Tanner Brown's fourth field goal gave No. 12 Oklahoma State its first lead and Spencer Sanders' scrambling 10-yard touchdown run with 2:18 to play capped a victory over Texas to keep the Cowboys undefeated. Texas built leads of 17-3 and 24-13 behind three touchdowns from Bijan Robinson before Oklahoma State's defense and punishing run game behind Jaylen Warren took over for the Cowboys (6-0, 3-0 Big 12). Texas (4-3, 2-2) surrendered a big lead in a tough loss for the second straight week. The Longhorns led Oklahoma 28-7 before losing 55-48 last week. Brown's kicking and Jason Taylor II's 85-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter kept the Cowboys' in it while Sanders and the offense were struggling early.

The Cowboys allowed Texas just 317 total yards. Warren finished with 193 yards rushing on 33 carries, pounding out 154 yards in the second half rally. Sanders pulled Oklahoma State to 24-22 with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Presley. Brown's 29-yard field goal put the Cowboys ahead. Texas still had time to possibly retake the lead, but the Cowboys defense stuffed the Longhorns on fourth down at the Texas 42. Sanders scored two plays later and Oklahoma State then sealed the victory with Tanner McAlister's interception with 1:57 to play. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

His 130 all-purpose yards marked the most for any player in the game, as he has now led the Cowboys in all-purpose yards in three straight outings. The senior RB scored a touchdown on a fourth-down rush with 2:10 remaining in the game to seal the Cowboys' win. He has at least one rushing touchdown in four of OSU's five games this year. - Big 12 football

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy is trying to wrap his mind around these low-scoring games in what once was the wide-open Big 12. The transition has been easier for him because his Cowboys are winning. No. 19 Oklahoma State held No. 21 Baylor to 280 total yards and beat the Bears 24-14 on Saturday in a matchup of Big 12 teams that entered the night unbeaten. Such defensive performances are becoming the norm for the Cowboys - they haven't allowed more than 23 points in a game this season. "Obviously, the defense playing good," Gundy said. "I just don't want to jinx them. They just keep playing, good. I hope that they just continue on like that." The offense did just enough.

Jaylen Warren ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns and Tay Martin caught seven passes for 108 yards for the Cowboys (5-0, 2-0). Oklahoma State's Spencer Sanders passed for 182 yards and a touchdown and ran for 76 yards, but he helped Baylor stay in the game by throwing three interceptions. "We've got to play better at that position than he did tonight when it comes to turning the ball over," Gundy said. "He's a dangerous player. But no, we can't miminize those mistakes." Abram Smith rushed for 97 yards and a touchdown for Baylor (4-1, 2-1). The Bears, who were coming off a win over Iowa State, missed a chance to beat ranked teams in consecutive weeks for the first time since 1974. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

SEPT 27 BIG 12 CO-DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Malcolm Rodriguez, Oklahoma State, LB, Sr.,...Rodriguez recovered a fumble and scored a touchdown in the first quarter of OSU's 31-20 win over No. 25 Kansas State. He finished with seven tackles to mark his ninth consecutive game with at least seven. He has led the OSU defense in solo stops every game this season, including his six against K-State. The senior LB was also credited with a tackle for loss and a pair of quarterback hurries. - Big 12 Football

SEPT 20 BIG 12 OFFENSIVE PLAYER & NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Jaylen Warren, Oklahoma State, RB, Sr.,...Making his first start as a Cowboy, Warren carried the ball 32 times for 218 yards and two touchdowns in OSU's 21-20 win at Boise State. His totals for carries and rushing yards were both career highs and both numbers marked the most for a player in any game involving a Big 12 team this season. Warren broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was OSU's longest rushing play since Chuba Hubbard scored on a 92-yard rush against TCU in 2019, and tied for the second-longest play from scrimmage in the Big 12 this season. It was the second-longest of Warren's career and also marked his fourth consecutive game with a rushing touchdown. The senior had 150 rushing yards at halftime, the most for a Cowboy in a half since Hubbard rushed for 192 in the second half against TCU in 2019. - Big 12 football

