  07/19/19 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

The arrival of Justin Fields at Ohio State this year generated a flurry of excitement among the team's fan base. Fields had been a top-ranked quarterback recruit in high school before transferring after one season at Georgia. But Ryan Day, the Buckeyes' first-year coach, has yet to bestow the starting job on Fields. "One of our core philosophies is that you just don't get given a starting position," Day said. "You have to earn everything you get around here. He hasn't done that." Day has reiterated for months a desire to keep Fields in a quarterback competition that will extend into preseason camp. He took the same position Thursday when he spoke with reporters at Big Ten media days.

If there is a moment on the horizon for Fields to emerge atop the depth chart, it will come next month after a couple of weeks of camp. Day said that was the ideal time frame to settle on a starter. Otherwise, Day seemed more interested in downplaying expectations for the much-discussed transfer. "The hard thing for everybody to realize is he's coming off the heels of Dwayne Haskins," Day said, referring to the Buckeyes' former record-setting passer. "So I think a lot of people think Dwayne went from 0 to 60 so fast, he just jumped into the Heisman Trophy race. That was a very different scenario than Justin Fields." - Columbus Dispatch

The Big Ten Conference announced its 2019 football preseason honors on Thursday in conjunction with the start of Big Ten Media Days at the Hilton Chicago. A media panel selected the 10-member preseason list, with five representatives each from the East and West Divisions. Michigan State and Ohio State each placed two honorees on the East Division team, with Buckeye junior running back J.K. Dobbins earning Big Ten football preseason accolades for the second consecutive season. He is joined on this year's preseason East Division squad by his OSU classmate, defensive end Chase Young, as well as a pair of MSU seniors in linebacker Joe Bachie and defensive end Kenny Willekes, with Penn State junior defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos completing the East Division side.

Five different schools placed students on the West Division preseason list, led by Northwestern junior linebacker Paddy Fisher and Wisconsin junior running back Jonathan Taylor, both of whom garnered Big Ten preseason football honors for the second year in a row. Iowa junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa, Nebraska sophomore quarterback Adrian Martinez and Purdue sophomore wide receiver/return specialist Rondale Moore rounded out this year’s West Division honorees. - Big Ten Football

  06/18/19 - Justin Hilliard, rSr/2021, Ohio State, 6-1, 229 (DS#31 OLB) + More +

After Ohio State linebacker Justin Hilliard felt soreness in his Achilles tendon early in spring practice in March, he asked Tuf Borland for his perspective. Borland, also a linebacker, had suffered a ruptured Achilles the previous year. "He described it as someone smacking you with a bat in your calf," Hilliard said. Then, during a pass-rushing drill in a subsequent practice, Hilliard had the same feeling. While being blocked by running back J.K. Dobbins, he felt a nudge in his calf. It was sudden enough that he thought for a moment that he had been kicked by running backs coach Tony Alford, who was overseeing the drill.

As with Borland, Hilliard had suffered a torn Achilles. The injury cost the senior the rest of spring practice. Less than two months from preseason camp, Hilliard provided an update on his recovery while speaking at a job fair for Ohio State football players, an initiative that began under former coach Urban Meyer. In recent weeks, Hilliard said he had spent time jogging underwater and hoped to soon jog outside on a hard surface, followed by running in the next couple of months. "If I keep progressing on the trajectory I'm on," Hilliard said, "I feel confident that I'll be back at some point in camp." - Columbus Dispatch
