  11/08/19 - *Chase Young, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 6-5, 264 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Ohio State star defensive end Chase Young won't play Saturday against Maryland because of a possible NCAA "issue" in 2018. The surprising news was announced by the school with team's status report and depth chart for the coming game. The statement says Young is being held out because of a "possible NCAA issue from last year" the athletic department is "looking into." The school did not elaborate on what Young may have done or say for how long he might be out. Young leads the nation in sacks with 13.5 after a dominant performance two weeks ago against Wisconsin that thrust him into the Heisman Trophy race. The junior was a preseason AP All-American and is projected to be one of the first players taken in next year's NFL draft.

The third-ranked Buckeyes were No. 1 in this week's initial College Football Playoff rankings. They were off last week and face Rutgers next week before finishing the season against No. 5 Penn State and No. 14 Michigan. The Buckeyes are 42-point favorites against Maryland and will be favored by even more against Rutgers, even without Young. Their final two games, however, will have Big Ten and national championship implications. Young is a former five-star recruit from Maryland. He has been one of the best players in the country, regardless of position, this season, anchoring an Ohio State defense that leads the nation in yards per play (3.59). - AP College Football

Two from the Big Ten. Two from the Southeastern Conference. And the undefeated defending national champions on the outside looking in - for now. Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State were the top four teams Tuesday night in the College Football Playoff selection committee's first rankings of the season. Next up was Clemson, winner of two of the last three playoffs, followed by Georgia and Oregon. The 13-member committee will produce four more weekly top 25s before the only ones that really count come out on selection Sunday, Dec. 8.

The semifinals will be held this season at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, and the Peach Bowl in Atlanta on Dec. 28. The national championship game is Jan. 13 in New Orleans. The top four in the selection committee's initial rankings have never all reached the semifinals in the playoff's five-year history. Eleven of the 20 teams that started in the top four of the CFP rankings have reached the playoff, but, oddly, never the team ranked third. Utah was eighth and Oklahoma, the highest-ranked team from the Big 12, was ninth. Florida gave the SEC four of the top 10 teams. Another SEC team, Auburn, was 11th, followed by Baylor, one of the country's surprising unbeaten teams. - AP College Football

  10/30/19 - *J.K. Dobbins, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 5-09, 209 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Ohio State's J.K. Dobbins is backing up his preseason declaration that he's the best college running back in the nation. Dobbin's 163 yards against then-No. 13 Wisconsin and its top-ranked defense last week put him over 1,000 yards. He's the first Ohio State back to hit the 1,000-yard mark in each of his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. That's the territory of Archie Griffin, college football's only two-time Heisman Trophy winner. The Ohio State star ran for over 1,000 yards in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. Dobbins leads a balanced offense that many believe is the most complete Ohio State team in years. The No. 3 Buckeyes swept away Wisconsin 38-7 on what is looking like an inevitable march to the College Football Playoff.

Dobbins' numbers could be gaudier. He sat in the latter parts of blowouts - and all eight Ohio State wins ended up blowouts. Second-stringer Master Teague has gotten so much late playing time that he's already piled up 588 yards on 86 carries. In practices before last week's game, Dobbins' teammates ribbed him about the Heisman hype that was following Wisconsin back Jonathan Taylor to Columbus. The Badgers star was widely considered the nation's best back. Dobbins responded with 163 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 58 yards -- a total of 221 all-purpose yards -- earning him Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors. "I know that was fueling him a lot," Ohio State guard Wyatt Davis said. "I still didn't understand why J.K. didn't have as much hype as he did. We were all just saying this is your time to prove it." - AP College Football

J.K. Dobbins rushed for 163 yards and two touchdowns, Chase Young was nearly unblockable with four sacks and No. 3 Ohio State routed No. 13 Wisconsin 38-7 on Saturday. Dobbins slashed Wisconsin's top-ranked defense for long gains in the second half, including scoring runs of 9 and 14 yards in a game played from beginning to end in the driving rain. He outperformed Badgers Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor, who could muster only 52 yards rushing against the Buckeyes (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) after averaging almost 137 per game coming in. Young looked like the Heisman contender on his day, tying a school record for sacks in a game, including two strip sacks that led to fumbles recovered each time by linebacker Pete Werner.