SEPT 20 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jason Taylor II, Oklahoma State, FS, Jr.,...With OSU leading 21-20 and only 2:09 remaining in the game, Taylor blocked a 36-yard Boise State field goal attempt to preserve the one-point win for the Cowboys. Prior to the block, BSU kicker Jonah Dalmas had missed only one field goal attempt in his career. It was OSU's second blocked kick of the season and its 27th since 2013, ranking as the second-most in the FBS during that time frame. Taylor also contributed with four total tackles, including three solo stops, and added a quarterback hurry. It was the latest in a long line of game-changing plays for Taylor, who also has an onside kick return for a touchdown and fumble return for a touchdown in his career. - Big 12 football

Jaylen Warren rushed for 218 yards and two touchdowns, Oklahoma State pitched a second-half shutout and the Cowboys escaped with a 21-20 victory over Boise State on Saturday night. Boise State had a chance to steal the win after a turnover late in the game, but Jason Taylor got a fingertip on Jonah Dalmas' 36-yard field goal attempt, pushing the ball wide left with 2:05 remaining. Oklahoma State (3-0) leaned on its rushing attack to grind out the win, throwing the ball just 13 times. However, none was bigger than Spencer Sanders' 24-yard completion to Cale Cabbiness to ice the win in the waning minutes of the game. "I told the team after the game that because of the way that we have to play football right now, we're learning how to play as a team," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "I thought our coaches made really good adjustments at halftime, particularly defensively on a couple of things." Gundy's assessment came across as modest, considering his defense held Boise State to 64 total yards in the second half.

Boise State (1-2) hasn't lost two games this early in a season since 2005 when the Broncos started 0-2. "We have to be more consistent," Boise State coach Andy Avalos said. "Obviously the way we finished the first half wasn't exactly stellar. We didn't finish the half the way we are capable of." After Boise State raced to a 10-0 lead, Warren put the hostile home crowd on notice when he broke two tackles and outran the rest of the Boise State defense for a 75-yard touchdown run with 4:59 left in the first quarter. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Eight of his tackles were solo stops. He made tackles on five of Tulsa's first eight plays of the game. The senior LB ranks No. 1 among FBS players with an average of 14 tackles per game this season and is also the national leader with 8.5 solo tackles per game. - Big 12 Football

SEPT 13 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: LD Brown, Oklahoma State, RB/KR, Sr.,...Brown's 98-yard kickoff return against Tulsa tied for the seventh-longest in school history, and was the longest since Tyreek Hill returned one 99 yards for a score at Kansas in 2014. The play came with OSU trailing by three points in the fourth quarter and put the Cowboys on top for good. Brown led all players in the game with 141 all-purpose yards.   Jaylen Warren shed three tackles to punch in an 11-yard touchdown run that gave Oklahoma State enough insurance to beat Tulsa 28-23 on Saturday. The Cowboys trailed 14-7 entering the fourth quarter, but took control of the nonconference game with a Spencer Sanders touchdown throw, LD Brown's 98-yard kickoff return for a score and Warren's late run. Oklahoma State's defense helped it avoid a rare loss to its Turnpike Classic rival, limiting the Golden Hurricane offense to four third-down conversions on 13 attempts and 17 points. "I was proud of our defense for continuing to put us in a great situation," Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. "… They continue to play well, as we try to grow up a little bit on offense and get some young players developed and kind of work through a few things." Tulsa, which fell to FCS program UC Davis last week, looked poised to beat Oklahoma State for the first time since 1998 and win its first game in Stillwater since 1951.

The Golden Hurricane forced a 7-7 tie at halftime, courtesy Justin Wright's 55-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Tulsa couldn't overcome the Cowboys' fourth-quarter explosion, even after adding a touchdown with 3:06 to play. OSU recovered an on-side kick and ran out the clock. Similar to its narrow victory over Missouri State last Saturday, Oklahoma State's offense struggled to find its footing, even with its starting quarterback back in the lineup. Sanders, who missed the team's season opener, finished with 173 passing yards on 15-of-26 passing to go with two touchdowns and an interception. "I think everybody in this building is going to tell me I played good," Sanders said, "but I'm gonna honest with myself, I got to play better." - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy ran down a list of some true freshmen who could potentially play significant roles for the Cowboys this season. Some were expected, like the quartet of young receivers - twins Blaine and Bryson Green, Jaden Bray and John Paul Richardson - at a position that lacks a lot of veteran depth. Defensive end isn't one of those positions, but Gundy says true freshman Collin Oliver out of Edmond Santa Fe is likely to be in the rotation, despite having players like Trace Ford, Brock Martin and Tyren Irby ahead of him on the depth chart. "Collin's gonna play," Gundy said. "How much? It's based on a lot of different things, the packages we use. But I feel like he's gonna be in the game playing."

