  11/11/21 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

The senior quarterback turned darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate made up for it by doing what he's done so often during his record-breaking season: make something incredibly difficult look incredibly easy. Pickett atoned for a late interception that allowed North Carolina to force overtime by firing a strike through a downpour at soggy Heinz Field to tight end Lucas Krull during the first possession of overtime for an 11-yard score that put the Panthers back in front. Pitt's defense did the rest, harassing Tar Heels star Sam Howell into a desperation fourth-down heave that landed in the outstretched arms of Panthers defensive back M.J. Devonshire to finish off a 30-23 victory. "Listen, everyone's talking about offense," Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said. "You win championships with defense. And that was a championship-level performance." One that kept the Panthers (8-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) in control of the Coastal Division with two games to go.

Pitt will earn its second trip to the ACC title game in four years if it wins out or if it beats Virginia next week and Miami drops any of its final three games. Pickett's 32nd touchdown of the season to Krull finished off a 346-yard performance in which he became the school's all-time leader in yards passing. Pickett slipped past Alex Van Pelt's mark of 11,267 career yards in the first quarter, the latest in a series of records that have fallen during his breakout season. "It's awesome but all the records, awards, accolades, it's really a team effort," Pickett said. "I want to thank my teammates, coaches. It's been a heck of a run, but we're not done yet." - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  11/06/21 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Kenny Pickett threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score as Pittsburgh pulled away to beat Duke 54-29 on Saturday. Pickett threw for 405 yards as the Panthers (7-2, 4-1 Atlantic Coast Conference, No. 25 CFP) bounced back from a home loss to Miami a week earlier. They have their best nine-game record since an 8-1 mark in 2009. Sam Scarton kicked four field goals for Pittsburgh, which leads the ACC's Coastal Division and improved to 4-0 in road games. Jordan Addison, who scored on a reception and a rush, racked up 171 receiving yards on seven catches.

Duke (3-6, 0-5) lost its fifth game in a row. Quarterback Gunnar Holmberg exited with an upper-body injury on the team's final possession of the first half after throwing for 174 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mataeo Durant gained 81 yards on 25 carries. Pittsburgh went ahead for good on Pickett's 22-yard scramble with four minutes left in the first half after an array of potential momentum-turning plays. The Panthers led 30-19 at halftime, with Scarton connecting on his third field goal in an eight-minute span on the final play of the half. Duke drove to the Pittsburgh 1-yard line on the game's opening possession before Durant's fumble and a wild chase for the ball. Pittsburgh responded, going 76 yards in seven plays with Pickett hitting Jared Wayne on a 10-yard scoring pass. Duke scored on its second possession, with Charlie Ham's 46-yard field goal giving the Blue Devils their first first-half points in three games. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  11/05/21 - Phil JurkovecrSr/2024, Pittsburgh, 6-5, 243 (DS#31 QB) + More +

Phil Jurkovec didn't take long to get a big hit in his surprising return to Boston College's starting lineup. After that, coach Jeff Hafley knew his QB would be fine. Jurkovec ran for a touchdown in his return, and the Eagles halted a four-game losing streak with a 17-3 victory over Virginia Tech on Friday night in their annual red bandana game. Jurkovec, who injured his throwing hand in Week 2, was thought to be lost for the season after surgery. He completed just 7-of-13 passes for 112 yards, but gave the Eagles (5-4, 1-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) a spark after the offense sputtered in his absence by recovering a fumble on their first drive and scoring the TD.

Hafley said Jurkovec was cleared to play last Friday. "I called him in and I would have said that's a 50-50 chance with the amount of reps he was going to take," Hafley said. "I didn't want to do anything to jeopardize or get him hurt. We wanted to guide him, and he walked in and said: ‘I'm playing. The 6-foot-5 junior was sent sprawling to the ground on a run on BC's third offensive play. "We wouldn't have let him play if we didn't feel confident about him getting hit and getting hurt," Hefley said. "Maybe part of me (was concerned), but when I saw him bounce up and the look in his eye, we felt good about that." Pat Garwo rushed for 116 yards on 30 carries and a 3-yard score for BC. - Boston College/AP College Football

