Chason Virgil completed an 8-yard touchdown pass to CJ Turner on fourth down with 2:56 left and SE Louisiana held off Villanova for a 45-44 win in the first round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday. Virgil finished with a career-high 474 yards passing and three TD passes for the Lions (8-4), who visit No. 6 seed Montana in the second round next Saturday. SE Louisiana erased a 31-14 halftime deficit with 17 straight points in the third quarter. The Wildcats (9-4) answered with leads of 38-31 and 44-38 in the fourth quarter, failing to convert the PAT on the second touchdown with 4:36 left in the game.

Jaaron Hayek caught a 40-yard TD pass from Daniel Smith that would have given the lead back to Villanova with 1:31 left, but Hayek was called for pass interference. That gave Villanova a first-and-25 from the Wildcats 45. Villanova turned it over on downs and SE Louisiana ran out the clock. Turner caught 11 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. Bransen Schwebel added six catches for 119 yards and Javon Conner had receptions for 102 yards and a score for the Lions. The Southeastern Louisiana football team's 2019 campaign will continue, as the Lions were among the 24-team FCS playoffs field announced by the NCAA on Sunday morning's selection show on ESPNU. The Lions will host Villanova on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Strawberry Stadium. The winner of the clash between SLU and the Wildcats will face No. 6 seed Montana in next Saturday's second round game at 2 p.m. in Missoula, Montana.

Southeastern (7-4, 6-3 Southland) received one of the 14 at-large berths into the field and will be competing in the postseason for the third time. The Lions previously earned playoff appearances in 2013 and 2014.

"I love our football team and we're proud to be able to represent our university in the FCS playoffs," Southeastern second-year head coach Frank Scelfo said. "We're thankful to the committee for recognizing our body of work. We're excited about continuing our season and facing a very good Villanova football team next Saturday in front of our home fans." Villanova finished 9-3 overall and posted a 5-3 record in the Colonial Athletics Association. Donniel Ward-Magee and Tre' Spann had two interceptions apiece as Southeast Louisiana intercepted six passes to win a share of the Southland Conference championship with a 35-17 win over Abilene Christian on Saturday. Xavier Lewis and Shawntrez Spates had the other two picks for the Lions (7-3, 6-2). Southland leaders SE Louisiana, Nicholls and Central Arkansas all won on Saturday and are tied for the conference championship. Sam Houston State dropped out of the tie, losing 31-28 to Northwestern State.

SE Louisiana quarterbacks threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns and the ground game added another 152 yards. Chason Virgil completed 19 of 30 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns for the Lions. Cole Kelly completed 11 of 17 for 76 yards. Devonte Williams had nine rushes for 48 yards with two touchdowns. The Lions scored all their points in the first half and led 35-7 at halftime. The biggest play was a 53-yard touchdown pass from Virgil to Matt DeBlaiso, his only reception of the game. CJ Turner caught seven passes for 74 yards. For the Wildcats (5-6, 4-5), Sema.J Davis completed 11 of 19 passes for 195 yards and Luke Anthony completed 5 of 13 for 53 yards. Both were intercepted three times.
