Christian Williams, a sophomore cornerback at Miami, went into the transfer portal Tuesday afternoon, AL.com has learned. A four-star member of Miami's 2019 recruiting class, Williams played in all 13 games for the Hurricanes last season and finished the year with five tackles. Williams, who was committed to the Crimson Tide from April 16, 2018 until Feb. 6, 2019, posted eight interceptions and was a first-team all-state selection as a senior at Daphne in 2018. - Birmingham News

  08/21/20 - Matthew HillrSr/2024, South Florida, 6-1, 187 (DS#146 CB) + More +

Matthew Hill will be going up for interceptions rather than receptions this year now that he has transitioned from a wide receiver into a defensive back. When Hill first arrived at Auburn, he came in as a four-star wide receiver out of Snelville, Georgia. He was ranked the 13th best player in Georgia and the 17th best receiver in the country. Hill hit the field as a true freshman with a fumble recovery and 22-yard rush against Alabama State and a carry in the Music City Bowl in 2018. Since he didn't play more than four games, he was able to take that year as a redshirt. Hill didn't record any catches.

Coach Gus Malzahn said in the spring that they would give Hill opportunities on defense, but spring never happened. When the roster came out, Hill was officially listed as a defensive back. Based on what safety Smoke Monday has seen, Hill is going to be able to help the Tigers out. "I feel like Matthew Hill is going to be a big contributor to the defense," Monday said. Despite two years on offense, Hill shows a lot of confidence when he steps onto the field as a defender. He's very smart and is learning the playbook well. Hill's athleticism has also helped in the transition. Monday said he's fast and has nice hips. Auburn's defensive backs learn to play all over the field, so Hill is getting reps at both cornerback and safety. In the few days of practice that Auburn's had, Hill has looked good at both positions. - Birmingham News

  07/27/20 - K.J. SailsrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 177 (DS#59 CB) + More +

2020 WUERFFEL TROPHY PRESEASON WATCH LIST: KJ Sails, USF, senior, defensive back,...Sails organized a unity walk in downtown Tampa in early June that led nearly 400 participants clad in black on a reflective and educational march through the Central Park Village neighborhood to the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church to highlight the quest for social justice and positive change. Sails has also been regularly involved in other community service projects during his time at USF.

Heading into his senior campaign, and second at USF after transferring from North Carolina. The cornerback earned second-team all-conference postseason honors in 2019 as he led the Bulls with five takeaways and three interceptions while finishing 15th in the conference with nine passes defended and tallying 42 tackles. Sails also returned 12 punts for 117 yards in his first season on the field for USF. His 9.8 yards per return average would have ranked second in the conference, but he was just shy of having enough returns to qualify. - South Florida Football

As you listen to Nebraska defensive coordinator Erik Chinander discuss the importance of length and athletic ability in players, it's almost impossible to not think of Braxton Clark. After all, he's 6-foot-4 and 210 pounds. Yes, a rangy corner. "The thing about length and athletic ability is when your playing radius increases, the chance for error decreases," Chinander said during the spring. "When you're not as long, it's harder to make up for some things when you get cut out of a gap or you get a bad jump or something like that. But when you're longer, you can get away with some stuff."

A sophomore from Orlando, Florida, Clark has an excellent chance to lock down the starting corner spot vacated by Lamar Jackson, a senior in 2019. Clark is intriguing in that, although he is still considered a youthful player on the roster, he also could be classified as an established contributor. He played in every game in 2019 and started against Purdue late in the season. He finished the year with 11 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. - Lincoln Journal Star

While Division I college sports are still waiting to see what this fall might look like, the junior college level is calling it a wrap on 2020. The National Junior College Athletic Association announced Monday that it will be moving some of its fall sports to the spring of 2021. That includes football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball. Winter sports such as basketball will begin in January as opposed to their regular late-fall opening date. Cross country and half-marathon teams will be permitted to compete in the fall.