  11/05/21 - Derek KylerrSr/2023, Pittsburgh, 6-0, 180 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Derek Kyler threw for 193 yards and three touchdowns, Isaiah Johnson returned an interception 73 yards for another score and Dartmouth rocked previously undefeated Princeton 31-7 in the 100th meeting between the Ivy League foes on Friday night. Dartmouth (7-1, 4-1) forced three Princeton punts to open the game and scored 17 points off the changes of possession. Kyler hit a wide-open Paxton Scott with a 37-yard touchdown bomb as Dartmouth marched downfield in eight plays to score on its first series. Kyler, 16-of-19 passing, directed Big Green to a second quick score, flipping a 4-yard pass to Dale Chesson at the back of the end zone. The TD catch was Chesson's first. Connor Davis added a 33-yard field goal as Big Green built a 17-0 early lead.

Princeton put together a 14-play drive with John Volker's carry from the 1-yard line getting the Tigers on the scoreboard, 17-7, with 3:48 left in the half. After forcing a Dartmouth three-and-out, Princeton got the ball back at its own 43 and drove to the Dartmouth 10 on a final possession, but a 27-yard field goal attempt glanced off the back of a Princeton lineman's helmet, deflected and bounced off the right upright as the first half ended. Smith completed 21 of 32 passes for 171 yards but, in addition to the pick-6, was sacked six times, hurried twice and had four passes broken up. - AP College Football

  10/23/21 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett made the most of his Heisman Trophy showcase, throwing for 302 yards and two touchdowns as the 23rd-ranked Panthers topped Clemson 27-17 on Saturday. Pickett completed 25 of 39 passes to overtake Alex Van Pelt for the most career completions in school history. The fifth-year senior ran for two drive-extending dives late in the fourth quarter after the Tigers had drawn within 10. Senior linebacker SirVocea Dennis returned an ill-advised shovel pass by Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei 50 yards for a touchdown early in the third quarter that gave the Panthers a 14-point lead they never really threatened to give away.

Pitt (6-1, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) gained firm control of the ACC's Coastal Division by winning its fourth straight following a stunning home upset loss to Western Michigan last month. Clemson (4-3, 3-2) saw its chances for another Atlantic Division title take a massive hit thanks in large part to an offense that remains very much a problem with Halloween looming. Uiagalelei passed for just 128 yards and two picks and was briefly benched in favor of backup Taisu Phommachanh in the third quarter after his baffling shovel pass hit Dennis right in the middle of the No. 7 on the front of his jersey. Phommachanh failed to provide much of a spark, completing just 3 of 7 passes for 23 yards before Uiagalelei returned in the fourth quarter after Sam Scarton's 43-yard field goal gave the Panthers a 27-10 lead with 9:30 remaining. Uiagalelei did run for a 6-yard score with 7:56 remaining, but Pickett twice used his legs to turn convert on third downs as the Panthers ran out the clock while a giddy Heinz Field crowd celebrated. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

  10/16/21 - Kenny PickettrSr/2022, Pittsburgh, 6-3, 219 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Kenny Pickett threw two touchdown passes and rushed for a score to lead Pittsburgh to a 28-7 victory over Virginia Tech on Saturday. Pickett threw touchdown passes of 8 yards to Gavin Bartholomew and 36 yards to Jared Wayne, and he scored on a 3-yard run - all in the first half - as the Panthers (5-1, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their third straight game. Pittsburgh, which won in Blacksburg for the first time since 2015, moved into sole possession of first place in the ACC's Coastal Division. "I think every game is a statement (game)," Pittsburgh coach Pat Narduzzi said. "We're not worried about the crowd or anything else. Just come out and execute and play Pitt football. That's what we came here to do - play Pitt football. We didn't care who was out there. We didn't care what the scoreboard looked like. Just play Pitt football." Pickett, arguably the leader for ACC Player of the Year at the season's halfway point, now has thrown 21 touchdown passes and just one interception. He completed 22 of 37 for 203 yards. "It feels great," said Pickett, who won for the first time in three starts in Blacksburg. "I had this one circled for sure. We had probably one of the worst offensive performances two years ago (a 28-0 loss). It meant a lot to everyone to come in here and get a win." - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Kenny Pickett passed for 389 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday, and Pittsburgh dominated Georgia Tech 52-21. Pitt (4-1, 1-0 ACC) intercepted the first two passes by Georgia Tech quarterback Jeff Sims, with linebacker John Petrishen returning the second 33 yards for a touchdown to help the Panthers to a 42-14 lead by halftime. Tech (2-3, 1-2) moved the ball effectively on a couple drives in the first half, but failed to convert any of its five third-down tries and misfired on two fourth downs in that time. Pickett was methodical in completing 23-of-36 passes. On the season, he has passed for 19 touchdowns with just one interception, which wasn't made by Georgia Tech. Pitt has scored at least 41 points in each of its five games, the first such streak in program history. The Panthers are averaging 52.4 points per contest.

