The Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame (OSHOF) and Jim Thorpe Association release today the prestigious Paycom Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list. This list includes 49 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing 10 conferences. The preseason watch list is selected by a screening committee whose members compile a list of up to 50 players. This list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons may be added as the season progresses.

A preseason watch list is compiled by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame based on previous performance and preseason All-America lists. A screening committee, consisting of OSHOF members, monitor the watch list players and narrow the field to 10 to 15 semifinalists on the first Monday of November. This committee reconvenes on the Monday before Thanksgiving to select three award finalists. The three finalists are submitted to a national panel of over 250 sports writers, sportscasters, former players and coaches who vote to determine the winner of the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award. - Paycom Jim Thorpe Award

  07/14/20 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Ohio State football's Justin Fields should be in a season-long conversation for the title of nation's best quarterback. The season-opening watch list for the Davey O'Brien Award - given annually to the nation's top quarterback - included the Buckeyes' Heisman Trophy finalist. Fields threw for 3,273 yards with 41 touchdowns against three interceptions last season and also rushed for 484 yards and 10 touchdowns. Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, the player Fields is most widely compared to in the battle for the nation's best, also made the watch list. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  07/08/20 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

We are facing uncertain and unprecedented times, and the health, safety and wellness of our student-athletes, coaches, game officials, and others associated with our sports programs and campuses remain our number one priority. To that end, the Big Ten Conference announced today that if the Conference is able to participate in fall sports (men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, and women's volleyball) based on medical advice, it will move to Conference-only schedules in those sports. Details for these sports will be released at a later date, while decisions on sports not listed above will continue to be evaluated.

By limiting competition to other Big Ten institutions, the Conference will have the greatest flexibility to adjust its own operations throughout the season and make quick decisions in real-time based on the most current evolving medical advice and the fluid nature of the pandemic. This decision was made following many thoughtful conversations over several months between the Big Ten Council of Presidents and Chancellors, Directors of Athletics, Conference Office staff, and medical experts including the Big Ten Task Force for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Big Ten Sports Medicine Committee. - Big Ten Football

  07/02/20 - *Garrett Wilson, Jr/2022, Ohio State, 6-0, 184 (DS#1 WR) + More +

Garrett Wilson is moving into the slot in his second year as an Ohio State football wide receiver. He spent his freshman season rotating with Binjimen Victor outside, where he caught 30 passes for 432 yards and five touchdowns. Wide receiver coach Brian Hartline stated that he always envisioned Wilson's skill set as a match for the slot. With K.J. Hill gone, the opportunity opened up.

His move may not be permanent should Chris Olave declare for the draft after the season. Top 100 wide receivers Mookie Cooper and Jaxon Smith-Njigba will have a college year under their belt and can man that spot if needed. Wilson could join Jullian Fleming, Gee Scott Jr. and Jameson Williams as outside threats. With Ryan Day calling plays, Wilson's third season could mirror the improvements superstar wide receivers display with added NFL experience. He'll be dangerous no matter where he lines up. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Documents regarding the coronavirus that universities, including Ohio State, have required athletes to sign in order to participate in workouts on campus have drawn scrutiny from Congress. Sens. Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, and Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat, introduced legislation Tuesday aimed at prohibiting the waivers called pledges or risk acknowledgment forms by some schools that could be used by schools as a form of liability protection, according to a news release. Referred to as the College Athlete Pandemic Safety Act, the bill also seeks to ban schools from revoking the scholarships of athletes who do not play for health and safety reasons related to COVID-19 and require schools to inform athletes when a player or staff member tests positive for the virus.

In a letter addressed to NCAA President Mark Emmert last week, Blumenthal and Booker referenced a "Buckeye Pledge" that Ohio State's athletes were required to sign before returning to campus to work out earlier this month. Football players were first to return to the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and Schumaker Complex for voluntary workouts on June 8, followed by men's and women's basketball players, along with athletes from some other fall sports. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/28/20 - Mike Adams, Sr/2012, Ohio State, 6-7, 323 (DS#5 OT) + More +

Ten years ago, their lives were about to crash. And it was all because of NCAA violations involving actions that soon will become permissible and even encouraged. So it's no surprise that Mike Adams, Daniel "Boom" Herron, DeVier Posey and Solomon Thomas have watched the NCAA change its stance on allowing college athletes to profit from their name, image and likeness (NIL) with more than a passing interest. Those four, along with star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, were the Ohio State football players involved in the tattoo-and-memorabilia scandal that led to Jim Tressel's forced exit as coach in May 2011. For selling memorabilia and/or receiving free tattoos, the players were suspended for five games by the NCAA, essentially ruining Ohio State's 2011 season and causing sanctions that kept the undefeated 2012 team from playing for the national title. Pryor never again played for the Buckeyes.

