  04/14/20 - Journey BrownrSr/2022, Penn State, 5-11, 215 (DS#999 RB) + More +

It's easy to pencil Journey Brown as Penn State's starting running back next season. The last time he took the field for the Nittany Lions he ran for 202 yards and two touchdowns on only 16 carries in their 53-39 Cotton Bowl win over Memphis to close out 2019. While Brown may have finished last season at the top of the depth chart, run game coordinator and running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider isn't ready to count anyone out of the races for touches. "I think (Brown and Noah Cain) are going to do a great job going forward," Seider said Tuesday morning in a teleconference with the media. "But be cautious. Don't count out Devyn Ford. ... I think he's a kid that you're going to see another whole level of Devyn going forward. ... I view all three of those guys as starters in my mind right now."

The trio of backs rushed for 1,627 yards and should see that number increase for a myriad of reasons. Cain and Ford should see improvement now that they've each and a year in the program, while Brown didn't hit his stride late into the season. "The last four or five games, and I know I'm biased, but I thought Journey Brown was playing as good as any running back in the country," Seider said. "He's got freakish athletic ability and strength that he's finally starting to tap into." Brown has shown the most production of the three backs, racking up 890 rushing yards to lead the team last year. He did so despite being the only back on the roster who was rated as a three-star running back out of high school, with the others ranking as four stars. - Centre Times

  04/05/20 - Cam BrownSr/2020, Penn State, 6-5, 233 (DS#15 OLB) + More +

Cam Brown saw how the NFL was changing when he entered college four years ago. The Penn State linebacker noticed the influence high-powered spread systems had. NFL teams are employing quick, rangy linebackers to contend with more skilled tight ends who line up split wide and running backs who can catch the ball out of the backfield. And that's where Brown thinks he can fit in as he prepares for the 2020 NFL Draft. He feels like he's the same type of player he was when Penn State signed him out of Bullis (Md.) in 2016, and he expects that can translate into the NFL. "I'm athletic, I'm rangy, I can get to the ball, and I can run with tight ends and running backs," Brown said. "I feel like, if anything, my adaption and my body and frame is well-built for these systems of offenses that defenses are going against."

He said his frame has come up in conversations with teams. He has room to bulk up and add weight, and Brown said teams liked that idea. Brown could also fit into the second level of an NFL defense and use his size to help take away the middle of the field from opposing offenses. In his final two seasons at Penn State, Brown broke up 10 passes. "I also have the length, the length on defense," Brown said. "It blocks out windows. It allows you to get to certain plays better than other people can, and honestly, it's an advantage, especially at linebacker when you're sitting in the middle of the field, it's kind of hard for a quarterback to throw over a 6-foot-5 linebacker." - Tribune Review

  03/31/20 - *Yetur Gross-MatosJr/2020, Penn State, 6-5, 266 (DS#2 DE) + More +

The word "adversity" gets thrown around a lot in NFL circles, especially this time of year. Teams want to know whether a draft prospect will stick with things when times get rough. Will he be a unifying force and positive impact on the locker room who helps turn around a losing streak? Or will he point fingers, shift blame and add to the problems? But adversity in the NFL - as important as it is on game day - is trivial. Yetur Gross-Matos has experienced some of the worst of the real-life version, and it motivates the former Penn State star.

When he was 2 years old, Gross-Matos fell into the water during a boating trip, and his biological father died in the act of saving him. Nearly nine years later, his older brother Chelal also died when he was struck by lightning on a baseball field. Teams looking for what Gross-Matos is made of can find all the information they need in his reaction to those two tragedies. "They just asked me about what's the hardest thing I ever went through," he said during last month's NFL Scouting Combine. "Obviously, for me, that was losing my older brother at a young age. And my dad. Just dealing with that. "I want to do something better for my family and my mother, and that's kind of how I approached it. That's the reality of it." - Herald Bulletin

The novel coronavirus has brought the sports world to a halt in the past two weeks. The NCAA canceled its winter championships, the NBA and NHL suspended their seasons, and MLB pushed back the start to its 2020 season. The NFL, however, has trudged forward. Free agency began last week and the 2020 NFL Draft is still slated to take place April 23-25, even though pro days and visits to team offices have been canceled for incoming prospects.

