Memphis football has been quiet on quarterback Grant Gunnell's transfer to North Texas. On Friday, Tigers quarterback Seth Henigan provided some insight onto Gunnell's departure. Henigan, who started all but one game last season as a true freshman, went on Sports56 on "Mornings with Greg & Eli" and was asked whether Gunnell's decision was surprising. Henigan said the two always chatted about how they were evaluated during spring practice. "We're constantly communicating about what either other of us would do and we could see it. I was getting all the reps basically with the ones (first team) throughout the whole entire spring," Henigan said. "(Grant) made some great plays in the different spring games that we had. He had a great spring game. But in my opinion, he just felt like he knew I was going to be the guy so he was like, all right, I'm going to try and go start somewhere." Henigan, who praised Gunnell as his best friend and mentor, added he believed Gunnell wanted a chance to start given his experience starting two seasons at Arizona before transferring to Memphis in December 2020.

Henigan also understood Gunnell's decision because if he had lost the job, he would have decided to transfer. "For Grant and I both, we've played collegiate football, we've been the guy before, we've started games in college football before," Henigan said. "That film, coaches love that film and they're like 'Oh he's played before so he can play here' and then they come after you. That's the nature of it all now, especially with teams with money and stuff like that. It's just a whole new era of college football with NIL (name, image and likeness)." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

The former Arizona Wildcats quarterback, who sat out last season at Memphis with a leg injury, committed to North Texas after entering the transfer portal this season, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel. Gunnell, a Houston native, set Texas' all-time passing yards and touchdown records at St. Pius X High School, and was one of Arizona's highest-rated commits during the Kevin Sumlin era. Gunnell, a previous Texas A&M commit, also held offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU and Michigan as a four-star prospect in 2019. Gunnell played for the Wildcats from 2019-20, playing eight games as a freshman and starting for the UA in the condensed pandemic-influenced 2020 season. - Arizona Star News

Memphis quarterback Grant Gunnell entered the transfer portal Friday (April 29) just one week after competing in the Tigers' spring game, a source familiar with the decision confirmed to The Commercial Appeal. The source requested anonymity because no official announcement has been made. Gunnell is also no longer listed on the Tigers' roster The news comes as a surprise after Gunnell had a strong performance in the spring game where he threw two touchdown passes on his two opening drives.

Gunnell, a junior, missed last season with a right leg injury that required surgery. But his play in both the spring game and the open scrimmage in Nashville showed why the Tigers re-opened the quarterback battle despite Seth Henigan being named a Freshman All-American after starting every game last season. Gunnell showed no issues with his mobility in either open practice. He led three scoring drives in the Nashville scrimmage, including two touchdown passes. With Gunnell's departure, Henigan likely remains the starter when preseason practice opens in August. The Tigers' only other options include freshman Tevin Carter, who enrolled in January, and junior Hunter Hulsey, who walked on last season. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