"Our greatest focus is and always has been providing the best opportunities for our student-athletes," NJCAA president Dr. Christopher Parker said in a statement. "Through a unified effort from our Presidential Advisory Council, the Board of Regents, and leadership staff, our most recent plan of action provides a path that keeps our student-athletes competing at the highest level with proper safety measures in place." According to a statement from the Mississippi Association of Community Colleges, the representative who could've voted on behalf of Mississippi's junior colleges abstained from the final vote. - Clarion Ledger

Former University of Miami starting quarterback Jarren Williams has found a new home, per multiple reports. Williams is transferring to Garden City Community College in Kansas, as first reported late Sunday night by @JuCoFootballACE. Williams, who showed significant talent and promise, won the UM starting job before the 2019 season, then fizzled in a season that reached the highest of highs, and finally, the lowest of lows. He redshirted his first season at Miami in 2018, announced his entry to the transfer portal in January and now has three years of eligibility remaining.

By playing at a community college, Williams does not have to sit out a season, which he likely would have had to had he chosen to transfer to a Football Bowl Subdvision member. He could go straight to the NFL after the 2020 season, if he were drafted or signed a free agent's contract. Williams set a Hurricanes' school record with six passing touchdowns Nov. 9 in a dominating 52-27 performance against Louisville. But he ended the 2019 season with three poor performances against FIU, Duke and Louisiana Tech, all losses for the eventual 6-7 Canes. - Miami Herald

  05/26/20 - Darrian FelixrSr/2023, South Florida, 5-10, 190 (DS#999 RB) + More +

New USF tailback Darrian Felix, who appeared in seven games for Oregon last fall, announced via social media Tuesday he has been declared eligible for the 2020 season. USF also confirmed the news. Because he appeared in more than four contests in 2019, Felix needed an NCAA waiver to earn immediate eligibility with the Bulls. One of the most prominent of the Bulls' transfer-portal acquisitions - Felix, a 5-foot-11, 197-pound Fort Myers native - had an injury-besieged career with the Duck before arriving at USF in December. Last fall, he had 197 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries, with six catches for 78 yards. - Tampa Tribune

USF's roster replenishment via the transfer portal continued Friday with the Bulls getting a commitment from rangy Northern Illinois tight end Mitchell Brinkman. A 6-foot-3, 252-pound Iowa native, Brinkman spent four years with the Huskies, breaking out last fall (34 catches, 445 yards, three touchdowns) after totaling 11 receptions his first three seasons. He'll arrive as a graduate transfer and be eligible immediately. He also had seriously considered Texas Tech and Temple. "I just feel it's the best fit for me as a player," Brinkman said in a direct message Friday. "Coach (Jeff) Scott, coach (Charlie) Weis (Jr., offensive coordinator) and coach (Joey) King (tight ends coach) were incredible throughout the process, and that made it very apparent they were the coaching staff I wanted to play for my senior year." Brinkman is the third veteran acquired by USF via the portal in the last month, joining Michigan linebacker Devin Gil and Wofford defensive tackle Thad Mangum. - Tampa Tribune

  04/14/20 - Devin GilrSr/2022, South Florida, 6-0, 236 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

Michigan linebacker Devin Gil has decided to play his final year of college football closer to home. The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native announced on social media Tuesday that he plans to transfer to the University of South Florida. Gil, who posted a graphic of him in a Bulls uniform, expects to graduate from Michigan this spring, making him immediately eligible to play in 2020. "I'm coming home," a message reads on the graphic, which includes an aerial photo of Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, where USF's football team plays its games. Gil announced in March plans to enter the transfer portal, thanking head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Don Brown for giving him an opportunity in Ann Arbor.