Justin Fields was harassed and sacked five times but - as he has been all season - was masterful at extending plays at critical times for the Buckeyes. He finished 12 for 22 for 167 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for a score. Chris Olave caught two touchdowns passes and had seven catches for 93 yards. Wisconsin (6-2, 3-2) scored on a 26-yard touchdown pass from Coan to A.J. Taylor early in the second half after the Badgers blocked an Ohio State punt and started with a short field. That made it 10-7, but Ohio State immediately answered with a touchdown drive and was never threatened again. Ohio State has outscored opponents 386-63 and hasn't played a close game yet. - AP College Football

Ohio State edged past Clemson to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll and Wisconsin dropped to 13th after being upset ahead of its showdown with the Buckeyes. Alabama remained No. 1 on Sunday in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank, receiving 24 first-place votes. No. 2 LSU held its place and received 16 first-place votes. The Buckeyes had 13 first-place votes and No. 4 Clemson, the preseason No. 1 team and defending national champion, received nine. The Buckeyes and Tigers both were coming off conference blowouts on the road. Ohio State beat Northwestern 52-3 Friday night. Clemson defeated Louisville 45-10.

The point margin between the No. 1 and No. 4 in this week's Top 25 is 78, the smallest it has been this season. Alabama received 1,486 points while LSU had 1,462, Ohio State had 1,429 and Clemson had 1,408. Oklahoma remained No. 5, but Penn State moved up to sixth after Wisconsin's first loss of the season. The Badgers were beaten Saturday by 30-point underdog Illinois in the season's most significant upset so far. Florida, Notre Dame, Auburn and Georgia round out the top 10, giving the Southeastern Conference five of the top 10 teams. - AP College Football

Eyeing a playoff spot and a shot at the national championship, No. 4 Ohio State sure is locked in at the moment. Justin Fields threw for four touchdowns, J.K. Dobbins rushed for 121 yards and the Buckeyes pounded Northwestern 52-3 on Friday night. Ohio State (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) did exactly as expected and blew the game open early, jumping to a 31-3 halftime lead. “I just feel like it's business,” defensive end Chase Young said. “That's the mentality I have, just because I know we can't have any fluke losses. It's gonna mess with what we want to do.”

Fields completed 18 of 23 passes for 194 yards. The sophomore transfer from Georgia matched his career high for TDs through the air. He now has 22 passing and 30 overall on the season. The nation's second-leading rusher, Dobbins scored from the 5 in the second quarter after breaking off a 67-yard run. He also caught a 19-yard touchdown pass in the first half. The junior now has 947 yards rushing after finishing with more than 1,000 in each of his first two seasons. Chris Olave caught two TDs. Blake Haubeil kicked a 55-yard field goal that tied the second-longest in the history of the storied program. The Buckeyes racked up 480 yards while holding the Northwestern to 199 and remained unbeaten heading into their showdown at home with No. 6 Wisconsin next week. - Ohio State/AP College Football

First-year starter Josh Myers has stepped into a spot held down last year by Michael Jordan, who was drafted in the fourth round by the Bengals. Myers has not let the play in the middle of the Buckeyes' line slip one bit. "Myers was exceptional in helping the OSU line provide movement at the point of attack as well as finding defenders on the second level against Michigan State," Cubelic said. "His power and ability to finish blocks sets him apart from other collegiate centers." - AP College Football

Ohio State and Georgia are tied at No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Florida surged to No. 7 after a big victory. No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson held their spots Sunday after a week off for both, but the Buckeyes caught up to the Bulldogs in the AP Top 25 presented by Regions Bank. The Crimson Tide received 32 first-place votes and 1,503 points and the Tigers had 15 first-place votes and 1,433 points. Georgia got three first-place votes and 1,393 points.

