J.T. Tuimoloau had a strip sack to set up No. 2 Ohio State for a separation-score in the fourth quarter and then a pick-6 to cap a spectacular performance by the defensive end as the Buckeyes erased a fourth-quarter deficit to beat No. 13 Penn State 44-31 Saturday. C.J. Stroud found his groove for Ohio State in the fourth quarter and finished with 354 yards passing as the Buckeyes (8-0, 5-0 Big Ten) ran their winning streak in the rivalry to six in a row - none by more than 13 points. As has often been the case when these teams get together lately, the Buckeyes were a double-digit favorite and the Nittany Lions (6-2, 3-2) played them tough. In this case, though, Penn State didn't just hang around. The Nittany Lions went up 21-16 with 9:26 remaining in the fourth quarter on a tough 1-yard touchdown run by Kaytron Allen on fourth down.

Ohio State outscored Penn State 28-3 the rest of the way, with Tuimoloau providing the key play after the Buckeyes went up 23-21. Tuimoloau also recovered the fumble after swiping the ball from Sean Clifford with 8:26 left in the fourth quarter. One play later, Stroud connected with Cade Stover, who rumbled through the Penn State defense for a 24-yard touchdown to make it 30-21. Tuimoloau also had his first career interception in the first quarter, a tipped pass at the line of scrimmage that resulted in Ohio State's first interception of the game and another sack. For his final act, Tuimoloau beat his block, reached up and grabbed Clifford's short pass attempt at the 14-yard line and cruised into the end zone to make it 44-24. Clifford threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns, but committed four turnovers. TreVeyon Henderson scored twice in Ohio State's fourth-quarter outburst, including a 41-yard run 35 seconds after Penn State took the lead. He added a 7-yard touchdown run with 2:52 left to make it 37-24. - Ohio State/AP College Football

The leadup to defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau's freshman season at Ohio State was cramped. His prolonged recruitment, a result of the coronavirus pandemic, made for a late arrival last summer. After holding off on a commitment until the Fourth of July, he enrolled only a couple of weeks before the start of preseason training camp. But this has been a traditional offseason of preparation with spring practice and strength and conditioning workouts following his debut. "It just feels great to have a full season and everything under your belt," Tuimoloau said. The routine has left him in position to emerge as a potential breakout star on the Buckeyes' defensive line. It's a leap veteran defensive line coach Larry Johnson sees as a possibility.

Johnson remarked after practice on Tuesday that a lot of promising linemen take their biggest step in development in their second seasons. "If he continues to move forward," Johnson said, "he'll have the chance to do something special down the road." Few players on the roster are as talented as Tuimoloau, who was the crown jewel of the Buckeyes' recruiting class in 2021 and one of the highest-ranked prospects in the nation in the cycle. Even after stepping foot onto campus later than the rest of his freshman class, he showed glimpses of his potential last fall, finishing with 17 tackles, including 4.5 for a loss, and 2.5 sacks. "I've seen him grow a lot in a lot of areas," Johnson said. "I've seen him mature. I've seen a guy who's gotten much stronger. He's more flexible. He can bend. He can run. And he's playing practice really well." - The Columbus Dispatch

  08/17/21 - DE JT TuimoloauSr/2025, Ohio State, 6-4, 270 (DS#3 DE) + More +

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day has been very impressed "with the tremendous attention to detail" of defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau during fall camp. J.T. Tuimoloau's offseason program at Ohio State has been condensed. Unlike other freshmen who enrolled in January ahead of spring practice or at the start of the summer semester, the coveted defensive end prospect didn't arrive until last month. It was the result of a prolonged recruitment. Tuimoloau held off until the Fourth of July before settling on a college destination, affording him the chance to visit schools in June after the NCAA lifted a recruiting dead period that had been in place since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic.

Despite the late start, Tuimoloau has impressed the Buckeyes' coaching staff through the first five practices of preseason training camp. Coach Ryan Day said he has received a lot of positive feedback from defensive line coach Larry Johnson and others who have been in meetings with him. "Also, what I see on the field is tremendous attention to detail," Day said. "Very conscientious, takes a lot of notes, can take a meeting to the field in short order, and so because of that, he's made up a lot of ground in a very short amount of time." - Columbus Dispatch
