Football is returning in the Western Athletic Conference, this time at the Championship Subdivision level. The league announced this week it would add four schools from the Southland Conference and one from the Big Sky to bring its membership to 13. The five new members will join Dixie State and Tarleton State in a WAC football League. The WAC continues to seek an eighth football member that would bring league membership to 14 schools, but no timetable for that is set. The new members are Abilene Christian, Lamar, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin from the Southland and Southern Utah from the Big Sky. The four Southland schools are on track to become members in July, with Southern Utah joining in July 2022, assistant commissioner of media relations Chris Thompson said Friday. He added that it's anticipated a six-team WAC football league will begin this fall. - AP College Football

  12/25/20 - Grant GunnellrSr/2025, Sam Houston, 6-5, 220 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Grant Gunnell is still a Cat, just not the one that wears red and blue, but one that dons royal blue and Tiger stripes on their helmets. The former Arizona Wildcats quarterback, who left the UA after two seasons in Tucson, following the dismissal of head coach Kevin Sumlin, reportedly transferred to Memphis on Thursday, according to 247Sports' Christian Fowler. Gunnell formerly was committed to Texas A&M when Sumlin was still in College Station and maintained a close relationship with offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, who often compared Gunnell to former protege Brock Osweiler. The 6-foot-6-inch, 228-pound Gunnell completed 165 of 248 passes for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns, and went 1-7 as a starter in two seasons. The 6-2, 203-pound Curry had 16 catches for 157 yards. - Arizona Star News

Arizona fired football coach Kevin Sumlin following a blowout loss to rival Arizona State that extended a record losing streak. Sumlin was fired Saturday, less than 24 hours after a 70-7 loss to Arizona State that stretched the Wildcats' losing streak to 12 games spanning two seasons. "When we hired Kevin three years ago, we had very high hopes for our football program," Arizona athletic director Dave Heeke said in a statement. "Unfortunately, we simply have not seen the results and upward trajectory in our program that we needed to, and I believe now is the time for a change in leadership. I thank Kevin for his service to the University of Arizona and wish him the very best in the future." Heeke said the school will honor the terms of Sumlin's existing contract, including a $7.5 million buyout. Sumlin entered this year on the hot seat after the Wildcats closed the 2019 season with seven straight losses. - AP College Football

  12/10/20 - Grant GunnellrSr/2025, Sam Houston, 6-5, 220 (DS#999 QB) + More +

The status of Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell remained unclear Monday afternoon when Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin addressed the media ahead of the Territorial Cup. Gunnell hurt his shoulder on the first play of the UCLA game on Nov. 28. He did not return and sat out last week's loss against Colorado. Gunnell could be seen stretching and working with a trainer during pregame warmups, but he did not throw any passes. The Wildcats practiced Sunday evening. Their latest meeting with rival Arizona State kicks off Friday, so the team - and Gunnell - will have one fewer day to get ready.

Asked if he had an update on Gunnell, Sumlin said: "Not yet. We'll probably know a little bit more today and tomorrow, let's just put it that way. He didn't do anything last week. So we're going to defer to our medical team and see where he is later on in the week." Sumlin added that Gunnell would need to practice in order to play. After starting three games as a freshman last year, Gunnell took over the No. 1 job in spring. In two-plus games, he has completed 52 of 76 passes (68.4%) for 547 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. - Arizona Star News

  12/05/20 - Dezmon JacksonrSr/2023, Sam Houston, 5-11, 214 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Jackson rushed for 1,216 yards and 13 touchdowns on 163 rushing attempts in 2018 and the interested from Division I programs came with his performance. While many of his offers came from Group 5 programs such as Grambling State, Ohio and Western Kentucky, he did catch the eye of in-state program Kansas State, as well as nearby Oklahoma State. The Cowboy program has had a recent success of turning out an NFL talent at tailback coming out of the junior college ranks - Chris Carson, who played at Butler County Community (also in Kansas) and is now the starting running back for the Super Bowl contending Seattle Seahawks.