Whenever new NIL rules are established after what promises to be a contentious process, college athletes will be able to earn money doing what the OSU players did. It's not hard to see the irony. "Scandal is the new normal," Herron told The Dispatch with a chuckle. Adams said the players still refer to themselves as the "Tat 5." They believe the NIL change is long overdue. "I think it's awesome," Adams said. "I love it." Posey jokingly called himself and the other four as "pioneers" for NIL, not that it was their intention. But they did see themselves as exploited athletes who saw everyone else but them monetarily profit off their labor. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/23/20 - Josh Proctor, rSr/2024, Ohio State, 6-2, 209 (DS#9 FS) + More +

OSU has seen players go from non-contributors to All-American, first-round draft pick status. Proctor's skill set suggests he can do the same, and Ohio State might need him to be all that and more. The Buckeyes haven't had a safety lead in interceptions since Damon Webb's five in 2017. It was the fifth straight season with a safety atop the team in picks. That was an Ohio State secondary that relied heavily on press-man coverage and having a free safety with the capability of sideline-to-sideline playmaking. Last season, the defensive scheme shifted to more of a zone look, which meant a player doing what Malik Hooker did in 2016 wasn't a necessity. That made Jordan Fuller the perfect fit to compliment two first-round draft picks in Okudah and Damon Arnette along with a potential 2021 first-round pick in Shaun Wade.

Defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has a reputation of turning cornerbacks into first-rounders. Still, he's not returning to a room with two returning veterans combined with two former five-stars with plenty of experience. Last year's coordinator Jeff Hafley didn't rotate in the secondary, meaning Wade is the only returning player with more than just a handful of meaningful snaps. Proctor's playmaking ability fits what could be required from a single-high safety in 2020. When he had opportunities in 2019, Proctor showed why he has a high ceiling. But his mistakes in the Fiesta Bowl were concerning. Or perhaps it was just the result of a player put in an unfamiliar situation against Clemson's abundant talent. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/18/20 - *Justin Fields, Jr/2021, Ohio State, 6-3, 227 (DS#4 QB) + More +

Ohio State will play Alabama in a home-and-home series in 2027 and 2028, The Dispatch has learned. The Crimson Tide will come to Ohio Stadium on Sept. 18, 2027. Ohio State will go to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to play Sept. 9, 2028, in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The visiting team will receive a $1 million payment for both games. If a team backs out of the games, the fee will be $3 million to the other school. Both provisions are unusual for a game involving elite opponents. "The reason why that is that high is the desired execution of this series," Ohio State deputy athletic director Diana Sabau said. "Absolutely, 100 percent, both teams want to make this happen."

The series will be the first regular-season games between the schools since they met in the Kickoff Classic on Aug. 27, 1986, at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The teams have never played on each other's campus. Ohio State and Alabama have played four times, all at neutral sites. Alabama won the Kickoff Classic as well as the 1978 Sugar Bowl and 1995 Florida Citrus Bowl. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/16/20 - Mike Doss, Sr/2003, Ohio State, 5-10, 207 (DS#2 SS) + More +

Ohio State football's candidates for the College Football Hall of Fame is now a trio. Defensive back Mike Doss joined linebacker James Laurinaitis and offensive tackle Chris Ward on the 78-man ballot for the 2021 induction class. The ballot went out Tuesday, and the selections will be announced in early 2021. Doss was a three-time first team All-American. The Canton native totaled 331 tackles, eight interceptions, six sacks and eight fumble recoveries. His most famous takeaway was an interception against Miami quarterback Ken Dorsey to help secure the 2002 BCS National Championship game victory. Doss was the 2002 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year prior to a seven-year NFL career with the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals. Laurinaitis piled up 375 tackles in his OSU career, including 24.5 for loss, with 13 sacks and nine interceptions. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/15/20 - Malcolm Jenkins, Sr/2009, Ohio State, 6-0, 204 (DS#1 CB) + More +

CNN has hired former Ohio State football player Malcolm Jenkins as a commentator on national affairs related to racism and social justice. "Having spent years running non-profits and supporting grassroots organizations to address the inequalities of our criminal justice system, educational system and disparate wealth in our marginalized communities, I believe I can be a voice for other athlete activists and those who have dedicated their lives to changing legislation, policies and reforms for human equality," Jenkins said in a statement.