Pickett left the game with five minutes remaining, and the Panthers running out the clock. Sims returned to a starting role Saturday, and had some success while completing 23-of-32 passes for 342 yards and two scores. The Jackets mustered little on the ground, however, and leading rusher Jahmyr Gibbs carried 10 times for minus-10 yards. Tech rushed for just 73 yards. Eleven Pitt players caught at least one pass and wide receiver Jordan Addison (six receptions, 117 yards, one touchdown) and Taysir Mack (five receptions, 121 yards, one touchdown) had big days. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Nick Howard and Zack Bair combined for 257 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, Derek Kyler threw for two scores and Dartmouth rolled to a 41-3 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday. Howard had 154 yards on nine carries with touchdown runs of 53 and 39 yards in the second half. Bair ran for 103 yards on 11 carries with a 47-yard scamper. Kyler found Paxton Scott for 7 yards to open the scoring and his 9-yard hookup with Jonny Barrett made it 20-0. Kyler completed all 10 of his passes for 106 yards. Dartmouth (2-0) piled up 400 yards, 282 on the ground. The Pioneers (2-2), who got a field goal in the closing seconds of the first half, had 274 yards but couldn't stop the Big Green, which was 6 of 8 on third downs and converted their one attempt on fourth down. - AP College Football

Kenny Pickett threw for 403 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another in just over a half of work and Pittsburgh finished up nonconference play by drilling New Hampshire 77-7 on Saturday. A week after a stunning upset loss at home to Western Michigan, Pitt (3-1) bounced back by pouncing quickly on the overmatched Wildcats (3-1). Pickett led the way, completing 24 of 28 passes while pushing his touchdown pass total to 15 on the season, two more than he had in 2020. Pickett's 1-yard fourth-down scoring plunge gave him 17 career rushing scores, the most ever by a quarterback in school history.

Jordan Addison caught six passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns for Pitt. The Panthers piled up a school-record 707 yards of total offense and scored on 10 of their first 11 drives. Pitt's 77 points were the program's most in a game since 1926 when the Panthers beat Westminster 88-0. New Hampshire, ranked 22nd in the Football Championship Subdivision, saw any hopes of the school's first win over a Power Five program in 15 years evaporate after falling behind by four touchdowns in the game's first 14 minutes. - Pittsburgh/AP College Football

Derek Kyler threw for three touchdowns and Zack Bair ran and caught a score and Dartmouth beat Valparaiso 28-18 on Saturday in the Big Green's season opener. Dartmouth picked up its 11th straight season-opening victory and 17th consecutive non-conference win. Kyler connected with Bair on a 41-yard touchdown pass with 36 seconds left in the first quarter and Dartmouth went ahead 7-5 and never trailed again. Kyler threw a 10-yard scoring pass to Jonny Barrett to end an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took almost six minutes to start the second half for a 21-8 advantage. The Beacons (0-3) closed to within three following their second safety of the contest and Teryn Berry's 14-yard pass to Ollie Reese with 1:16 left in the third. Later, Jalen Mackie intercepted Berry and returned it 28 yards to the Valpo 25. Bair closed it out with a 14-yard run and his 11-yard touchdown run made it 28-18. Robert Washington ran for 117 yards on 24 carries for the Beacons. - AP College Football
