  08/09/22 - Gee Scott Jr.rSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-3, 238 (DS#7 FB) + More +

Gee Scott Jr.'s transformation from a big wide receiver to a legitimate tight end body appears to be complete. He is listed at 6-3, 235 pounds and looks it. Offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Kevin Wilson has talked up Scott's pound-for-pound strength in the past, but the remaining goal was working on his blocking skill. The more progress he shows there in the preseason, the more he may play this fall. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  08/09/22 - *Ronnie HickmanrJr/2023, Ohio State, 6-1, 209 (DS#6 FS) + More +

Over March and April, it left Knowles with a glimpse of the potential of Proctor, who enters his fifth season with the Buckeyes on the cusp of his biggest role. "He's a guy that can really change the game," Knowles said. "He's what we want at safety." Proctor, who was a part-time starter at free safety in 2020 before being sidelined for most of last season, is likely to be at another spot in the secondary. That's at the boundary safety position known as the "bandit," while Ronnie Hickman steps into the free safety spot as the "adjustor." Tanner McCalister, who followed Knowles in transferring from Oklahoma State, is the favorite to step in as the slot safety, forming the potential trio of starting safeties.

The role for Hickman comes with a lot of responsibilities. Positioned in the middle of the field, he'll cover a lot of safety. And as the nickname suggest, he'll make his share of adjustments to the defense before the snap based on looks from the offense. Hickman said he is prepared for it after lining up in a safety-linebacker hybrid role a year ago. "It's just going out there and being the best teammate I can be for my brothers," Hickman said. "Just like they would do the same. I'm going to do that for them. So I don't really see it as a burden or something I got to carry or something like that. It's going out there and being a teammate with my guys." The three safeties are all veterans with Hickman preparing for his fourth season, and Proctor and McCalister in their fifth seasons. - Columbus Dispatch

  08/09/22 - Josh ProctorrSr/2024, Ohio State, 6-2, 209 (DS#9 FS) + More +

Ohio State football went through its first two days of fall camp in preparation for the 2022 season showing off some interesting things on defense. The Buckeyes are installing a new scheme under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles that's been described as "safety-driven." That means three spots for a safety room that already has plenty of depth, and that could result in a potential six-man rotation. Linebacker also brings back a ton of depth but also questions of if a five-star true freshman is the most talented option long term. The same can be said on the defensive line, where a mixture of veterans and young talent gives coach Larry Johnson options. OSU's defense returns a ton from a team that played a ton of youth but struggled to live up to the expectations that the program should produce a top-10 defense. After gaining a year of experience, it looks like it might be capable of doing that in 2022, at least on paper. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

  08/05/22 - Harry MillerrSr/2024, Ohio State, 6-3, 315 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Despite not being on Ohio State football's roster heading into the 2022 season, Harry Miller is still putting in work. The former Buckeye offensive lineman tweeted that he had lost 60 pounds since March 31 and is 260 pounds after four months of training, and that he had "finally achieved" a sub six-minute mile. "Sic Parvis Magna," Miller tweeted, quoting Sir Francis Drake, which translates to "Thus great things from small things." Miller, a former five-star offensive lineman in Ohio State's 2019 class, announced March 11 he would medically retire from football due to mental health concerns after contemplating suicide.

In a Twitter statement, Miller said that prior to the 2021 season, he told Ohio State coach Ryan Day of his intention to kill himself. "He immediately had me in touch with Dr. Candice (Williams) and Dr. (Josh) Norman, and I received the support I needed. After a few weeks, I tried my luck at football once again, with scars on my wrists and throat. "…There was a dead man on the television set, but nobody knew it. "At the time, I would rather be dead than a coward. I'd rather be nothing at all, than have to explain everything that was wrong. I was planning on being reduced to my initials on a back of a helmet." Day, whose father died by suicide when he was 8, has made adolescent mental health a passion project off the field, adding a staff of psychologists to the Ohio State football staff to help players with mental health issues. - Columbus Dispatch

  08/03/22 - *C.J. StroudrSo/2023, Ohio State, 6-3, 214 (DS#1 QB) + More +

One of the few criticisms of C.J. Stroud last year was about his reluctance to run. He's not going to be Braxton Miller, J.T. Barrett or Justin Fields with his legs, but Stroud said that's an element he'll be more willing to use. "I don't want to prove anything, but I definitely want to show that I can run the ball," he said. "If my number is called to do that this year, then I will." That would add another dimension to an Ohio State offense that led the country in scoring and yards last year. With a supporting cast that includes Smith-Njigba and several emerging stars at receiver, sophomore running back TreVeyon Henderson and a potentially dominating offensive line, OSU's offense that could be at least as potent as last year's. Complacency will not be an issue for Stroud. "I feel like I barely touched my potential," he said. "I feel like I can do a lot more. Hopefully. God blesses me with that opportunity, and I'm working for that." - Columbus Dispatch

  08/03/22 - Taron VincentrSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-1, 304 (DS#32 DT) + More +

Taron Vincent entered OSU as a five-star tackle but has been beset by injuries. Finally healthy at the end of last year, he was a force in the Rose Bowl and looks poised to build on that. "I think Taron is going to be great," Knowles said. "He's got experience. He showed great leadership and a great attitude. He's open to the process of wanting to learn the new system. And he's smart. He's picked things up quickly, so I think the sky's the limit." - Columbus Dispatch

  08/03/22 - Zach HarrisonSr/2023, Ohio State, 6-6, 269 (DS#10 DE) + More +

Zach Harrison was a five-star recruit from Olentangy Orange who has steadily improved. He showed flashes of dominance last year as well as more overall consistency. Harrison led the team with eight tackles for loss. But if he's going to become elite he must have more than the four sacks he had in 2021. "He's had a really good offseason," Day said. "I'm really impressed with just the way he's going about his business. Looks awesome, so we're expecting a big year from Zach." - Columbus Dispatch

  08/03/22 - *C.J. StroudrSo/2023, Ohio State, 6-3, 214 (DS#1 QB) + More +

Tyler Nubin and his fellow Minnesota defenders had little intel on which to base their game plan for Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud in last season's opener. A little film from the Buckeyes' spring game. Some scouting reports from the recruiting scene. Stroud did not throw a pass in 2020 as a true freshman. He attempted 22 that night against the Golden Gophers. Nubin said the quarterback they faced was no novice. "He's ultra-talented, man," Nubin said. "His arm talent is something I honestly had not seen in a while." Stroud threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns with one interception against Minnesota. That night, especially a much cleaner second half, set the stage for a season that culminated in a trip to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist and a blistering Rose Bowl performance.

Stroud led Big Ten quarterbacks in pass efficiency rating by almost 30 points. That mark of 186.56 was the highest in the conference since Wisconsin's Russell Wilson posted a 191.78 in 2011. Wilson, though, did that as a fifth-year player and fourth-year starter. Setting aside early struggles related to a sore right shoulder, Stroud debuted as, if not a finished product, certainly a more complete one. Asking around various defensive players at Big Ten Media Days this week, a consensus formed that Stroud did not look, act or think like a Big Ten quarterback. "He's just more of a pro quarterback compared to the other guys, from where he puts the ball to how he stands in the pocket and the poise - just looking like a pro football player," Nebraska cornerback Quinton Newsome said. "It's something you can see on film, but you don't really know until you're going against him." - Cleveland Plain Dealer