"Now more than ever, the public needs to be educated on the roles of elected positions of power, such as the District Attorney, Police Chief or City Council and how to hold those individuals accountable, especially through their voice and their vote. In an important election year, I'm eager to join the CNN family and share my perspective as a regular contributor." Jenkins has often used his platform to discuss social justice issues in America, including recently in a Twitter post condemning the comments made by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees regarding players kneeling during the National Anthem. He is expected to appear on several CNN studio shows. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/15/20 - *Ezekiel Elliott, Jr/2016, Ohio State, 6-0, 225 (DS#1 RB) + More +

Former Ohio State football star Ezekiel Elliott tested positive for COVID-19 but is not ill or experiencing symptoms, according to his agent. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Elliott's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, said the Dallas Cowboys running back is "feeling good." WFAA's Mike Leslie cited a source close to Elliott in saying the running back took the test last week because he came in contact within someone else who had the virus. Elliott later took to social media to express displeasure that the story had leaked. Elliott has twice led the NFL in rushing in his four seasons with the Cowboys. Last season he rushed for 1,357 yards and 12 touchdowns and added 420 yards and two touchdowns on 52 receptions. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  06/11/20 - *Chase Young, Jr/2020, Ohio State, 6-5, 264 (DS#1 DE) + More +

After a prolific junior season in which he became the first defensive lineman in a decade to be a finalist for football's Heisman Trophy, Ohio State's Chase Young has been named the Big Ten's male athlete of the year. His selection was announced Thursday, along with Wisconsin women's volleyball player Dana Rettke, who was the conference's female athlete of the year. Before leaving for the NFL draft, where he became the second overall pick, taken by the Washington Redskins, Young totaled 16.5 sacks for the Buckeyes, leading the nation and setting a single-season school record. Helping Ohio State to return to the College Football Playoff after a two-year absence, Young also finished with 21.5 tackles for loss. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/04/20 - C.J. Saunders, Sr/2021, Ohio State, 5-10, 179 (DS#92 WR) + More +

Ohio State wide receiver C.J. Saunders will not face a misdemeanor charge for violating curfew in Columbus, according to online court records. A Franklin County Municipal Court judge dismissed his case for time served during an arraignment Thursday. Saunders had been arrested for a curfew violation Monday night near just north of Ohio State's campus after attending protests over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died while in police custody in Minneapolis last week.

Since last weekend, Columbus has had a curfew implemented that starts at 10 p.m. and expires at 6 a.m. in an effort to quell some of the demonstrations, which have arisen in cities across the country. Saunders was held in the Franklin County jail before he posted a $104 bond Tuesday morning. In the aftermath of Floyd's death, Saunders has been outspoken regarding issues involving racial justice. He was featured in a video message promoting racial equality that was released by Ohio State and addressed a crowd at a player-driven protest on Tuesday. - Columbus Dispatch

  06/02/20 - C.J. Saunders, Sr/2021, Ohio State, 5-10, 179 (DS#92 WR) + More +

Ohio State football receiver C.J. Saunders was arrested Monday night for a violation of the curfew imposed in Columbus in response to widespread protests. According to online court records, Saunders posted bond Tuesday morning. His arraignment on a misdemeanor charge of violation of ordered curfew is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday. Eleven Warriors first reported Saunders' arrest. The arrest report cited did not specify whether Saunders was participating in a protest. A 10 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew had been imposed in Columbus, and according to that report, Columbus Police Department officers detained Saunders at 10:45 p.m. Saunders, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship, was selected as a team captain for the 2019 season. However, he did not play due to lingering injuries. He has been in the process of seeking an NCAA medical hardship waiver that would grant him a sixth year of eligibility so he can return to the team in 2020. Saunders was one of 16 Buckeye players included in an anti-racism video posted to Twitter on Monday night. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
