  04/04/21 - K.J. SailsrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 177 (DS#59 CB) + More +

As defensive back KJ Sails went through the most important workout of his life Thursday during USF's pro day, an NFL scout stopped him with an odd-sounding request. He wanted to find out more about the governor. "It was kind of funny," Sails said. "I didn't really think that they did their research about that type of stuff on me." Sails, of course, is not the governor. The East Bay High alumnus merely spent a day as Tampa's honorary mayor in February. But as pro teams continue their research about the NFL hopeful ahead of this month's draft, they'll discover an impressive player who will make an impact far beyond any locker room.

Sails' onfield influence was strong enough during his two seasons at USF. After arriving as a transfer from North Carolina in 2019, he started 20 games for the Bulls and was one of their bright spots during a rough stretch. He earned second-team all-conference honors as a junior and would have participated in an all-star showcase or two this offseason, had they not been cancelled because of the pandemic. His impression on the community was equally notable. Amid the nationwide unrest after George Floyd's death over the summer, Sails organized a unity walk from downtown Tampa to Central Park Village. Mayor Jane Castor became his mentor and awarded him the key to the city. "I'm thankful to impact my community, because this community means a lot to me," Sails said. "I grew up here. I was born and raised here. A lot of my family's from here. It's a blessing." - Tampa Tribune

  12/02/20 - Matthew HillrSr/2024, South Florida, 6-1, 187 (DS#146 CB) + More +

Auburn defensive back Matthew Hill intends to enter the transfer portal, the redshirt sophomore confirmed on his Instagram account. Hill, a former wide receiver, has only played in three games for Auburn this season but has not seen the field in each of the last five games for the Tigers. "Beginning of a new chapter," Hill posted on his Instagram story. Hill's decision to seek a transfer was first reported by AuburnSports.com. According to a source, Hill's name is not yet officially in the transfer portal, but by rule Auburn has 48 hours to enter his name into the database once the request is made.

With Hill's decision to transfer, each of Auburn's four highest-rated signees in the 2018 recruiting class -- four-star quarterback Joey Gatewood, four-star defensive tackle Coynis Miller Jr. and four-star running back Harold Joiner -- have departed the program. Gatewood transferred in the middle of last season, while Miller left the team in September, three weeks before the start of this season, and Joiner entered the transfer portal Oct. 6. A former four-star recruit, Hill was rated as the No. 92 overall player in the 2019 class and signed with Auburn as a wide receiver. - Birmingham News

  11/22/20 - K.J. SailsrSr/2021, South Florida, 5-10, 177 (DS#59 CB) + More +

USF senior cornerback K.J. Sails will not play his final two games of the season after sustaining a knee injury during Saturday's 56-21 loss at Houston, coach Jeff Scott said Tuesday. Sails will not, however, require surgery while he recovers. Sails, an East Bay High alumnus and local philanthropist who organized a unity walk through Tampa in June, finished the season with 22 tackles in eight games. In 2019, Sails finished with 42 tackles and three interceptions and was named to the American Athletic Conference second team. The loss of Sails is yet another significant blow to USF's already strained roster, which after COVID-19 issues, injuries and players simply opting out from playing, is down to 64. - Tampa Tribune

  10/16/20 - NayQuan WrightrSr/2025, South Florida, 5-08, 196 (DS#58 RB) + More +

Some might say running back Nay'Quan Wright has come out of nowhere to become Florida's newest playmaker on offense. The reality is, he didn't come out of nowhere. He came from somewhere. And that somewhere - Miami - has shaped who he is and how he plans to live his life. "Growing up as a kid in Miami, I faced a lot of obstacles," Wright said. "(It taught me that) some bumps in the road are going to come. They may hit you unexpectedly, but you have to move on. Adversity, it builds a person. I'm a person that it built. I don't dwell on it. I just move forward." The biggest and most harrowing adversity came early in his life, when he was 11 or 12. It came unexpectedly, out of nowhere, when shots rang out near his football practice one day and he was struck by a bullet.

"It was just a regular day at practice," Wright said. "Shots (were) fired, and coach was yelling, 'Get down.' Everyone got down. And then a bullet ricochet off the ground hit me. And I noticed a couple other people got shot also. "The doctor said I wouldn't (live). My family got a call that I had passed away. I overcame that with the grace of God." Wright said the incident changed him as a person. The biggest thing it did was strengthen his faith. "It just made my connection with God pretty (strong)," he said. "As a person, he changed me, made me always move on and don't take life for granted, just let me know that my life is not my own." - Times Union