Ohio State, which was fourth last week, received 10 first-place votes and 1,393 points. The last time there was a tie in the top three was Sept. 20, 2015, when TCU and Mississippi shared third. No. 5 LSU received two first-place votes. Oklahoma stayed No. 6. Florida moved up three spots after beating Auburn on Saturday. The Tigers slipped five to No. 12. Baylor, Memphis and Cincinnati all entered the Top 25. - AP College Football

Justin Fields threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, J.K. Dobbins rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown and No. 4 Ohio State overcame a sluggish start to roll over No. 25 Michigan State 34-10 on Saturday night. The Buckeyes (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten) had to work to figure out Michigan State's defense to start, after blowing out every opponent through the first five games. They gained just 16 yards on 16 plays in the first quarter, but got unstuck and put away the Spartans (4-2, 2-1) with big plays.

Dobbins ran the ball 24 times, averaged over 7 yards per carry and had an electrifying 67-yard breakaway for a touchdown late in the first half. Fields finished 17 for 25 for 206 yards and threw an interception for the first time in his first 175 pass attempts as a Buckeye. He also was sacked three times - twice by Michigan State linebacker Joe Bachie. Brian Lewerke was 20 for 38 for 218 yards and a touchdown for the Spartans. - Ohio State/AP College Football

The Buckeyes No. 1 tailback has been nearly unstoppable and could have gaudier numbers if not for giving way to backups in blowouts, which every Ohio State victory has been. After running for 177 yards against Nebraska last week, he has 654 yards and five touchdowns in five games. He's averaging over seven yards per carry. - AP College Football

Michigan State's defense is one of the best in the country, but the unit may have difficulty containing quarterback Justin Fields and a Buckeyes offense that is surging, coming off a 48-7 dismantling of Nebraska. Fields has accounted for 23 touchdowns...16 passing, seven running...and his 138 points responsible for is second in the nation. Michigan State has the fourth-best running defense in the country and is limiting opponents to an average of 15 points per game. The unit has caused 10 turnovers and has a Big Ten-leading six interceptions. - AP College Football

  10/01/19 - *Jeffrey Okudah, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 6-1, 205 (DS#1 CB) + More +

Jeffrey Okudah already was on the radar of NFL scouts as he began his second season as a starting cornerback for Ohio State. Most observers agreed he was a good-sized, tough, fast pass defender - even with a big fat zero on his career stat line for interceptions. Suddenly, he has three picks in the last two weeks - two in a prime-time Saturday night win over Nebraska - and his profile and NFL stock are rising. The junior from Texas acknowledged that the first interception - which came in his 31st game and was overshadowed by the Buckeyes' offensive onslaught in a 76-5 rout of Miami (Ohio) - helped to "kind of get a monkey off my back."

"I think it did give me some confidence to show myself I could do it," he said. "Then coming out and following up with a pretty good performance, I think that speaks to the confidence I came into the game with." Last Saturday, he broke in front of Wan'Dale Robinson on Nebraska's first possession for his first pick. Two Husker possessions later, Okudah grabbed a tipped ball out of the air while lying flat on his back. "Sometimes you've got to thank the football gods," he said. Coach Ryan Day said Okudah has thrived in the new defensive scheme installed by co-coordinators Greg Mattison and Jeff Hafley. Hafley believes Okudah, a former five-star recruit, has improved with experience and has learned to practice harder and prepare better for the No. 4 Buckeyes. "He's spending a lot of time listening to the 'why,'" Hafley said. "Like he's starting to understand why certain (pass) routes are coming. So I think he's seeing the game a little bit different, and that slows it down for him. Mentally, I think he's becoming a better football player." - AP College Football