"I knew of some certain guys in the NFL that went the JUCO route and ended up in Division I, like Alvin Kamara went to my JUCO and Cordarrelle Patterson (also went to Hutchinson)," Jackson said. "So, a lot of big-time names have gone to JUCO, so when I got there I wasn't really aware." His journey through the Great Plains the past five years led to his breakout moment on a nationally telecast Big 12 Conference contest. He gave the anemic Oklahoma State offense a shot in the arm when the tailbacks - which had been dealing with nagging injuries for the better part of the season - were ruled out for the game, with his longest run of 23 yards being just nine yards short of Hubbard's longest rush this season. - Stillwater Press

  12/01/20 - Grant GunnellrSr/2025, Sam Houston, 6-5, 220 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Arizona quarterback Grant Gunnell's status for the Colorado game Saturday is still being evaluated, Wildcats coach Kevin Sumlin said. Gunnell injured his right (throwing) shoulder on the first play from scrimmage in Arizona's loss at UCLA last week. He did not return. "We'll see where he is," Sumlin said during his weekly news conference Monday. "If he can go, he can go. If not...I think it's too early to even talk about that." Sumlin declined to go into detail about Gunnell's injury. He landed on his right shoulder after releasing a pass. He was not wearing a sling while watching the remainder of the game from the sideline. "I'm not going to go specifically on where he is right now," Sumlin said. "He wants to play. But...we're going to do the best thing for him and his career." Freshman Will Plummer replaced Gunnell and likely would start against the Buffaloes at Arizona Stadium. - Arizona Star News

  11/29/20 - Dezmon JacksonrSr/2023, Sam Houston, 5-11, 214 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Hard to believe this guy has been sitting at third string this season. With Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown sidelined by injury, Jackson stepped in and stepped up. Big. He rushed for 235 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns. He could've had a fourth but iced the game instead when slid down inside the 5-yard line in the final minute of the game. As impressive as his numbers were, the way he ran was even better. He was patient when he needed to wait on blocks. He was tough when he needed to get to the sticks for a first down. He was speedy when he went around the edge. It's impossible to know when Hubbard and Brown will be healthy again, but Jackson showed he can carry the load in the meantime. - Daily Oklahoman

  11/28/20 - Dezmon JacksonrSr/2023, Sam Houston, 5-11, 214 (DS#60 RB) + More +

Dezmon Jackson rushed for career highs of 235 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 21 Oklahoma State bounced back from a disappointing loss to rival Oklahoma to beat Texas Tech 50-44 on Saturday. Jackson had 36 carries in part because the top two backs, Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown, did not play. The Cowboys still ran for a season-high 317 yards. Hubbard was out with a right ankle injury. The redshirt junior was introduced with the seniors on Senior Day. He walked onto the field during a pregame ceremony wearing his jersey without pads and a medical boot on the injured leg. Brown also has been fighting through injuries. Spencer Sanders passed for 222 yards and ran for 78, and Tylan Wallace caught seven passes for 129 yards and a score for Oklahoma State (6-2, 5-2 Big 12), which remained in the running for a spot in the Big 12 title game.

Alan Bowman passed for 384 yards and three touchdowns, Erik Ezukanma caught seven passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns, and SaRodorick Thompson ran for 133 yards and two scores for Texas Tech. The Red Raiders (3-6, 2-6) gained 639 yards, but Oklahoma State made up for it with a safety, an onside kick return for a touchdown, and an interception return for a score. Texas Tech took a 24-21 lead in the third quarter on a 48-yard pass from Bowman to Ezukanma. The Red Raiders went for an onside kick, but the ball bounced right to Oklahoma State's Jason Taylor, and he ran it back for a touchdown to put the Cowboys ahead again. Later in the quarter, Oklahoma State's Tre Sterling had a 61-yard interception return to put the Cowboys up 34-24. After Tech's Xavier White bounced off a would-be tackler and went 70 yards for a touchdown, Oklahoma State came right back when Wallace hauled in a 27-yard TD pass for a 41-31 lead. In all, five touchdowns were scored during a 5:53 stretch in the third quarter. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football