Martin, a senior who has been a strong guiding presence for young players during his career, sees great potential in Oliver, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds. "You've got the new guy, Collin Oliver, who I think will probably be an All-American by the end of his career," Martin said. "He's just a freak athlete. He's strong in the weight room. He really takes this stuff serious. He asks questions, and he's got a lot of help." Oliver, who was No. 3 in The Oklahoman's final Super 30 rankings for the 2020 class, had 66 tackles with four sacks last season at Edmond Santa Fe. - Daily Oklahoman

Last season, the right side of the Oklahoma State offensive line was hit hardest by injuries. Cole Birmingham and Hunter Anthony, the starters at right guard and right tackle, respectively, were out for the season before halftime of the first game. But last year's pain is this year's gain. The right side of the offensive line is stacked with experienced players who the Cowboy coaches already know they can trust in game situations.

Anchoring the right side is tackle Jake Springfield, who started most of the season at left tackle a year ago. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound sophomore and former walk-on was thrown into the fire when Anthony was injured. That triggered the first "musical chairs" moment of the year, with Teven Jenkins shifting from left to right tackle, and Springfield entering on the left. Now, Springfield has shifted to the right side, where he feels more comfortable. And he has gotten some tips from Jenkins, his close friend who is now with the Chicago Bears. "We've been talking," Springfield said. "I'm trying to just be like him. But it feels a lot better being on the right side. I'm more confident." - Daily Oklahoman

The key to a quarterback/center relationship starts with a good snap. New Oklahoma State center Danny Godlevske wants that relationship to be perfect. "He talks to me after every series, 'Are my snaps good?'" Cowboy quarterback Spencer Sanders said of Godlevske. "He's making sure his snaps are good every time. "I feel like our chemistry is good. He knows he can talk to me anytime. We've built a bond not just as teammates, but a brotherhood." Godlevske gelled with his fellow offensive linemen quickly as well after transferring from Miami of Ohio in January. A sixth-year senior, taking advantage of the additional year of eligibility afforded players last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Godlevske brought a veteran mentality and plenty of experience to the center position.

With his addition, four of the five projected starters on the OSU offensive line will have started multiple Division I games. Godlevske's experience allowed him to learn the Cowboy offense quickly, which was key in a critical position where making pre-snap calls for blocking schemes is necessary. "From spring ball, you saw that he had a work ethic like no other," starting left guard Josh Sills said. "Coming from Miami of Ohio, not being at a Power 5 school, I've heard him mention it to me quite a few times that he feels like he needs to prove himself. "As far as gelling with us, it's been great. He picked up the offense super-quick, knows all the calls. When we go turbo, he's the first one at the ball, makes the call, gets set, and everybody goes off of him. "With his football knowledge and experience that he has… he's getting himself in the best possible position to make our team successful." - Daily Oklahoman

One of the highest-rated players in Arkansas' 2021 recruiting class is adjusting to college football like many hoped he would. A former 4-star recruit from powerhouse Tulsa Union, running back AJ Green has already made a strong impression on his coaches and teammates just four days into preseason practice. For some newcomers, it can take time to shake off early nerves. Grasping concepts and truly showcasing ability isn't always instantaneous, either. But Green, by all accounts, doesn't fall into that category. "He's got a calmness about himself for being a freshman," Arkansas running backs coach Jimmy Smith said Monday. "You'll find that he's just always calm. Nothing rattles him. For three days, I haven't seen him rattled by any situation. "He just keeps playing and keeps it going. That's a big deal." Green, 5-11, 200 pounds, is among a host of running backs pushing to become the Razorbacks' No. 2 option behind Trelon Smith, a redshirt junior who made the most of his extended playing time following Rakeem Boyd's opt out in 2020. - Northwest Arkansas Times
