  Shane Buechele threw for two touchdowns and TJ McDaniel rushed for 159 yards and three scores as SMU sprinted to a 47-17 victory over Texas State on Saturday evening. The Mustangs started the season 3-0 for the first time since 1984. The Ponies opened this year with wins over Arkansas State, 37-30, and North Texas, 49-27. They will face TCU in Fort Worth next week. Buechele was 14-of-18 passing for 219 yards but also had two interceptions. McDaniel had just eight carries with his longest being 48 yards. Xavier Jones added 108 yards and one score on 20 carries.

The Mustangs took the opening kickoff and drove 74 yards for the score when Buechele hit James Proche from the 4. They added a field goal and another touchdown to go up 13-0 at the half. Jones and McDaniel had a TD apiece in the third to go ahead 27-3 before the Bobcats would cross the goal line. SMU amassed 639 yards while limiting the Bobcats to 241 total yards.   Shane Buechele threw three touchdowns, Xavier Jones ran for three scores and SMU was never threatened in its 49-27 home-opening win over North Texas on Saturday. The Mustangs (2-0) scored three touchdowns in the first quarter when Buechele threw a 5-yarder to Reggie Roberson Jr., Jones had a 24-yard run and Ke'Mon Freeman added a 2-yard touchdown run. Jones carried the ball 16 times and gained 127 yards and the Mustangs overall ran for 211 yards. James Proche had 115 yards receiving on seven receptions for a score, and Roberson had 94 yards receiving on six receptions and two touchdowns. Buechele was 21 of 31 for 292 yards and completed passes to eight different receivers. Tre Siggers led North Texas (1-1) with 164 yards rushing on 18 carries (9.1 average) and the Mean Green also amassed 211 yards on the ground.   Xavier Jones ran for three touchdowns as SMU held on late for a 37-30 win over Arkansas State on Saturday in a season opener. SMU led by seven when Arkansas State began its final drive with just over two minutes left. The Red Wolves were threatening when, with seven seconds remaining, the Mustang's Delontae Scott sacked ASU quarterback Logan Bonner, forcing a fumble which was recovered by teammate Nelson Paul, sealing the win for SMU.

SMU trailed early but took a 16-9 edge at halftime with the help of field goals by Kevin Robledo of 29 and 25 yards. Bonner opened the second half with a pair of touchdowns to Omar Bayless to give the Red Wolves a 23-16 lead with 7:36 to go in the third. C.J. Sanders answered for the Mustangs with a 98-yard punt return for a score and Jones ran for a touchdown, lifting SMU to a 30-23 lead at the end of the third. Jones ran for another TD midway through the fourth to stretch it to 37-23. Shane Buechele threw for 360 yards for the Mustangs. Ke'Mon Freeman ran for 86 yards and Jones finished with 56 yards.   A departing Alabama player has decided on a transfer destination. Former Crimson Tide tight end Kedrick James is transferring to SMU, he told AL.com. SMU is less than two hours away from home for James, a Waco, Texas native. A former four-star recruit, James was part of Alabama's 2017 recruiting class. The 6-foot-5, 260-pound James had a 29-yard touchdown catch-and-run during the Tide's spring game in April. He went into the NCAA transfer portal July 12. - AL.com
