  Northern Illinois University wide receiver and kick returner Trayvon Rudolph will miss the 2022 football season after suffering a noncontact knee injury during preseason practices this week, head coach Thomas Hammock announced Friday. No further information was available. Rudolph led the Huskies with 51 catches for 892 yards and seven touchdowns last year, including 14 catches for 309 yards and three scores against Kent State. - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

  2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Trayvon Rudolph, Northern Illinois,...As a sophomore, Rudolph was an All-MAC selection as both a receiver and kick returner. He led NIU with 1,462 all-purpose yards for an average of 104.4 per game and scored touchdowns rushing, receiving and on a kickoff return. As a receiver, Rudolph led NIU with 51 catches for 892 yards and seven touchdowns, including a pair of 75-yard scores. As a returner, he averaged 25.1 yards per kick return to lead the MAC and scored on a 100-yard kickoff return against Bowling Green. He also totaled 113 rushing yards on eight carries to average 14.1 yards per rush and scored on a 75-yard run at Buffalo.   2022 PRESEASON PAUL HORNUNG AWARD WATCH LIST: Jordan Byrd, San Diego State,...Byrd, who recently became San Diego State's second MW Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year honoree, and is a two-time all-MW selection at kick returner (first team in 2021, second team in 2020) returned 22 kickoffs for 601 yards (27.3 avg.) with a 100-yard kick return touchdown in 2021 while returning 27 punts for 193 yards (7.1 avg.). Byrd, also rushed 37 times for 246 yards (6.6 avg.) with three touchdowns and a long of 55 yards, while making 13 catches for 76 yards (5.8 avg.) with a long of 20 yards in 2021.

McDonald, who was also named to the MW preseason all-conference team on Thursday, has started 31 straight games and played in 48 consecutive games for the Aztecs dating back to the 2018 season.   San Diego State running back Chance Bell is aiming to bring "explosive" power to the football field this fall. To that end, the super senior from Burbank joined wide receiver teammates Jesse Matthews and Tyrell Shavers doing some private workouts that focused on plyometrics. The routines involve jump training that exerts maximum force on muscles in short bursts. "I couldn't just keep doing the same thing, regular lifting and maintenance and cone drills, and expect different results," said Bell, who joined teammate Caden McDonald in Las Vegas this week for Mountain West football media days. "The plyometrics (develops) explosive power. Running into contact and running through contact is, obviously, really important for a running back."

The 5-foot-10 Bell said he has added 15 pounds of good weight, increasing his frame to 200 pounds. "That will all translate in what I'm hoping to do, get to another level and having a productive season," said Bell, SDSU's top returning running back after rushing for 341 yards and four touchdowns last season. Bell and Jordan Byrd, another super senior returning for the Aztecs, came out of spring practice as the team's starting running backs.   San Diego State linebacker Caden McDonald didn't put his tooth under his pillow in the hope of enriching himself after it was knocked out against Utah last season. McDonald has profited from the loss nonetheless. "A lot of people take losing a front tooth as a negative thing," said McDonald, a 6-foot-3 senior from Haslet, Texas. "You get your tooth knocked out and think, 'Dang, this sucks. Well, what now?' ... "I turned it into a business opportunity. I started my own clothing line." McDonald branded himself the Toothless Cowboy, the idea sparked when he was wearing a cowboy hat and a toothless grin in a TikTok photo.   Since he signed with USC in 2019 as one of the nation's top tight end prospects, Jude Wolfe has been a forgotten man at a largely forgotten position. "It hasn't been everything I expected," Wolfe said this week. But after three seasons of being overlooked and underused, USC's tight ends are finally expected to play a pivotal part in Lincoln Riley's offense, and Wolfe, in the emerging role of H-back, could very well be its linchpin. Integrating an H-back isn't by any means an innovative offensive concept.

Its roots date to the 1980s NFL, when Washington coach Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls while regularly deploying two tight ends on his offense, one of which would offset from the line of scrimmage as the designated H-back. The position has evolved plenty since, amid the advent of the spread offense. But Riley's system takes that position several steps further, using it as a hybrid puzzle piece meant to unlock whatever the offense might need in any given moment. Its value, the coach explains, is in its versatility. "It's a great position," Riley said. "It's a position we've used probably as uniquely as anybody in the college football over the last several years." - Los Angeles Times
