  SMU receiver Reggie Roberson Jr., who has averaged 100.4 yards receiving per game, is still dealing with a foot injury sustained Oct. 24 at Houston. Even without Roberson, the Mustangs had two 100-yard receivers in the same game for the first time this season at Memphis: AAC receptions leader James Proche (13 catches for 149 yards) and freshman Rashee Rice (seven catches for 122 yards).   SMU coach Sonny Dykes conceded that the Mustangs did not play well and still managed to escape with a win. Shane Buechele threw for 203 yards and two touchdowns, Xavier Jones ran for 133 yards and two touchdowns and No. 16 SMU held off Houston 34-31 Thursday night. "It was a struggle for most of the night," Dykes said. "We didn't do a good job running the ball in the second half, didn't really have the ball in the second half. We had a couple short fields and made strange things happen, but again, any time you cannot play well and win on the road, especially on a short week . I got to give our guys a lot of credit."

Buechele was 20 of 38. James Proche caught seven passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Kylen Grayson had six receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown for SMU (8-0, 4-0 American). SMU improved to 8-0 for the first time since starting 10-0 in 1982, and improved to 4-0 in conference play for the first time since 1986. "It wasn't our best performance really on either side of the ball," Dykes said. "We made some uncharacteristic mistakes. We haven't given up big plays like that on defense. We've executed at a much higher level offensively up to this point than we did tonight." Jones had a career-long 62-yard rushing touchdown with 10:41 left in the second quarter and added a 2-yard scoring run 47 seconds into the second half after SMU forced a Houston fumble and Richard McBryde recovered it. "We've been preaching all week `It might be ugly; it might be pretty, but we wanted to come down here and be 1-0'," Jones said. "We got the job done. It was an ugly game, but I'm proud of my team and how we fought." - AP College Football

  SMU's improbable season remains perfect thanks to an aerial game that eliminated some of the high anxiety last seen when the Mustangs took the field. Shane Buechele set career highs with six touchdown passes and 457 passing yards as No. 19 SMU improved to 7-0 with a 45-21 win over Temple on Saturday. Reggie Roberson Jr. had a career-high 250 receiving yards on eight catches, including touchdowns of 75, 60 and 33 yards. The 33-yard score saw Buechele lead Roberson into the left corner of the end zone in tight coverage. On the two longer connections, Roberson got behind the secondary in the middle of the field with room to spare.

"We thought coming into the game we had some favorable matchups with some of our skill guys, and we had to execute," SMU coach Sonny Dykes said. "Shane obviously made some really great deep throws, and Reggie made some plays." "Our team does a really good job at taking it week by week and going 1-0," Buechele said. "It's always a goal to win, but to win that week -- not just the whole season." The Mustangs have opened the season with seven straight wins for the first time since 1982, when they were 10-0-0 en route to an 11-0-1 finish. The seven-game winning streak is their longest since winning eight straight during the 1984-85 seasons and matches their win total of the previous two years.   Shane Buechele threw a 25-yard touchdown to James Proche in the third overtime and No. 24 SMU beat Tulsa 43-37, coming back from a three-touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter Saturday night to win in its first game as a ranked team in 33 years. After Tulsa missed its second field goal in overtime, Proche made a leaping catch in the front corner of the end zone over a defender and got a foot down before going out of bounds. The play was initially ruled incomplete before being overturned on replay review. SMU (6-0, 2-0 American) this week moved into the AP poll for the first time since October 1986, before NCAA sanctions that included the death penalty. The Mustangs didn't field a team in 1987 and 1988.

Xavier Jones ran for 121 yards and scored two game-tying touchdowns for SMU before he fumbled in the second overtime. But Tulsa couldn't take advantage when Jacob Rainey's 43-yard field goal attempt was wide left. Tusla (2-3, 0-1) had the ball to start the third overtime, and went to a different kicker after failing to get a first down. But Zack Long was wide left on a 42-yard attempt. Jones had a 4-yard TD run on a fourth-down play with 1:02 left in regulation. His 3-yard score force the second overtime after Zach Smith's fourth touchdown pass, a 7-yarder to Josh Johnson, opened the overtime scoring. The former Texas starting quarterback and the linebacker who played for Auburn in the SEC championship game two seasons ago will now be part of SMU's first game as a ranked team in 33 years. The No. 24 Mustangs (5-0, 1-0 American) are home against Tulsa on Saturday night. “There's been some rough seasons around here through the years. There's also been some good ones,” second-year coach Sonny Dykes said. “Winning helps, but you've got to win consistently, and I think sometimes it may be a little slower process than people want it to be.” SMU quarterback Shane Buechele and leading tackler Richard McBryde were on Top 25 teams before joining the Mustangs this season.

The former Texas starting quarterback and the linebacker who played for Auburn in the SEC championship game two seasons ago will now be part of SMU's first game as a ranked team in 33 years.
