enough to keep the school from making a change. Montgomery finished 43-53 in his first head coaching job. "I'm certainly disappointed that I won't have the opportunity to continue leading this program," Montgomery said in a statement. "For the past eight years, I've given the University of Tulsa, our players, and staff everything I have. I'm proud of the way we locked arms and battled through adversity at every turn." Montgomery was offensive coordinator at Baylor before taking over at Tulsa in 2015, but the Golden Hurricane's offense was up and down throughout Montgomery's tenure. Montgomery's best season came in Year 2, when Tulsa went 10-3. The Golden Hurricane also played in the American Athletic Conference championship game in 2020, losing to Cincinnati. - AP College Football

Braylon Braxton passed for 316 yards and three touchdowns - including two long ones to JuanCarlos Santana - and also ran for a score to help Tulsa upset Houston 37-30 on Saturday night. It was all Houston early, as the Cougars used a 68-yard punt return score by Nathaniel Dell and Clayton Tune's 27-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden to lead 14-3 after one quarter. Tulsa's Jack Long and Houston's Kyle Ramsey traded field goals before Braxton hit Keylon Stokes for a 1-yard score to get Tulsa (5-7, 3-5 American Athletic Conference) within 17-13 with 3:58 left before halftime. From there, Tune connected with Dell for a 13-yard touchdown, but Braxton answered with a 37-yard touchdown run and the Golden Hurricane trailed 24-20 at intermission.

Between Bourgeois's field goals, the Warhawks (4-8, 3-5) scored on a 23-yard pass from Chandler Rogers to Andrew Henry and a 37-yard field goal by Calum Sutherland.   Frank Gore Jr. and James Dean had fourth-quarter touchdown runs and Southern Mississippi rallied to beat Arkansas State 20-19 on Saturday night. Arkansas State used James Blackman's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Foreman and a safety to take a 19-7 lead after three quarters. Southern Miss (3-3, 1-1 Sun Belt Conference) pulled within five points on Gore's 30-yard scoring run to finish off a nine-play, 95-yard drive with 9:20 remaining in the game.

The Golden Eagles' defense forced a three-and-out and and Natrone Brooks' 30-yard punt return set Southern Miss up at the Red Wolves' 45-yard line. Zach Wilcke directed a 12-play drive with Dean giving the Golden Eagles the lead on a 3-yard run with 2:12 left to play. Arkansas State (2-5, 1-3) turned the ball over on downs after two false-start penalties and a sack by the Golden Eagles' Jalil Clemons left the Red Wolves in a fourth-and-27 hole.   Linebacker Daylen Gill has routinely impressed throughout the preseason, and flashed the most out of the 10 transfer additions during Tuesday's scrimmage. The headline play came in a short-yardage situation, when Gill exploded through the line of scrimmage to blow up a fullback dive. "I'm glad he's on our team," Hall said. The Ole Miss transfer showcased a tremendous engine, and earned additional praise from Hall for the physicality he showed while taking reps with the first-team defense. It should be noted, though, that Santrell Latham sat out the scrimmage with a slight injury, so it remains to be seen exactly how that room will shake out. "I think Daylen has had a really good camp," Armstrong said. "Daylen's very, very fluid in the hips. He can finish plays...He can be locked into a blocker and engage and play. "He's got thousands of fewer reps than these other guys, but he's doing a good job." - Clarion Ledger

Here is how LB Daylen Gill and his "desperate man mentality" will help Southern Miss football. Gill (5-11, 225) spent his first four preseason practices with the Golden Eagles flying around the field like a player who knows he's got one more shot at college football. Gill, a Jones College product and Ole Miss transfer, spent two seasons with the Rebels and played sparingly before making the move to Hattiesburg for his final collegiate season. "He's really had that last opportunity - almost like a desperate man mentality," USM defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong said. "He had an experience where it wasn't working out for him. He wasn't planning on being here. And, for whatever reason, his life turned him here." - Hattiesburg American
