OCT 25 BIG 12 CO-NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Charles Woods, West Virginia, DB, Jr.,...Woods recorded his first interception as a Mountaineer at the 13:58 mark in the fourth quarter and returned it 32 yards to set up WVU on the TCU 15-yard line. Three plays later, Leddie Brown scored his third touchdown of the game to give WVU a 12-point lead which was the final margin. Two drives later, Sean Mahone forced a fumble and Woods recovered it with 5:15 left in the game. He also recorded five tackles, including a tackle for loss at the end of the second quarter on a first-and-goal play. Woods then made the touchdown-saving tackle on the 2-yard line on third down, forcing the Horned Frogs to settle for a field goal before the half. - Big 12 Football

Tyler Van Dyke backed up his words. And Miami took a big step toward potentially salvaging its season. Van Dyke passed for 325 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to Charleston Rambo, to lead the Hurricanes past No. 18 N.C. State 31-30 on Saturday night - snapping what was a six-game losing streak against Power 5 opponents. The freshman, who started this season backing up the now-injured D'Eriq King, said earlier in the week that he didn't think N.C. State could stop Miami's offense. And after completing 25 of 33 passes, he proved himself right. "How about Tyler Van Dyke? I mean, it's unbelievable," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "Third conference game. And that defense is a hell of a defense. I mean, no one moves the ball on them." Correction: No one had.

Jaylan Knighton had 166 total yards - 83 rushing, 83 more receiving - and a touchdown catch for Miami (3-4, 1-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Rambo finished with nine catches for 127 yards and Will Mallory had a touchdown grab for the Hurricanes. Devin Leary threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for another for N.C. State. Thayer Thomas had both touchdown receptions for the Wolfpack (5-2, 2-1). "Obviously, we're very emotional, disappointed," N.C. State coach Dave Doeren said. "Gotta give Miami credit. We didn't make the plays we needed to make that we've been making and we helped them at some key moments." Van Dyke's comments were noticed by the Wolfpack, and Diaz said there was a slew of pregame trash talk in response. Didn't matter. The kid didn't blink. "I love Tyler at quarterback," Rambo said. - Miami/AP College Football

SEPT 27 MISSOURI VALLEY NOTABLE PERFORMANCE: LB Shanon Reid, Illinois State - Locked in a defensive battle, junior Shanon Reid led Illinois State with 15 total tackles, nine of those solo, against No.7 Southern Illinois. Reid came up with a big pass breakup in the first quarter on 3rd and 8 to draw an offensive pass interference against the Salukis and force a punt. His interception at the end of the second quarter allowed the Redbirds to enter the locker room at half with a lead. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

D'Eriq King was watching from the sideline, and his backups put on a show. Tyler Van Dyke passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns in his first career start, and Miami tuned up for Atlantic Coast Conference play by racking up a school-record 739 yards of offense in an easy 69-0 win over Central Connecticut State on Saturday. Van Dyke - starting in place of King, out with a shoulder injury - became the first Miami quarterback since Brock Berlin in 2003 to throw a touchdown pass on the first possession of his first start. He finished 10-of-11 passing.

Van Dyke shared time with Jake Garcia, who completed 11 of 14 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns in his collegiate debut. "There is a good feeling in that locker room," Miami coach Manny Diaz said. "There's a good feeling not just because of the victory, not just because of the score, not because of the opponent. It's because of all the things that we emphasized this week in practice, the things we asked them to do, our energy on the sideline... we were excited to play today and that means we're on the right path." Miami (2-2) had eight players had either a scoring run or catch and the Hurricanes scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions. The 69 points was the fifth-most in school history, and the margin of victory was the third-largest behind only 77-0 and 77-7 wins over Savannah State in 2018 and 2013, respectively. - Miami/AP College Football

On paper, the wide receiver room undoubtedly will be a strength for SMU heading into the 2021 season. Reggie Roberson Jr., even after a season-ending knee injury, was recently named a Top 100 player in college football by ESPN. Senior Danny Gray is on the radar of NFL teams, and Rashee Rice has over 1,000 yards in two seasons at SMU, making him a prime candidate for a breakout junior season.

And then there's Arizona State transfer Jordan Kerley. "You go and look at fall camp and I'm not so sure he hasn't been our most consistent receiver," head coach Sonny Dykes recently said. Saturday was a good example. Kerley, a transfer and Austin native, had three touchdown receptions in team drills - both 7on7 and 11on11 - at SMU's open practice in Ford Stadium, including a touchdown reception from freshman Preston Stone that went for at least 50 yards. SMU's practices have been open to the media, and with each practice he's seemingly progressed to the point where he's now turning heads. "We have gotten a lot of chemistry over the past few weeks," Kerley said, "and I feel like our team is definitely cooking." - Dallas Morning News

SMU senior wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. couldn't help but offer a slight grin when the question came his way. Do you understand the plan … or do you want to let it loose a little bit more? The grin said the answer before his words did. "For me, I just want to get out there and get those reps because I've been away from the game for so long," said Roberson, who continues to wear a No. 21 red non-contact jersey during fall camp. "But at the same time I've got to understand to just trust the coaching staff and what they have going on with me. Just sit back, take those mental reps and get my body ready."

