  06/24/20 - Jake BentleyrSr/2022, South Alabama, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

In a recent interview with a newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, quarterback Jake Bentley reemphasized his decision to play his final college season at Utah. The graduate transfer played and started in 33 games for South Carolina before making the move. He was limited to one game last season because of a foot injury. "I just felt like I needed a new start," Bentley told The State. "I love (Will) Muschamp and I'm so thankful for all that he's done for me and my family. But I think for me it was just something that I needed to do."

Bentley made his decision in December and enrolled at Utah shortly thereafter. He's competing with Texas transfer Cam Rising and veteran Drew Lisk for the starting job vacated by the graduation of Tyler Huntley. "Going into it, I told my dad and all of the other coaches that were talking to me that I wanted a situation where I could grow as a person and a football player. Those were the two big things I was looking for. Utah really is a special place." - Deseret News

Utah quarterback Jake Bentley wrote a post that shares his thoughts on race in America. The former South Carolina quarterback posted this message on Twitter as protests continued over the death of George Floyd. Here's what Bentley shared: "I once had the opportunity to speak with Tim Tebow and I asked him what he told his team when down in the 4th quarter. "'Why not us? Why can't we be the guys that shock the world?' was his response. "Over the past couple of days I've thought about this a lot. Not in terms of football but about life. "Why can't we be the generation that puts an end to racism? Why can't we shock the world and kneel with a fellow black teammate? Your views on the kneeling might be completely different than theirs. But that's not the point, the point is that you recognize the pain and suffering that the black community is in and have been for generations because of racial inequality. While you might not have experienced the same pain, you recognize the need for change in America," he wrote. Bentley is a senior graduate transfer from South Carolina. He was sidelined for all but one game last year with an injury. In his career with the Gamecocks, he threw for 7,527 yards, 55 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. - Deseret News

A 33-game starter across parts of four seasons at the University of South Carolina, Bentley committed to the Utes on Dec. 9, then arrived in Salt Lake City on Jan. 3, three days before the start of the spring semester. Bentley went through the offseason program, then opened a three-way quarterback competition with redshirt sophomore Cam Rising and redshirt junior Drew Lisk. Utah's three spring practices gave way to a week off for spring break. The Utes never returned after the COVID-19 pandemic struck, indefinitely postponing all in-person team-related activities. At the end of the day, I think we all would've shown what we can do on the football field," Bentley said Tuesday on a conference call with beat reporters from his family's home in Lexington, S.C. "Spring practice would've allowed us to do that. It would have been clear who it was, but I think it goes back to my point that each day is an opportunity to compete.

"It would've definitely been a fun situation to have those scrimmages and those game-like reps, but the situation we're in will take us to fall camp, whenever that is, so I guess it'll shake out then. That's why this time is so important, to not take any steps back and to keep getting better." Bentley suffered a season-ending Lisfranc injury to his right foot on the final play of the 2019 season-opener. He was a full participant once spring ball started at Utah, but still had a plate in the injured foot. Once Bentley was home in South Carolina and it was clear spring practice would not be resuming for the foreseeable future, Utes head football athletic trainer Joe McBeth advised Bentley to have the plate removed. - Salt Lake Tribune
