  Redshirt freshman J.R. Tran-Reno, a versatile running back seemingly fit for Vanderbilt's new offense, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Tran-Reno announced his decision on Twitter on Wednesday, just over three weeks until the Commodores' season opener against No. 13 Texas A&M on Sept. 26. "After much prayer and consideration, my family and I have decided to enter my name into the transfer portal," Tran-Reno posted. "Nothing but respect and love for my teammates and coaches at Vanderbilt. I wish my boys the best this year and years to come!" Tran-Reno, a three-star prospect and 2017 Alabama Mr. Football finalist, signed with Vanderbilt in the 2019 class as an athlete by position. At Briarwood Christian in Birmingham, Alabama, he racked up more than 4,000 yards and 54 touchdowns as a rusher, receiver and passer. But he never played a game at Vanderbilt. - The Tennessean

He returned one punt for a 59-yard touchdown late in the first quarter of the team's game at Western Carolina, turning the momentum and helping lead the Bulldogs to a 31-13 win. For his efforts, Washington was named the Southern Conference's Special Teams Player of the Week. Washington also returned kickoffs for Samford, returning seven kicks for an average of 22.1 yards per return.   NOV 18 SOCON SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Montrell Washington, Samford, Jr., WR/KR, Canton, Ga.,...Samford wide receiver/kick returner Montrell Washington produced one of the biggest plays in the Bulldogs' 31-13 win at Western Carolina on Saturday. With Samford trailing 10-0 in the first quarter, Washington returned a punt 59 yards for a touchdown, getting the Bulldogs on the board and swinging moment in the contest. The junior from Canton, Georgia, also returned one kick for 21 yards and caught an eight-yard pass to total 88 all-purpose yards on the afternoon. Washington's punt return for a score was just the second in the league this season.   Liam Welch passed for one score and ran for another as Samford rallied past Western Carolina 31-13 on Saturday. The Bulldogs (5-6, 4-4 Southern Conference) spotted Western Carolina (3-8, 2-6) a 10-point lead before a punt return for a TD, a Welch run and a Mitchell Fineran field goal gave Stanford a 17-13 lead by halftime. Montrell Washington fielded a Western Carolina punt and raced 59 yards for Samford's first score. The Bulldogs scored on their next two possessions - Welch, who rushed for a career-high 105 yards, capping a 13-play drive with a fourth-and-goal keeper from the 1. Jaleel Laguins recovered a Western Carolina fumble and Fineran turned it into points with his 43-yard field goal.   SEPT 30/WEEK 5 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Liam Welch, Samford, Jr., QB, Augusta, Ga.,...Samford quarterback Liam Welch entered Saturday's 61-55, four-overtime win over No. 25 The Citadel in the third quarter after an injury to starter Chris Oladokun and proceeded to throw for 189 yards and three touchdowns and run for 24 yards and a score to lead the Bulldogs to the upset.

Welch recorded his first two passing TDs in the final eight minutes of regulation, including a 67-yard scoring strike with 1:43 left, to knot the score at 38 and send the game to OT. On the Bulldogs' first overtime possession, the Augusta, Georgia, junior fired a 25-yard touchdown pass, which The Citadel answered. After the squads traded TDs and field goals, Welch gave the homestanding Bulldogs the walk-off win with a 2-yard touchdown run.   Liam Welch scored on a 2-yard run in the fourth overtime and Samford held off The Citadel 61-55 on Saturday. The Bulldogs of The Citadel trailed 24-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but Brandon Rainey connected with Raleigh Webb for a 17-yard touchdown, Jacob Godek kicked a 23-yard field goal and Rainey added a 1-yard TD run as the Citadel scored 17 straight points to take a 38-24 lead with 8:08 left in regulation. Backup quarterback Welch answered with a 10-play, 75-yard drive that he capped with a 5-yard TD toss to Michael Vice to pull the Bulldogs of Samford (3-2, 2-0 Southern Conference) within 38-31. Following a punt by The Citadel that gave Samford the ball at its own 20-yard line, Welch used three plays before hitting A.J. Toney for a 67-yard scoring strike to knot the score at 38.

The two teams traded two touchdowns and a field goal through the first three overtimes before the Samford defense kept The Citadel (2-3. 0-1) scoreless, leading to the game-winning drive. Welch completed 9 of 18 passes for 189 yards and three TDs with one interception for Samford. Samford starting QB Chris Oladokun hit 9 of 18 passes for 129 yards and ran for 18 yards and two scores. Jay Stanton rushed for 97 yards and two TDs on 15 carries, while Toney finished with six catches for 102 yards. Rainey connected on 6 of 7 passes for 196 yards and two scores for The Citadel.
