Drew Pyne threw for 262 yards and three touchdowns, Michael Mayer caught 11 passes for 118 yards and two scores and Notre Dame won its third straight by beating No. 16 Brigham Young 28-20 on Saturday night. The game was the 11th edition of Notre Dame's annual Shamrock Series and marked the first time the Irish faced a fellow FBS Independent since a 44-6 victory over Army in 2016. The Irish opened 0-2 under first-year coach Marcus Freeman with losses against No. 3 Ohio State and at home to Marshall before their win streak. BYU (4-2) was led by quarterback Jaren Hall, who was 9 of 17 for 120 yards passing with two touchdowns. Chris Brooks rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries, including one touchdown, while Kody Epps caught four passes for 100 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Notre Dame improved to 11-0 all-time in its Shamrock Series, in front of an announced gathering of 62,742, the largest crowd for a college athletic event in Nevada history. Trailing 25-6 early in the second half, the Cougars made things interesting by scoring 14 unanswered points to make it 25-20. After Brooks cut Notre Dame's lead to five with a 28-yard touchdown scamper, Cougars linebacker Max Tooley picked off Pyne and put the ball back in the BYU's hands. But the Cougars couldn't capitalize and went three-and-out. Blake Grupe's 20-yard field goal gave the Irish an eight-point lead. BYU then drove into Notre Dame territory but had its drive halted when defensive tackle Jayson Ademilola dragged Cougars running back Lopini Katoa down on 4th-and-1. Notre Dame set the tone early when TaRiq Bracy intercepted Hall on the first offensive play from scrimmage. Riley Leonard ran for two touchdowns and threw for another and Duke snapped a 13-game Atlantic Coast Conference losing streak in beating Virginia 38-17 on Saturday night. Duke (4-1, 1-0 ACC) scored three touchdowns during an 11-minute span of the first half. The Blue Devils didn't win an ACC game last year as part of a conference drought that lasted nearly two full calendar years. Leonard completed 18 of 24 passes for 129 yards and added 59 rushing yards. Jaylen Coleman picked up 97 rushing yards on 19 carries. Brennan Armstrong threw for a touchdown and scrambled for a touchdown for Virginia (2-3, 0-2), which has lost all three road games this season and five in a row dating to last season.

The Blue Devils scored on their first possession of the second half when Leonard ran in from 1 yard out. They stretched the lead to 35-10 on Jaquez Moore's 59-yard run in the first minute of the fourth quarter. In the first half, Leonard's 19-yard pass to Jalon Calhoun opened the scoring. Leonard ran 2 yards and Jordan Waters scored on a 1-yard plunge into the end zone to boost the lead to 21-0 with 10:25 to play in the second quarter. Sam Hartman threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns, Justice Ellison ran for 114 yards and a touchdown and No. 22 Wake Forest beat No. 23 Florida State 31-21 on Saturday. Wake Forest (4-1, 1-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) ran for 171 yards and bounced back from its double-overtime loss to No. 5 Clemson. Hartman connected with eight receivers, with A.T. Perry leading the way with eight receptions for 91 yards and a touchdown. The Demon Deacons also converted 7 of 11 third downs and 2 of 2 fourth downs as they took a 21-7 lead at the half.

Jordan Travis connected with Mycah Pittman on touchdown receptions of 18 and six yards as the Seminoles opened both halves with TD drives. Travis completed 23 of 35 passes for 281 yards and three touchdowns. The Seminoles (4-1, 2-1) got within 28-21 with a 58-yard drive in the fourth quarter, which culminated in Travis’ 4-yard TD throw to Johnny Wilson and a two-point pass. But the Demon Deacons responded again with a long drive, ending in Matthew Dennis' 27-yard field goal to give them a 31-21 lead with 2:55 left. Riley Leonard threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Duke continued its strong start to the season by defeating North Carolina A&T 49-20 on Saturday night. Duke is 3-0 for the first time since 2018. Leonard ended up 11-for-12 passing for 155 yards – all in the first half – to go with a team-high 66 yards rushing on five carries. Leonard completed his first 11 passes before he was intercepted by Avarion Cole on his final throw late in the first half. N.C. A&T (0-3) scored on Andrew Brown field goals of 21 and 41 yards in the first half. The Aggies, who didn't score a touchdown a week earlier at North Dakota State, reached the end zone twice in the fourth quarter on Charlie Dixon's 8-yard run and Eli Brickhandler's 6-yard pass to Romello Kimbrough.

Duke scored three touchdowns in the first 8 1/2 minutes, beginning with the first play from scrimmage when Leonard connected with Nicky Dalmolin for a 38-yard play. The Blue Devils used 10 plays on their second possession, ending with Jordan Moore making a diving catch for a 4-yard touchdown. Duke's defense produced the next points when DeWayne Carter grabbed a fumble and ran 35 yards untouched for the score. In the second half, Leonard ran 56 yards for the first points. Liberty scored with about a minute left but No. 19 Wake Forest stopped CJ Yarbrough's two-point conversion attempt several yards short of the goal line for a tight 37-36 home win Saturday. The Demon Deacons' ground game was ineffective - 21 yards on 26 attempts - so they turned to defense and a passing game, with quarterback Sam Hartman throwing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Wake Forest remains unbeaten at 3-0. Liberty (2-1) had pulled within a single point on that late 18-yard, fourth-down touchdown grab by Demario Douglas, who jumped high and took the ball away from two Wake defenders in the end zone.

The second half turned out to be a shootout, pitting Hartman against elusive Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter, a former Tennessee recruit. But Matthew Dennis made the extra point after a 1-yard touchdown run from Justice Ellison with 3:39 left. The Deacons made three first-half interceptions en route to a 20-8 halftime lead, despite gaining only one yard on offense and yielding a safety on a blocked punt. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman has been medically cleared to play in the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons' trip to Vanderbilt this weekend after receiving treatment for a blood clot. The school announced Hartman's return Tuesday, roughly a month since announcing he would be out indefinitely due to what it described at the time only as a non-football medical issue. Tuesday's statement included details on Hartman's condition, treatment and recovery.

Hartman, now in his fifth year, was ranked as one of the nation's top quarterbacks last season for a team that reached the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. “There will be time for me to tell my complete story," Hartman said in a statement, "but right now I am just really excited to get back on the field with my teammates and compete each day to help our team get ready for Vanderbilt this Saturday in Nashville." In a statement, Julie A. Freischlag, the dean of the Wake Forest's medical school and a vascular surgeon, said Hartman developed the clot in the subclavian vein, located near the collarbone. It's known as Paget-Schroetter syndrome, or "effort thrombosis," and Freischlag said doctors believe it was caused by a previous infection that eventually led to inflammation. Hartman had a procedure Aug. 9 to remove the clot, as well as surgery to eliminate pressure in the vein and dilate it. - AP College Football
