McGill capped the game-starting drive for North Texas with a 7-yard touchdown run at the end of 10-play, 75-yard drive. Evan Jackson intercepted Jaxon Potter on Washington State's first drive, and immediately after Becks ran it in from the 12.   Makenzie McGill II scored on a 3-yard run in overtime, giving him 102 yards and North Texas a 33-30 win over Western Michigan on Saturday. After the Broncos kicked a long field goal to start overtime, the Mean Green took advantage of two penalties that set up the winning first-and-goal run for McGill. That was the only time North Texas, despite gaining 100 yards more than Western Michigan, was in the lead. Both penalties, pass interference and unsportsmanlike conduct, were on Jarvarius Sims.

Drew Mestemaker was 18-of-33 passing for 224 yards for North Texas (2-0). He guided a pair of nine-play drives in the fourth quarter to force overtime. His 4-yard pass to Cameron Dormer ended a 65-yard drive that cut the deficit to 27-24 with 10:03 left in regulation. The Mean Green then went 68 yards for the tying field goal with 1:35 remaining. Brock Lowry passed for one touchdown and ran for two for the Broncos (0-2). Jalen Buckley ran for 112 yards and added a 17-yard scoring reception from Lowry. North Texas finished with 406 total yards and Western Michigan had 303, 216 on the ground. - North Texas/AP College Football

Drew Mestemaker threw for 329 yards and three touchdowns in his second career start as North Texas cruised past Lamar 51-0 on Saturday night. Mestemaker completed 24 of 32 passes and added 30 yards and one score on the ground. The redshirt freshman was a walk-on last season after never starting in high school, but officially earned the starting job last week. He connected with Cameron Dorner on a 25-yard touchdown, and added another with a 32-yard pass to Wyatt Young.

Dorner had seven receptions for 98 yards, while Young hauled in four passes for 97. The Mean Green held Lamar to just 119 yards of total offense and had three sacks and eight tackles for loss. Ethan Wesloski led with seven tackles and 0.5 sacks. Kali Nguma was 6-for-6 on PATs and connected on his only field goal, a 28-yarder. Kyndon Fuselier led the Cardinals with four receptions for 45 yards. North Texas improves to 6-2 all-time against Lamar, who was a conference foe in the Southland Conference from 1983-86. - North Texas/AP College Football

UNT returns several defensive linemen who contributed in 2022 and could take another step forward next season. Vailea posted 44 tackles last season, when Brown added 40 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Johnson finished with 3.5 sacks. Each of those players should benefit from an additional year in UNT's strength and conditioning program. UNT needs those players to make a significant jump as it prepares to move from Conference USA to the American Athletic Conference. The challenge for most programs that move to a higher-level league is competing in the trenches. - Denton Record

  01/31/23 - Noah RauschenbergSr/2024, North Texas, 6-0, 198 (DS#18 K) + More +

North Texas landed Baylor transfer kicker Noah Rauschenberg on Wednesday. He could help fill the void after UNT lost Ethan Mooney to graduation. North Texas leaned on a long line of standout kickers over the last several years, from Trevor Moore to Cole Hedlund and most recently Ethan Mooney. UNT may have landed the next player in that line on Wednesday when former Baylor kicker Noah Rauschenberg committed to continue his career with the Mean Green. Rauschenberg spent four seasons at Baylor and was a two-time, first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection. He was primarily a kickoff specialist and saw 57 of his 75 kickoffs downed for touchbacks last season. - Denton Record

  01/13/23 - Ugonna NnannarSr/2026, North Texas, 6-4, 311 (DS#53 OG) + More +

The offseason reboot for Virginia's offensive line continued on Thursday when the Cavaliers gained a commitment from former Houston offensive guard/tackle Ugonna Nnanna. He announced his decision on Twitter. Nnanna spent the past three seasons with the Cougars before entering the transfer portal last month. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder appeared in games against Rice and Tulane this past season after playing in three contests the season before and one in his first year at Houston. In spite of his limited experience, Nnanna was a target of many FBS programs while in the portal. He earned 17 total offers, including 14 from FBS schools with offers notably coming from Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic and Marshall. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  01/04/23 - Austin AunerJr/2023, North Texas, 6-2, 215 (DS#42 QB) + More +

North Texas quarterback Austin Aune said before the 2022 season began that it would be his final year playing college football. There were a few twists along the way, but that is exactly where the former Argyle standout ended up on Monday, when he declared for the NFL draft. Aune made the announcement on his Instagram account just days after a standout season that saw him guide UNT to an appearance in the Conference USA championship game and the Frisco Bowl.

The announcement ended what will be remembered as one of the more unusual and memorable careers for a UNT player - and for a college football player in general. The former Argyle standout spent six seasons playing minor league baseball and turned 29 during the 2022 season. He had one season of eligibility remaining, which led to an interesting few days. Aune got married and had a daughter late in his college career. It seemed unlikely he would return for another year on the college level, especially after he said before the season that he was ready to wrap up his time in college. - Denton Record

2022 ALL-CONFERENCE USA FIRST TEAM: DB: Ridge Texada, North Texas,...Texada was called upon early in the year after John Davis, Jr., suffered a season-ending injury in the team's season-opening win at UTEP. The undersized cornerback didn't take long to seize the job and leave his mark. Through 13 games, Texada has 40 tackles, two tackles for-loss, a team-high three interceptions, and a team leading 15 pass breakups. Two more passes defended (interceptions + pass breakups) would give him the program record for a season, previously set by Kemon Hall in 2018 with 19. His three interceptions are the most for a UNT player since 2018. He enters the Frisco Bowl tied for fourth in FBS in total passes defended this season. - North Texas Football