Easing Roberson into full-go this fall makes sense, considering the way the last two seasons ended for him. In 2019, Roberson had a foot injury that sidelined for him the last five games of the season. Last year, he suffered a season-ending knee injury on Oct. 3 that required surgery. Roberson, a Mesquite Horn alum and former West Virginia transfer, was one of a few SMU players that decided to take advantage of the extra year of eligibility created because of the pandemic. And with one year left on the Hilltop, availability might be his most important ability before he heads to the NFL draft. "Basically like a pitcher, we're putting him on a pitch count and just gradually building him up," said offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Garrett Riley. "But great mentality. Dude's a pro and he attacks it every day and I can't wait to see him out there." - Dallas Morning News

Since the first day of fall camp, Smith has gotten most of his work with the first-team unit as an outside receiver along with Oklahoma transfer Charleston Rambo and fifth-year senior slot starter Mike Harley. The No. 14 preseason Canes open the season Sept. 4 against defending champion Alabama at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but a depth chart won't be released until at least game week. "Key'Shawn is fast," UM offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee told WQAM last week. "He's explosive. God's gifted him a lot... Once the consistency comes together for him we think he has a chance to be a really good football player..."

Receivers coach Rob Likens, also interviewed last week on WQAM, said Smith is still learning "the different types of coverages that can come at you and fool you as a young wide receiver. You could get rolled up on really fast like in a Cover 2 cloud look when you don't expect it. We're just trying to work with him on his mind-set during pre-snap. "But as far as talent and his athletic ability to make big plays - his speed - yes, he definitely has that." - Miami Herald

Offensive tackle Zion Nelson and defensive tackle Nesta Silvera - two key pieces of UM's lines - haven't been spotted during practice media access this week, but there's apparently no cause for concern. Coach Manny Diaz said neither had surgery and both are on track to play in the Sept. 4 opener against Alabama. "Both guys are experiencing soreness from a previous situation," Diaz said. "Being held out, precautionary. Both guys have a lot of experience. I would expect when we start game prep next week, I would expect both to be back with us." Asked if everyone will be available for the Alabama game, Diaz said: "We'll have pretty much a full complement of our guys."

Nelson has not participated in at least the past four practices attended by media, going back to early last week. He was not at Tuesday's and Thursday's practices during the media's 40 minutes of viewing. Nelson, 6-5 and 316 pounds, started seven games last season at left tackle, including the last six of the season. He has been projected by various college football analysts as a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. - Miami Herald

KU football opened its preseason camp without a couple of notable names, as neither returning leading rusher Velton Gardner nor potential starting defensive end Steven Parker were in uniform for the first practice. Leipold said as of Thursday morning he didn't have any updates on the players who were out. "That just kind of came from the training room," the coach said of a list of nine Jayhawks who were unable to go on the first day of camp. "We'll see where that takes us and go from there." Joining junior running back Gardner and sophomore Parker on the list were redshirt freshman linebacker Alonso Person, sophomore receiver Torry Locklin, freshman receivers Majik Rector and Tanaka Scott, junior receiver Kevin Terry, redshirt freshman receiver Jordan Brown and redshirt freshman fullback Jared Casey. - Lawrence Journal World

Former Oregon linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia, who entered the transfer portal last month, announced Tuesday he is reuniting with Jim Leavitt at SMU. As a starter on the Ducks' back-to-back Pac-12 championship teams, Slade-Matautia had 62 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and 11 pass breakups in 2019 (14 games) and 45 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and five pass breakups in 2020 (seven games). Two five-star recruits from the 2020 class, Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe, are the favorites to win the starting inside linebacker spots for new Oregon defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter. Leavitt, Oregon's defensive coordinator under Willie Taggart (2017) and Cristobal (2018), is entering his first season as SMU's defensive coordinator under former California coach Sonny Dykes. He helped recruit Slade-Matautia, a four-star prospect in the 2017 class, from Honolulu to Eugene. - Register Guard

Oregon linebacker Isaac Slade-Matautia announced Friday that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal with the intention of playing his final collegiate season somewhere else. Slade-Matautia, the Ducks leading tackler last season and a starter the past two years, was a productive leader on the program's back-to-back Pac-12 championship teams. "These are milestones and memories I will cherish forever," Slade-Matautia posted on social media. "Nothing will ever replace those experiences, relationships, and memories I've had here." Oregon's recent success on the recruiting trail means Slade-Matautia will likely be replaced in the heart of new defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter's unit by a five-star recruit. Slade-Matautia had 3.5 tackles for loss and a sack last season. The fifth-year junior had 127 tackles, 12.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 28 career games for the Ducks. - Register Guard

Another University of Miami football starter is on the mend - and is doubtful for the Sept. 4 season opener against defending national champion Alabama. The Miami Herald learned Saturday through multiple sources that Hurricanes left guard Jakai Clark, who started 22 games on the offensive line the past two seasons, was in a car accident the night of the April 17 spring game. Clark started in the spring game. Clark, listed as 6-3 and 305 pounds, had surgery earlier this week to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder and was told he would be out three to four months. A UM source confirmed that Clark was recuperating from surgery after the car accident. Likely starting in his place would be 6-5, 325-pound second-year freshman Jalen Rivers out of Jacksonville Oakleaf High, who did very well during spring practice and was battling Clark for the starting job. - Miami Herald