The lack of preparation and opportunity for college players who are pursuing their dreams are part of the reason Penn State head coach James Franklin wants the draft to be pushed back. "I've had a lot of (general managers) calling me about the draft," Franklin said in a teleconference Wednesday afternoon. "Our guys are not able to have a pro day...That's the thing that I would say has probably been challenging and concerning. I wish the NFL would push the draft back to take pressure off all these players, to take pressure off these universities and agents...so (the players) still have the best chance to be evaluated." - Centre Times

Penn State football coach James Franklin is guaranteed at least $38.2 million over the length of a new six-year contract that runs through 2025. The contract was agreed to by Franklin and approved by Penn State's Board of Trustees in December. Terms of the agreement were announced Wednesday. The 48-year-old Franklin will earn $5.4 million next year, plus a retention bonus of $300,000 if he is still coach on Dec. 31. His salary rises every season, topping out at $6.5 million, with a $500,000 retention bonus in 2025. Franklin also is guaranteed a $1 million annual loan toward life insurance. Franklin is 56-23 in six seasons at Penn State, including 34-18 in the Big Ten. The Nittany Lions have gone 11-2 with a New Year's Six Bowl victory in three of the last four seasons. If Franklin leaves Penn State for an NFL or college job during 2020, he would owe the university $5 million. His buyout drops by $1 million each year. - AP College Football

2019 ALL-IVY LEAGUE HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Alex Felkins, Columbia (Fr., K - Tulsa, Okla.),...As a first-year placekicker, Felkins impressed with his range and accuracy in his first year of collegiate competition. After only three games at Columbia, Felkins became the first kicker in school history to convert two 50-yard field goals and is just the fifth kicker in Ivy League history (since 1956) to convert two 50-yard field goals in a career. His 51-yarder at Princeton and 50-yarder at Saint Francis, Pa. were also the two longest field goals in the Ivy League this year.

For the season, Felkins led the Lions in scoring with 49 points, and converted 9-14 field goals and 22-24 point after attempts. He also registered 24 touchbacks in 41 kickoffs as the Lions' kickoff specialist. Among league statistical leaders, Felkins ranked No. 6 in kick scoring (4.9 ppg.), No. 2 in field goals (nine) and No. 7 in PAT kicking percentage (91.7). A high school All-American from Tulsa, Okla. who earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 23 and Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week honors on Oct. 21, Felkins twice was an honorable mention pick for the STATS FCS weekly Special Teams/Rookie of the Week award.   2019 ALL-IVY LEAGUE SECOND TEAM (COACHES): Hunter Nourzad, Cornell (So., OL - Marietta, Ga.),...Nourzad anchored the offensive line with 10 starts at right tackle. Despite having only one returning starter, the line helped Cornell increase its scoring average, total offense and rushing touchdown totals from a season ago. The Big Red allowed one sack or less in five of the team's games. He helped plow the way for an offense that rushed for 263 yards and three touchdowns in a win at Marist and opened holes for teammate Harold Coles' career-best 141-yard performance at Ivy preseason favorite Yale as the Big Red line surrendered just one sack. Nourzad paved the way for 470 yards of offense and 37 points without allowing a sack in the win over Brown. Cornell had four games with more than 400 yards of total offense – including two 200-yard rushing games and five with at least 250 passing yards. - Cornell Football

  12/28/19 - Journey BrownrSr/2022, Penn State, 5-11, 215 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Journey Brown ran for 202 yards with two long touchdowns, Garrett Taylor returned an interception 15 yards for a score after another big play by All-America linebacker Micah Parsons and No. 13 Penn State beat No. 15 Memphis 53-39 on Saturday in the highest-scoring Cotton Bowl ever. While Penn State (11-2, No. 10 CFP) gave up its most points and yards all season against the big-play Group of Five Tigers, Parsons was pulling down quarterback Brady White, who flipped the ball right into the hands of Taylor. That put the Nittany Lions up 45-36 in the final minute of the third quarter. American Athletic Conference champion Memphis (12-2, No. 17 CFP) played its first game under coach Ryan Silverfield. The offensive line coach was promoted when Mike Norvell left after four seasons to become Florida State's coach earlier this month.

White was 32-of-51 passing for 454 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Patrick Taylor Jr. and Kenneth Gainwell both had rushing touchdowns for the Tigers, but the rest of their points came on a Cotton Bowl-record six field goals by Riley Patterson, including a record-long 51-yarder. The Tigers finished with 542 total yards, but White was sacked a season-high six times and didn't throw a touchdown for the first time since the season opener. Two of those sacks were by Parsons, who finished with 14 tackles. Freshman running back Noah Cain added 92 yards and two touchdowns rushing for Penn State, which won for the 30th time in its 50 bowl appearances. The Nittany Lions had 529 total yards. Brown got his 202 rushing yards on 16 carries, including a tackle-shredding 32-yard touchdown early and a 56-yard score when he went up the middle virtually untouched. - AP College Football
