  Citing a rising number of COVID-19 cases in its program, Michigan canceled its annual showdown with Ohio State on Tuesday as college football lurches toward the end of the season without one of its cornerstone rivalry games. The season-ending grudge match known as "The Game" won't be played for the first time in 102 years. "The number of positive tests has continued to trend in an upward direction over the last seven days," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel said. “We have not been cleared to participate in practice at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close contact individuals. This decision is disappointing for our team and coaches but their health and safety is paramount, and it will always come first in our decision-making." The third-ranked Buckeyes played through what coach Ryan Day called a “mini outbreak" last Saturday in a 52-12 win at Michigan State after he was relegated to watching the game from home. His "pick six" in the third quarter against Indiana on Nov. 21 gave the Buckeyes a 42-21 lead in a game they went on to win, 42-35.   Oregon State quarterback Tristan Gebbia will not play again this season. The redshirt junior will have surgery on his injured hamstring later this week and miss the remainder of the 2020 campaign, Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith said Monday. "A lot went into a decision, but ultimately (it) is gonna be the best for his future," Smith said. "We totally support it and understand it." Chance Nolan, who made his first start for the Beavers on Saturday at Utah, will be Oregon State’s starting quarterback from here on out.   2020 OUTLAND TROPHY SEMIFINALIST: Wyatt Davis, G, Ohio State (6-4, 315, Jr., Bellflower, Calif.): Davis is at the forefront of an offensive line that guides one of the country's most explosive offenses. The Buckeyes in five games played are fourth nationally in scoring offense at 46.6 points per game and sixth nationally in total offense at 536.4 ypg while leading the Big Ten in rushing at 233.2 ypg. The interior protection by Davis, a second-team FWAA All-American last year, has been stellar as Justin Fields moved to fourth in the nation in quarterback efficiency while completing 79 percent of his passes with 13 touchdowns against only three interceptions. Ohio State has four Outland winners in its past, started off by guard Jim Parker in 1956. Middle guard Jim Stillwagon (1970) and offensive tackles John Hicks (1973) and Orlando Pace (1996) have won it since.   Tough coaching was supposed to put Palaie Gaoteote's career back on track, but after a few months under new USC defensive coordinator Todd Orlando, the promising former five-star linebacker is on his way out of L.A. Gaoteote has entered the NCAA transfer portal after three seasons at USC, presumably closing the book on an up-and-down tenure with the Trojans. The junior linebacker missed the previous two games while in concussion protocol, but had been billed for a major role in USC's revamped defense. His departure leaves the Trojans especially thin at inside linebacker, where their depth already was decimated by injuries this season. The shortened season seemed like an ideal opportunity for Gaoteote, who arrived at USC in 2018 as one of the nation's top linebacker prospects. Injuries slowed his progress over his first two seasons, which were otherwise marred by missed tackles and lapses in technique. - Los Angeles Times

  Trey Sermon had his best run as a Buckeye, breaking a tackle in the backfield and then making a safety miss on a 25-yard gain down to the 5. He didn't have to do as much work on his 64-yard touchdown run when he popped through a hole on third-and-1 -- the safety took an awful angle, and Fields proved he was faster than both Sermon and the safety as he ran with them down the field. Sermon's issue has been getting yards on his own. Breaking a tackle and making a second-level move on the 25-yarder showed something he hasn't done much as a Buckeye. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  A defensive tackle catching a tipped pass for an interception is a pretty rare occurrence. Not for Haskell Garrett lately. The Ohio State senior had the biggest defensive play in the Buckeyes' 52-12 victory over Michigan State on Saturday when he tipped a pass from Spartans quarterback Rocky Lombardi and intercepted the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. "It's pretty weird," Garrett said. "In walk-throughs on Thursday, the ball got tipped up in practice. I caught it and ran it back. Fortunately, it happened (again) during the game."

For any defensive lineman, it would have been a special moment. For Garrett, whose season was imperiled when he was shot in the face in August trying to break up an altercation, it was even bigger. "It means a lot," he said. "It reassures me that I'm putting the right work in and doing the right things. It was very emotional. And I was just happy to change the momentum of the game." To be truthful, the game was already going the Buckeyes' way. Garrett's touchdown made it 28-0 in the second quarter as Ohio State's defense stifled the Spartans' offense.   Justin Fields left in the second quarter of Ohio State football's game against Michigan State after taking a bad hit and might have given us a glimpse at the Buckeyes' QB future. The Buckeyes were always going to keep things as close as possible between Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud as true freshmen. The only way we'd get any indication of who might be leading a battle that will soon add 2021 commit Kyle McCord was if Fields had to leave a game. It was only for a single play -- a handoff to Master Teague -- but Stroud got the call over Miller and Gunnar Hoak, who's in his second season on the roster. Fields returned as OSU built a 28-0 halftime lead. It was Stroud's second snap as a Buckeye, following one play late in the win over Rutgers. Miller played six snaps in the season opener against Nebraska, scoring his first points in college football. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Justin Fields' Ohio State football life is primarily spent in the company of two men. Quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis runs his position group, refining the Heisman Trophy finalist's performance each week in meetings and film study. Head coach Ryan Day, though, remains hands-on with Fields' development, occasionally pulling him aside during practices for one-on-one work. Both coaches have been affected by the coronavirus cases that hit the program right before Thanksgiving. Day was confirmed to have tested positive, and Dennis was among four assistants who did not travel to Saturday's game against Michigan State.

Fields kept taking his tests every day, not knowing if he might also have to join his coaches in watching the game from home. "Honestly, I was surprised I didn't get it, but I guess God was looking out for me," Fields said following a 52-12 victory over the Spartans. The absence of Day and Dennis also forced more leadership responsibilities onto Fields' shoulders. He turned to offensive quality control coach Keenan Bailey for support and logistics. Co-offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson oversaw the game plan and called plays Saturday. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  Justin Fields threw for two touchdowns and Haskell Garrett scored on an interception to lift No. 3 Ohio State to an easy 52-12 victory over Michigan State on Saturday. The Buckeyes (5-0, 5-0 Big Ten, No. 4 CFP) were able to take the field after a coronavirus-related cancellation the previous weekend. They were without coach Ryan Day and a few other members of the staff. Ohio State also had a list of 23 unavailable players, but none of that seemed to faze the Buckeyes. Fields also ran for two touchdowns, and the Buckeyes led 28-0 at halftime. Now the big question is whether Ohio State's regular-season finale against Michigan next weekend will be played. The Wolverines did not play this weekend for virus-related reasons. The concern for the Buckeyes is that they could fall short of the six-game threshold to be eligible for the Big Ten title game. Michigan State (2-4, 2-4) was coming off a win over another undefeated team - Northwestern - but the Spartans were overmatched Saturday. Rocky Lombardi was shaken up and left the game after being sacked in the second quarter, and by that time, the rout was already on. - Ohio State/AP College Football
