  Nic Baker threw for four touchdowns and Southern Illinois rallied from an early 20-point hole to beat host South Dakota State 42-41 in overtime in a matchup of FCS top-10 contenders on Saturday. No. 8-ranked Southern Illinois (5-1, 3-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference) maintained its place atop the conference standings with the stunning win over the third-ranked Jackrabbits (4-1, 1-1). Donovan Spencer's 10-yard touchdown run to start overtime put Illinois State up 42-35 for its first lead of the day. South Dakota State responded when Chris Oladokun threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Tucker Kraft. Opting to try for the win, Oladokun's 2-point conversion attempt failed to end it.

Baker's 19-yard pass to Landon Lenoir with 34 seconds left in regulation tied it at 35-all. The Jackrabbits built a 20-0 lead before Baker connected with Jerron Rollins on a 61-yard score and with Lenoir on an 18-yard touchdown to reduce the deficit to 20-14 before the break. Baker threw for 359 yards and Lenoir and Rollins had 147 and 104 yards in receiving respectively. Oladokun threw for 358 yards and Pierre Strong Jr. ran for 162 yards on 20 carries and scored twice. - AP College Football

  Nic Baker lofted a pass to Landon Lenoir in the end zone on the first play of overtime, and then the Salukis stifled a Western Illinois two-point conversion try to eke out a 31-30 victory on Saturday night. Myles Wanza burst 25 yards to score on Western Illinois' first play of overtime, but the Leathernecks went for the win, and the two-point conversion run by Dennis Houston was stopped at the 3-yard line.

Baker and Lenoir had hooked up with a 32-yard scoring pass early in the first quarter as Southern Illinois (4-1, 2-0 Missouri Valley Football Conference), ranked No. 7 in the FCS coaches poll, grabbed a 7-0 lead in just three plays and 57 seconds. The Salukis led 21-0 midway through the second quarter after Baker and Donnavan Spencer ran for touchdowns. The Western Illinois defense stiffened, and the Leathernecks (1-4, 1-1) had whittled the gap to 21-10 by halftime. Holding Southern Illinois to a field goal the rest of regulation, Western Illinois scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns to tie, 24-24 and force OT. Connor Sampson, who passed for 192 yards, fired touchdown passes of 27 yards to Dallas Daniels and 12 yards to Ludovick Choquette. Wanza had 13 carries for 89 yards. - AP College Football

  SEPT 27 MISSOURI VALLEY NOTABLE PERFORMANCE: WR Landon Lenoir, Southern Illinois - Caught 7 passes for 86 yards in SIU's 35-17 comeback win over Illinois State. The Salukis trailed, 17-0, midway through the third quarter, before exploding for 35 unanswered points. The first SIU touchdown was caught by Lenoir on a seven-yard pass from a scrambling Nic Baker. During the game, Lenoir surpassed 2,000 career receiving yards, becoming just the fourth player in school history to reach the plateau. - Missouri Valley Conference Football

  Nic Baker threw two touchdown passes and Javon Williams Jr., rushed for two in a Southern Illinois comeback that saw the Salukis score five unanswered touchdowns and defeat Illinois State 35-17 in a Missouri Valley Conference opener on Saturday. Jackson Waring's 1-yard touchdown run had given Illinois State (2-2, 0-1) a 17-0 lead early in the third quarter, but the game flipped from there as Southern Illinois (3-1, 1-0) forced two punts, a fumble and took over on downs three times on the Redbirds final six possessions. The Salukis, ranked No. 8 in the FCS coaches poll, compiled 371 yards of offense and converted eight of 15 tries on third down in their rally. Baker was 21 of 32 passing for 227 yards with a pair of touchdowns. He was also intercepted twice. Landon Lenoir rushed for 86 yards and a TD while Izaiah Hartrup gained 82 for Southern Illinois.   Nic Baker threw for three touchdowns and FCS top-10 ranked Southern Illinois beat Dayton 55-3 on Saturday night. Baker was 16-of-21 passing for 235 yards, including a 53-yard catch-and-run TD to Avante Cox. Cox and Landon Lenoir, who also had a TD, finished with 98 yards receiving each. Javon Williams Jr. rushed for 123 yards on three carries, all in the first half. His total included a 73-yard run for the game's first touchdown. Justin Strong added 75 yards, including a 12-yard score. The Salukis (2-1) led 38-0 at halftime, outgaining the Flyers 438-89, including just 14 Dayton rushing yards. For the game, SIU outgained Dayton 658-218. SIU's Anthony Knighton was credited with a shared sack, giving him 23.5 for his career and a school record. Sam Webster kicked a 38-yard field goal late in the third quarter, ensuring the Flyers' 489th straight game without a shutout, extending their NCAA all-division record. The sophomore QB improved to 4-0 as a starter at SIU by completing 25-of-34 passes with 4 TDs and one interception. His first pass of the game went for a school-record 99 yards to Avante Cox.   Nic Baker threw for a school-record 460 yards and four touchdowns and Southern Illinois beat Southeast Missouri 47-21 in a season opener Thursday night. Baker finished 25-of-34 passing with his yardage total breaking Sam Straub's record of 450 yards set against Western Illinois in 2016. Avante Cox made five catches for 187 yards, the first game of at least 150 yards receiving for the Salukis since 2017. The pair connected for a school-record 99-yard touchdown on the Salukis' first play from scrimmage.

