Buechele completed 24 of 33 passes for 344 yards with no interceptions and added a 2-yard touchdown run. The senior moved into fourth on SMU's career list with seven 300-yard passing games and into fifth at the school with 39 career TD passes. North Texas went three-and-out on the game's opening possession and then on SMU's first play from scrimmage Buechele hit Rashee Rice for a 50-yard gain. Three plays later Reggie Roberson Jr.'s 15-yard touchdown catch made it 7-0 with 12:33 less than 2 1/2 minutes into the game.

The 2020 college football season is throwing everything a little out of whack. The reality, though, is that the season is going to have a significant impact on what happens in the years to come. The NCAA granted what is basically a free year of eligibility to all fall sports athletes. That means every football player will technically be allowed to add on a year. For all intents and purposes, 2020 doesn't count. "I think there's been some players that have already told us that they intend to come back," said coach Sonny Dykes. "Then there's some that I think just want to see how the year goes...I think there's just so much football that needs to be played and there's so many things that can play out." So that brings SMU to players like Richard Moore and Richard McBryde. Both are sixth-year linebackers. Theoretically, both will will be contributors, but neither appear surefire NFL locks. So, that presents an interesting scenario. - Dallas Morning News

Pooka Williams is the undisputed star of the Kansas football offense. If you ask some of the Jayhawks, though, the preseason All-Big 12 running back has more than just a backup or sidekick in Velton Gardner. Even though Gardner is entering his sophomore season having not yet carried the ball more than five times in a KU game, at least one of his teammates views Gardner as the co-star in Williams' magic show. Senior receiver Andrew Parchment considers the KU duo one of the best running back combinations in the country. "That's 1A and 1B," Parchment proclaimed earlier this week. A bit of an afterthought in KU's offensive game plan many weeks in 2019, Gardner was expected to be the team's third-string back as a true freshman.

But once Khalil Herbert decided to redshirt and ultimately left the program, Gardner, a three-star Dallas athlete in KU's 2019 recruiting class, got a jumpstart on his college career. All of Gardner's carries came in the final eight games of the season, as he finished with 26 rushing attempts, 138 yards, 5.3 yards per carry and two touchdowns. "Velton takes a lot from Pooka, but Pooka takes a lot from Velton, as well," Parchment said. "They're a very good mix and match together, because I don't feel like we lose anything when Velton's in the game and I don't feel like we lose anything when Pooka's in the game. And it gets very scary when both of them are in the game." - Lawrence Journal World

Roberson Jr. was arguably the best WR the team had through the first seven games of last season. In his final full game, he had eight catches for 250 yards and three touchdowns against Temple. He had 803 receiving yards in seven-plus games. Roberson Jr. probably could have been in the NFL right now if he had chosen to do so. Instead, he'll come back for another year with the Mustangs and his foot injury healed. - Dallas Morning News

Last season was a weird one for McBryde, who joined the team toward the end of training camp. Then, in the fourth game of the season, he was moved into a starter's role when Richard Moore went out with a season-ending injury. He ended up leading the team with 98 tackles, anchoring the defense in the middle of the field. The Auburn transfer got a sixth year of eligibility, and could theoretically come back for a seventh next season. - Dallas Morning News

Shane Buechele threw for 367 yards and a touchdown and SMU held on despite two second-half turnovers to win its first game at Texas State, 31-24 on Saturday in the season opener for both teams. Buechele threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Reggie Roberson Jr. in the third quarter that gave the Mustangs the lead for good, 24-21 late in the third quarter. TJ McDaniel ran for 130 yards and a 9-yard touchdown early in the third quarter for the Mustangs. Ulysses Bentley IV had two touchdown runs from 6 and 12 yards in the second quarter and finished with 49 yards rushing. Roberson finished with six catches for 99 yards. Rashee Rice added five catches for 101 yards for the Mustangs.

Brady McBride was 21-of-39 passing for 227 yards and two touchdowns in his first start at Texas State. McBride tossed a 3-yard TD pass Jeremiah Haydel, who made a spectacular one-handed diving catch in the corner of the end zone in the second quarter. The Bobcats played without tight ends due to quarantine restrictions and had offensive linemen fill the position. Calvin Hill ran for 100 yards and Brock Sturges added 95 yards rushing and a 4-yard touchdown run for Texas State. - SMU/AP College Football

Gray flipped to SMU from TCU on the early signing day in December, and he appears to be shaping up to be the go-to guy on a roster looking for someone to fill the shoes of James Proche. "The guy that's kind of been the most solid player this entire fall camp has been Danny Gray," Dykes said. Danny's going to have a great year, he's just a really uniquely talented football player, works incredibly hard. "[He's] probably the fastest college football player I've ever seen." Gray is a transfer from Blinn College, and he attended Madison High School in Dallas. There's plenty of good wide receivers returning in Reggie Roberson Jr., Rashee Rice, Keke Burns, Austin Upshaw and Calvin Wiggins. - Dallas Morning News

When Justin Osborne left Auburn and entered the transfer portal in early August, it was because he wanted to be closer to home. With the threat of COVID-19, and his father raising Justin's 16-year-old sister on his own, he didn't like the idea of being a 10.5-hour car ride away from Dallas. What the new SMU offensive lineman didn't know when he made the decision to transfer was just how seriously COVID-19 would impact his family, just days after returning home.

His father, Bob Osborne, a truck driver, contracted the disease. Justin would take care of his father - them both wearing masks. But it got to the point where Bob's breathing was so heavily impacted that he was hospitalized about 10 days ago. "I was praying and hoping that he could pull through it and get better soon," Justin said. "...Me and him have a real close relationship, and I'm always going to be there for him just like he's always going to be there for me. "If he needed something, I'm right there with it." - Dallas Morning News
