Trey Lowe threw a 26-yard touchdown to Jason Brownlee on the second play of the fourth quarter to give the Golden Eagles the lead at 31-24, and Gore's 55-yarder capped the scoring with 2:57 left. Linebacker Daylen Gill had three of Southern Miss' season-high five sacks. Lowe threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jakarius Caston to give Southern Miss a 7-0 lead at the 12:20 mark of the first quarter. Gore's 64-yard run made it 14-0 early in the second.   2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Frank Gore, Jr. (So.), Southern Miss,...Yes, this is the son of the 16-year NFL veteran who retired June 2, 2022 as the league's No. 3 all-time rusher. But this is about jr., who is 5-8, 195 and led the Golden Eagles in rushing for the second-straight season in 2021, collecting 801 yards on 149 carries with a 4.5 per rush average to go along with five rushing scores. Late last season, Gore, Jr., was asked to increase his role in captaining the offense by helping the Golden Eagles run the wildcat offense, that many Southern Miss faithful dubbed the "Superback Offense" over the final three contests of the season. After almost leading the team to an upset of nationally ranked UTSA in San Antonio, Gore, Jr., helped Southern Miss win their final two games of the year. Over those final three games, Gore, Jr., also completed 10-fo-16 passes for 189 yards and four touchdowns. - Southern Miss Football

Southern Miss was one of the worst rushing teams in college football last year, averaging 117.5 yards per game. That ranked 121st out of 130 FBS squads. The Golden Eagles started off on an even worse pace Thursday night, rushing for just 95 yards on 37 carries. Freshman Frank Gore Jr. provided a little stability in his debut, leading the team with 32 yards on 12 attempts. But without a stable rushing attack Southern Miss' offense remains one-dimensional. - Clarion Ledger
