Justin Guin ran for 115 yards and one of three Northern Colorado rushing touchdowns, helping the Bears snap a five-game losing streak with a 24-13 victory over Portland State on Saturday. On Saturday night, Portland State fired coach Bruce Barnum and his staff. Athletic director Matt Billings made the announcement after speaking to the team. The Vikings (1-11, 1-7 Big Sky) lost their last three games after defeating Cal Poly 40-35 for their only conference win. In the season finale for both teams, Guin's 44-yard touchdown run and Brandon Johnson's 1-yard run gave the Bears (4-8, 2-6) a 14-7 halftime lead.

Mathias Price had a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter and Jacob Willig's 22-yard field goal in the final minute of the fourth quarter made it 24-13. Eric Gibson Jr. had 94 yards passing for the Bears and they added 215 yards on the ground. Portland State had the edge in total yards 326-309 but the Vikings did not find the end zone again after Cru Newman's 3-yard run gave them a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Eric Gibson Jr. threw for 350 yards with two touchdowns and Northern Colorado outlasted Idaho 49-33 on Saturday. The Bears (3-3, 1-1 Bog Sky) scored 35 points in the first half and added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Gibson completed 22 of 34 passes and threw TD passes of 7 yards to Mathias Price and 22 yards to Brayden Munroe, both in the second quarter. Munroe gained 151 yards on five receptions and Carver Cheeks had 120 yards on nine catches.

Jack Wagner passed for 237 yards and Rocco Koch had two touchdowns among his 81 yards rushing for Idaho (2-4, 0-2). Koch's 16-yard touchdown run had the Vandals within 35-25 in the third, but Cheeks recovered his own fumble for a touchdown that put the Bears up 42-25. Nate Thomas scored to get Idaho within 42-33 midway through the fourth, but Northern Colorado responded again with an 18-yard touchdown run by Brandon Johnson for the game's final points. - AP College Football

Matthias Price ran for 126 yards and a touchdown and Hank Gibbs scored the game-winning touchdown and Northern Colorado beat Houston Christian 26-23 in overtime on Saturday. The Huskies failed to score an offensive touchdown. Charlie Weinrich gave Houston Christian a 23-20 lead with a 37-yard field goal to start overtime for the Huskies. It was the Huskies' first lead since getting on the scoreboard first when Rodney Dansby intercepted North Colorado's Eric Gibson Jr. and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown on the third play from scrimmage.

Weinrich knotted it at 20 with 2:47 left with 50-yard field goal. With 4:21 left in the third quarter, he connected from 46 yards to bring his team within 20-17. Down 17-7, Tyran Chappell intercepted intercepted Northern Colorado's Eric Gibson Jr. and ran it back 82 yards with 29 seconds before halftime. Gibson threw for 215 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Carver Cheeks had 101 yards receiving on eight catches and a touchdown. Gibson's 6-yard scoring pass to Cheeks tied it at 7. Peter Costelli threw for a touchdown and ran for another and that was enough to carry Northern Colorado past Division II Chadron State, 17-3 on Saturday. After each team punted on its first drive, Costelli threw a 60-yard scoring pass to Brayden Munroe to complete a five-play, 80-yard drive. After the Eagles punted on their following drive, Northern Colorado held the ball for the next 14 plays and drove 91 yards in 7 minutes. Costelli ended the drive running it in from 19 yards out. DJ Ralph threw for 228 yards on 20-for-33 passing for Chadron State. Wilson Yee kicked a 29-yard field goal to prevent the shutout after missing earlier from 43 and 40 yards. It was the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs and the first since 2007, when Chadron State beat the Bears, 31-0. Northern Colorado announced that head coach Ed McCaffrey won't return after two seasons that saw the Bears go 6-16. A national search begins immediately, the school said Monday. "This is never an easy decision," director of athletics Darren Dunn said in a statement. "We appreciate all the work, time and energy Coach McCaffrey has put into the program and we wish him the best in the future." McCaffrey was hired on Dec. 12, 2019, but had to wait quite a while before making his coaching debut at the school. The Big Sky Conference decided to postpone its 2020 football season to the spring of 2021, and then Northern Colorado opted out of the spring season for health and safety reasons.

It was a family reunion at Northern Colorado for the McCaffrey family. Two of Ed McCaffrey's sons joined him on campus, with Max serving as the offensive coordinator and Dylan arriving to play quarterback after leaving Michigan. One of McCaffrey's other sons is Christian, who is a running back for the San Francisco 49ers. Ed McCaffrey played 13 seasons in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos, the 49ers and the New York Giants. He coached at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, where he led the Eagles to a 24-2 record and a title in 2018. - AP College Football

Dylan McCaffrey threw a touchdown pass with 25 seconds left and converted a 2-point conversion as Northern Colorado edged Northern Arizona 21-20 on Saturday. Trailing 20-13 with 7:50 to play, McCaffrey led a 24-play, 96-yard drive that was capped by a 15-yard strike to Ty Arrington on a fourth-and-goal play. Down a point, the Bears elected to go for 2 and McCaffrey lobbed it to Max Pierce, who lunged across the line. McCaffrey threw for 195 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Northern Colorado (3-7, 2-5 Big Sky Conference). McCaffrey had 16 carries for 191 yards. Elijah Dotson broke a tie with a short touchdown run and followed it up with a long punt return for a score to spark Northern Colorado's 35-14 victory over Idaho State on Saturday. The Bears broke the game open in the fourth quarter, scoring three touchdowns in the first 6-plus minutes of the period. Dotson's 2-yard touchdown run gave Northern Colorado a 21-14 lead with 14:23 remaining. After the Bears forced a punt, Dotson returned the kick 82 yards for a score. Northern Colorado struck again on Idaho State's next possession when Elijah Anderson-Taylor returned a fumble 47 yards for another score and a 35-14 lead.

Dotson had 211 all-purpose yards - 102 rushing and 27 receiving to go with the 82-yard punt return. Dylan McCaffrey completed 23 of 28 passes for 234 yards with one touchdown for the Bears (2-2, 1-0 Big Sky). Alec Pell caught six passes for 86 yards. Raiden Hunter had 111 yards on the ground for the Bengals (0-4, 0-1). Hunter Hays was 25-of-34 passing for 264 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
