  2019 PRESEASON BEDNARIK AWARD CANDIDATE: DE Julian Okwara, Notre Dame,...Okwara played in all 13 games in 2018 and started 12. He recorded 38 tackles and led the Irish in tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (8.0). According to Pro Football Focus, Okwara led Notre Dame with 40 quarterback hurries, which ranked as the fourth-most of any returning player across the country.   2019 PRESEASON MAXWELL AWARD CANDIDATE: QB Ian Book, Notre Dame,...Book, who took the starting reigns in the fourth game of the 2018 season, helped the Irish rip off eight consecutive victories, complete an undefeated regular season and a berth into the College Football Playoff semifinals (Cotton Bowl). He finished the season completing 68.2 percent (214 of 314) of his passes with 19 touchdowns and 2,628 yards.

He also rushed 95 times for 280 yards and four touchdowns. Book ranked eighth and 17th, respectively, in FBS completion percentage and pass efficiency. He became the first FBS signal-caller to win his first five starts of a season with a completion percentage of over 70 percent in each game since Russell Wilson at Wisconsin in 2011. - Notre Dame Football

  2019 PRESEASON DAVEY O'BRIEN NATIONAL QUARTERBACK AWARD WATCH LIST: Ian Book, Notre Dame, Sr., 6-1, 208, El Dorado Hills, Calif.,...Book, a 2018 O’Brien Award semifinalist, took the starting reigns in the fourth game of the 2018 season. He helped the Irish rip off eight consecutive victories, complete an undefeated regular season and a berth into the College Football Playoff semifinals (Cotton Bowl).

  Aaron Banks followed up his first year as a Notre Dame starting offensive lineman with a spring that had observers wondering if the left guard perhaps had the highest ceiling among a surging positon group. The positive momentum hit a speed bump recently as the 6-foot-6, 325-pound junior underwent foot surgery last week, a source confirmed Wednesday. Irish Sports Daily was the first outlet to report the news.

The source said Banks is expected to be ready sometime during training camp. The Irish open camp Aug. 4 in Culver, Ind. They open the 2019 season on the road, Sept. 2 at Louisville. The Alameda, Calif., product played in all 13 games last season for the Irish (12-1), but his role increased significantly after grad senior Alex Bars suffered a season-ending knee injury in game five against Stanford, on Sept. 29. - South Bend Tribune