Tied at 7, Baker threw two more touchdown passes and Justin Strong ran for another as the Salukis took off to a 28-7 halftime lead. Baker gave up a pick-6 to Mike Mathews in the second half before throwing his final TD pass early in the fourth quarter to end his night. Southern Illinois, coming in with top-10 rankings in the FCS polls, outgained the Redhawks 553-243, including 460-101 in the air.   La'Andre Thomas returned to Memphis after opting out last season, but the junior defensive back has now left the program again. Thomas announced Thursday that he entered the transfer portal a week before the Tigers' season opener against Nicholls State Sept. 4. Thomas has two years of eligibility remaining. Thomas did not say why he opted out but earlier this month, he called it a difficult decision while appreciating the chance to heal his body. When he returned this spring, Thomas was moved from safety - where he started all 14 games in 2019 - to cornerback. He said he was adjusting well to his new role and didn't have much difficulty with it. It was also the third time he's switched positions at Memphis after the Tigers initially recruited him as a quarterback. During his true freshman year, he moved to cornerback due to injuries in the secondary and in spring 2018, he shifted to safety. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  Louisville's depth at outside linebacker, specifically at its "DOG" position, is going to a be a strength of the defense. Yasir Abdullah is due for a big season, Okeke will back him up, but you also have Kameron Wilson. Abdullah will likely start, but Okeke is going to get a lot of snaps this season backing him up. The 6-foot-3 and 240-pound linebacker has had a good offseason and the coaching staff is excited about the tandem of Abdullah and Okeke this season. It's important to note that this offseason the staff mentioned how versatile Okeke was so there's a chance you see him moved around the linebacker corps as well. He had 30 tackles and two tackles for a loss last season. Coming off that season, into his redshirt junior year, Okeke looks poised to improve. If so, he'll be crucial to how much Louisville's defense improves, again, under defensive coordinator Bryan Brown. - Courier Journal

  Noah Fenske is ready for a fresh start, and the Colorado Buffaloes are happy to provide it. On Saturday, the former Iowa offensive lineman announced his decision to transfer to CU and join the football team this summer. Former Iowa offensive lineman Noah Fenske, who is tranferring to Colorado. Fenske played two seasons at Iowa and was listed as the second-team center this spring before putting his name in the NCAA transfer portal on Monday. After receiving interest from Missouri, UNLV, Southern Illinois and a few other schools, Fenske chose CU. "I had a few intriguing offers," Fenske told BuffZone, "but for me, it was the relationship I've built with (CU offensive line coach Mitch Rodrigue). Watching film with him, I believe that this program can win and win big-time games. I wanted to be a part of this program." Rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports.com coming out of New Hampton (Iowa) High School, Fenske redshirted in 2019. He appeared in one game, against Minnesota, last season. - Daily Camera

  Douglas took a massive step forward in 2020, leading the Chippewas in tackles during the six-game season. Now, he figures to be a mainstay in the Chippewas' 4-2-5 look as the middle linebacker. There are areas for him to develop, namely in pass coverage, but he's physical and athletic and those are two skills that spell success at his position. Douglas may get targeted a little more because of Brown working opposite him. There's also plenty of competition at the linebacker position with additions such as Michigan State transfer Marcel Lewis and freshman Lawai'a Brown, so that may lead to another uptick in production from the Ypsilanti native. - Central Michigan Life