The 6-foot-1, 236-pound Gil appeared in 39 games from 2017 to 2019, starting 14 of them, including all 13 games at weak-side linebacker as a sophomore. But his playing time fell off last fall, relegated mainly to special teams and as a rotational fill-in at linebacker. He totaled 47 tackles (four for a loss) and 1 1/2 sacks for the Wolverines. A former three-star recruit, Gil arrived at Michigan in 2016 from Flanagan High School, where he was coached by Devin Bush Sr., who later took a job at Michigan. Bush departed the program in February to become the director of recruiting at Ole Miss. - Ann Arbor News

  04/07/20 - Greg ReavesSr/2020, South Florida, 6-2, 245 (DS#58 OLB) + More +

March 30 arrived and departed on USF's desolate campus with nary a bench press or broad jump. The Bulls' pro day, scheduled for that bright Monday morning, became yet another coronavirus cancellation. Or did it? Since the nixing of the annual pre-draft event, which typically attracts dozens of NFL and CFL scouts, a handful of would-be Bulls participants have improvised with personal pro day-style workouts, posting their "combine" results on social media.

Offensive lineman Marcus Norman and defensive end Greg Reaves, training these days at Cooper Performance in west Tampa, did theirs locally on March 24-25. Norman was the only USF alumnus among the Cooper trainees who did most of their combine drills on Skyway Park's synthetic-turf field. "And the county actually came and shut it down because we had too many people out there," Reaves said. "So (the defensive prospects) actually ended up having to go out to USF. We were able to get on the field for about an hour and get some stuff done." - Tampa Tribune

  04/03/20 - Noah JohnsonrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 198 (DS#22 QB) + More +

Former Armwood standout Noah Johnson, the SWAC Offensive Player of the Year two seasons ago at Alcorn State, announced Thursday via Twitter that he'll play his final collegiate season at USF as a graduate transfer. Limited to only three games last season due to a separated AC joint, Johnson said the NCAA approved his request for a medical waiver. He becomes USF's fifth scholarship quarterback for 2020. He'll also be reunited with Bulls running backs coach Pat White, who spent the previous two years as Alcorn State's quarterbacks coach.

"I am so thankful for this opportunity," said Johnson, who graduated last May with a degree in sports management, in a text message. "Also very grateful for Coach (Jeff) Scott and staff giving me a chance to not only further my education but continue athletics back home. I'm super excited to get started with the guys." A 6-foot dual threat recruited primarily as a receiver by Division I-A schools, Johnson opted for Alcorn, which assured him a chance to play behind center. He threw for 2,207 yards and ran for 1,080 two seasons ago, setting a school record with a 92-yard scoring run. He ranked third in Division I-AA in yards per carry (7.5) and 16th in completion percentage (.621), leading the Braves (9-4) to the SWAC title. - Tampa Tribune

Alcorn State University 2018 SWAC Player of the Year Noah Johnson will transfer to the University of South Florida to further his football career. After suffering a season-ending injury in 2019, Johnson received a hardship waiver so that he is eligible for a sixth year in football. He will be leaving Alcorn as a graduate transfer which automatically makes him eligible to play in the 2020 season instead of having to sit out for a year. - Vicksburg News

  03/11/20 - Devin GilrSr/2022, South Florida, 6-0, 236 (DS#999 ILB) + More +

One week before the start of spring practice, the Michigan football team is losing one of its most experienced linebackers. Devin Gil, who appeared in 39 games over the last three seasons for the Wolverines, says he's entering the transfer portal. Gil made the announcement Tuesday evening in a post on social media, signaling plans to graduate from the University of Michigan this spring and play right away in 2020. "I would like to thank the University of Michigan for providing me with the opportunity to earn my college degree while pursuing my love of football," Gil wrote.

"I would also like to thank coach (Jim) Harbaugh and coach (Don) Brown for the knowledge that I have gained and for the experiences that I was fortunate to have participated in here at the University of Michigan." Gil, a Pembroke Pines, Fla., native, totaled 47 tackles (four for a loss) and 1 1/2 sacks over the course of his career at Michigan. He redshirted his freshman season in 2016 before gaining more responsibilities in 2017. Then, Gil started all 13 games at weak-side linebacker and turned in a productive 2018 season, totaling 33 tackles (3 1/2 for a loss) and 1 1/2 sacks. - Ann Arbor News
