  11/23/19 - *J.K. Dobbins, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 5-09, 209 (DS#1 RB) + More +

J.K. Dobbins rushed for 157 yards and two touchdowns and No. 2 Ohio State locked up the Big Ten East title Saturday, surviving its first real test of the season with a 28-17 victory over No. 9 Penn State. The Buckeyes held on after Penn State (9-2, 7-2 Big Ten) took advantage of two second-half turnovers to climb back into the game in the third quarter after trailing 21-0. This was a far different scenario for Ohio State, which blew out its first 10 opponents. "From the beginning to the end, you couldn't take a deep breath at all," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. The Buckeyes (10-0, 8-0 Big Ten) were clinging to a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter when Justin Fields threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Chris Olave to create some space.

The Ohio State defense, with Chase Young back from a two-game suspension, then shut down two late Penn State drives on fourth down. The last drive included back-to-back sacks of backup quarterback Will Levis by Young and linebacker Baron Browning. Fields fumbled away the ball twice, once as he was crossing the goal line for an apparent touchdown. But he got critical yards on the ground, rushing for 68 yards on 21 carries and threw beautiful second half touchdown passes to K.J. Hill and Olave. "The biggest difference was the quarterback's legs, the running game," Penn State coach James Franklin said. Dobbins was responsible for both first-half touchdowns, a 4-yard plunge in the first quarter and a 2-yard plunge on fourth-and-goal with 2 minutes left in the half. He finished the first half with 89 rushing yards. With three sacks, Young now has 16.5 for the season. - Ohio State/AP College Football

Ohio State says senior defensive end Jonathon Cooper will seek another year of eligibility because of an ankle injury that limited his playing time this season. The senior captain missed the first four games because of the injury, which required surgery. He has played in just three games. He could play in one more game this season and still pursue the extra year of eligibility. Cooper had been expected to start opposite preseason All-American Chase Young. He was coming off a 2018 season in which he made 25 tackles and earned honorable mention all-conference honors. - AP College Football

With its 56-21 win at Rutgers, second-ranked Ohio State became the second team in 100 years to win its first 10 games by 24 or more points. The other team with that distinction was Nebraska in 1971. The Cornhuskers' streak ended in the 11th game, the 35-31 Game of the Century win at Oklahoma. Ohio State plays what figures to be its toughest game to date this week at home against No. 9 Penn State. - AP College Football

  11/16/19 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Justin Fields threw for a career-high 305 yards and matched his best with four touchdown passes to lead No. 2 Ohio State to a workmanlike 56-21 win over Rutgers on Saturday. Favored by a whopping 51 points, the Buckeyes (10-0, 7-0 Big Ten) rolled to their 16th straight win over the past two seasons. J.K. Dobbins ran for two touchdowns and cornerback Shaun Wade set up two early TDs with an interception and a forced fumble. Isaih Pacheco scored on a 26-yard run, Johnny Langan threw a 45-yard scoring pass to Bo Melton and ran a yard for another touchdown with 1:09 left for Rutgers (2-8, 0-7). The loss was the 19th straight conference game for Rutgers, which fired coach Chris Ash in late September.

Playing just over a half, Fields finished 15 of 19 in topping his previous best of 234 yards against Florida Atlantic in the season opener. His touchdown passes covered 11 and 24 yards to Binjimen Victor, 35 yards to K.J. Hill and 14 yards to Luke Farrell on the opening series of the second half. The Georgia transfer has thrown 31 touchdowns and one interception in his first season as the Buckeyes' starter. Rutgers took the opening kickoff and turned the ball over twice in his first four plays from scrimmage, helping stake Ohio State to a 14-0 lead. Wade intercepted Langan (12 of 26 for 121) on the second play from scrimmage, giving the Buckeyes the ball at their 40. Four plays later, Dobbins scored on an 18-yard run. - Ohio State/AP College Football

  11/13/19 - *Chase Young, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 6-5, 264 (DS#1 DE) + More +

Ohio State star defensive end Chase Young will be held out of one more game as punishment for breaking NCAA rules by accepting a personal loan. The penalty was announced by Ohio State in a statement Wednesday. The school had sought immediate reinstatement from the NCAA. The situation worked out as well as it could have for the second-ranked Buckeyes. Young, a preseason All-American and the nation's leader in sacks, was held of the 73-14 rout of Maryland last week and will miss Saturday's game against 50-point underdog Rutgers. He'll return for showdowns with No. 9 Penn State and No. 14 Michigan to end the regular season.

Ohio State announced the day before its game with Maryland that Young would be held out amid concerns he violated NCAA rules by taking a loan last year from someone he describes as a "family friend" for living expenses. Young explained his "mistake" in a tweet and said the loan had been paid back. "This is the example of the culture of compliance we have at Ohio State," athletic director Gene Smith said Wednesday. "I also want to commend Chase Young and let him know how proud we are of him," Smith said. "He took responsibility for his actions, cooperated throughout the process and understood and accepted that there would be consequences." - AP College Football

  11/09/19 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Ohio State got its first taste of adversity this week when star defensive end Chase Young was suspended for the Maryland game for a possible NCAA infraction involving a personal loan. On Saturday the No. 3 Buckeyes set that to one side and took out their frustrations on beleaguered Maryland, a program heading in the wrong direction. Justin Fields threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the first half Saturday as Ohio State rolled to a 73-14 win behind 705 yards of offense and 40 first downs. A team that gave the Buckeyes (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten, CFP No. 1) headaches last season was no trouble this time, even without the fierce pass-rushing of Young. The preseason All-American was suspended Friday while Ohio State investigates a possible NCAA violation involving a loan.

"We went through a little adversity this week," coach Ryan Day said. "Adversity reveals character, and our character was at the forefront of this game. I felt we came out and showed we're made of something special here." J.K. Dobbins rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns as the Buckeyes built a 42-0 halftime lead and the backups added to it in the second half. Fields tossed touchdown passes to Binjimen Victor , K.J. Hill and Chris Olave before taking a seat. His backup, Chris Chugunov, threw another one in the third quarter. The Buckeyes defense, without Young, held the Terrapins to a single yard of offense in the first quarter and 139 yards for the game. - Ohio State/AP College Football

  11/08/19 - *Chase Young, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 6-5, 264 (DS#1 DE) + More +

No. 3 Ohio State announced Friday it will not play star defensive end Chase Young against Maryland this weekend amid concerns he violated NCAA rules by taking a loan last year from someone he describes as a "family friend." The surprising move was disclosed in the team's status report and depth chart for Saturday's game. Ohio State said only that Young was being held out because of a "possible NCAA issue from last year" the athletic department is "looking into." The school did not elaborate or say how long he might be out. Young, however, took to Twitter a short time later.

"I made a mistake last year by accepting a loan from a family friend I've known since the summer before my freshman year at OSU," he wrote on his verified Twitter account Friday morning. "I repaid it in full last summer and I'm working with the University and NCAA to get back on the field as soon as possible." Tim Nevius, an attorney and former NCAA investigator, confirmed he is working with Young. He tweeted that Young "took a small loan from a close family friend last year to cover basic life expenses. Loan was repaid months ago and we're working to restore his eligibility." The suspension has been the first hint of off-field trouble or any significant adversity for the Buckeyes, who are ranked No. 1 in the current playoff rankings with legitimate hopes for a national championship in coach Ryan Day's first season in charge. - AP College Football
