Braxton Burmeister threw for one touchdown, caught a pass for another and Virginia Tech ran for 320 yards Saturday night and beat Virginia 29-24. Burmeister, who also ran for 115 yards, hit Tayvion Robinson for a 61-yard touchdown and caught a 3-yard pass from Robinson on a double-reverse as the Hokies (6-6, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) won for the 17th time in the last 18 meetings. They also achieved bowl eligibility for the 28th time in 29 years.

Virginia (6-6, 4-4), limited to three second-half points, drove to the Virginia Tech 9 after recovering a fumble with just over 3 minutes left, but Brennan Armstrong's pass to Ra'Shaun Henry in the end zone on fourth-and 13 from the 14 with 35 seconds left fell incomplete, capping a wild final few minutes. When it was over, Hokies fans stormed the field, surrounding their team. Raheem Blackshear lead the Hokies ground attack with 169 yards on 18 carries, including a 50-yarder, and Burmeister got his on just 12, including a 71-yard burst. The Hokies had three plays that covered at least 50 yards. Oddly, in a game where both teams approached 500 yards of offense, Burmeister was stopped at the 3 on his long run and the Hokies failed to score, backup quarterback Connor Blumrick's fourth-down pass falling incomplete. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football

Jordon Brookshire led No. 22 San Diego State to 24 unanswered points after replacing Lucas Johnson late in the first half, and the Aztecs claimed the Mountain West's West Division title with a 27-16 victory over Boise State on Friday. Brookshire passed for 192 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 46 yards and another score for the Aztecs (11-1, 7-1), who celebrated at their temporary home in the Los Angeles suburbs after completing their first 11-win regular season in 99 years of football. The Aztecs, who have never had a 12-win season, will host the Mountain West title game next Saturday, Dec. 4, against Air Force or Utah State. San Diego State erased an early 13-point deficit with a bounce-back effort from its vaunted defense, which shut out the Broncos (7-5, 5-3) over the final 38 minutes.

Brookshire also transformed the struggling San Diego State offense when he took over on the penultimate drive of the first half. On their next four drives, the Aztecs turned a 13-point deficit into an 11-point lead. Jesse Matthews caught nine passes for 133 yards, and Greg Bell rushed for a touchdown. Kurt Rafdal and Khalil Shakir caught early TD passes from Hank Bachmeier for the Broncos, whose four-game winning streak ended. Boise State has its first five-loss season since 2013 under first-year head coach Andy Avalos, a native of nearby Corona, California. Patrick McMorris made two of the Aztecs' three interceptions, and Jonah Tavai got three of their four sacks while the defense harassed and hit Bachmeier throughout the second half, forcing backup Jack Sears to play the final two series. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Lucas Johnson completed 18 of 24 pass attempts for 192 yards and threw three touchdowns, and No. 23 San Diego State survived a scare to beat UNLV 28-20 on Friday night. The Aztecs led just 21-20 before Johnson found Jesse Matthews for a 7-yard strike with 3:33 left in the game. San Diego State linebacker Seyddrick Lakalaka intercepted UNLV quarterback Justin Rogers with less than 2 minutes left in the game to thwart the Rebels' last-ditch effort. San Diego State, which finished with a 5-0 road mark, improved to 10-1 overall, matching its best 11-game start since starting 10-0 in 1969. The Aztecs are one of five teams in the country currently with 10 wins, joining Cincinnati, Georgia, Houston, and UTSA.

Matthews finished with nine receptions for 75 yards and had three touchdowns, becoming the first San Diego State player to score three TDs in one game since Colin Lockett's trio in the 2001 New Orleans Bowl. Las Vegas product Elijah Kothe finished with five receptions for 84 yards for the Aztecs, while Greg Bell ran for 52 yards on 14 carries. While San Diego State improved to 21-10 all-time against the Rebels (2-9), UNLV outgained the Aztecs, 394-290. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Greg Bell had 16 carries for 104 yards and Matt Araiza kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:21 to play to help No. 22 San Diego State beat Nevada 23-21 on Saturday night. San Diego State (9-1, 5-1 Mountain West) took sole possession of first place in the West Division, a half-game ahead of Fresno State - which beat the Aztecs 30-20 on Oct. 30 - and a full game in front of Nevada. Araiza - who kicked field goals of 48 yards in the second quarter and 39 yards early in the fourth - bent the winner inside the upright to cap a 12-play, 53-yard drive. He also had five punts for 278 yards (55.6 yards per punt) and lead the FBS this season with 50 punts of 50-plus yards and 15 punts of 60 yards or more. Carson Strong completed 34 of 48 passes for 350 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions. He hit Romeo Doubs for a 5-yard touchdown late in the third quarter and pair connected on a play-action pass for a 54-yard TD that made it 21-20 with 9:57 to play and give Nevada (7-3, 4-2) its first lead. Doubs finished with nine receptions for 127 yards. - San Diego State/AP College Football

Braxton Burmeister threw for 215 yards and a career-high three touchdowns to lift Virginia Tech to a 48-17 victory over Duke on Saturday. The Hokies (5-5, 3-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) entered the game having lost four of their previous five games, including heartbreakers to Notre Dame (32-29) and Syracuse (41-36) in the waning moments. But Virginia Tech grabbed a 14-0 lead against Duke and never trailed in setting season highs in points and scoring margin. "Just proud of our kids - their perseverance through tough, adverse times," Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said. "They continue to amaze all of us in this building that see them every single day with their resilient nature and their care for each other." Added Fuente, "It's a lot of fun to watch. Inspiring, quite honestly, to the coaches and everyone around them. Just have a lot of fun being around them. It's a great group of kids." Raheem Blackshear added 117 yards rushing and scored touchdowns both rushing and receiving for the Hokies, who amassed more than 500 yards of offense (573) for the first time in 43 games. Virginia Tech's 374 first-half yards were more than it had accumulated in six of nine previous games this season.

Of the 573 yards, 297 came on the ground and 276 through the air, as the Hokies displayed their most balanced attack this season. Three players - Blackshear, Keshawn King (90), and Burmeister (71) - finished with more than 70 yards rushing. "It's definitely exciting because it keeps the defense guessing," Virginia Tech receiver Tayvion Robinson said. Burmeister, who missed nearly all of the Hokies' 17-3 loss at Boston College because of an injury, returned and completed touchdown passes of 47 yards to King, 30 yards to Kaleb Smith, and 13 yards to Blackshear. Backup quarterback Jordan Moore led Duke (3-7, 0-6), which lost its sixth consecutive game, with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown. - Virginia Tech/AP College Football
