2020 PRESEASON LOU GROZA COLLEGIATE PLACE-KICKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Christopher Dunn, NC State,...A 2019 Groza semifinalist, Dunn's 87.5% field goal accuracy last season ranked fifth among kickers with at least his 24 attempts. That mark actually managed to bring down his career field goal percentage, but even so, no active FBS kicker with at least 50 career attempts can match his 88.0% connection rate. - Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award

Dreshun Miller makes this list of West Virginia University's most important players without ever playing a snap as a Mountaineer. WVU coaches had plans on playing him plenty of snaps in 2019. The junior college cornerback arrived in Morgantown with a stout resume, but a preseason knee injury dashed those hopes before they even got a chance to form. Miller was lost for the 2019 campaign to rehab that knee. Now he's healthy and WVU coaches no longer have to keep those plans on hold. Miller will be expected to step into a significant role in the Mountaineers' secondary, replacing some very talented people.

Miller's value does not come solely from how good he could be, but also from who he's supplanting. Keith Washington and Hakeem Bailey were crucial to a good chunk of the success the Mountaineer secondary did see last season. Washington was an All-Big 12 second-teamer who ranked in the top 25 in the Football Bowl Subdivision for passes defended and was named to the East-West Shrine game. Bailey finished fourth on the team with 57 tackles and broke up nine passes over 12 games in 2019. Miller's past exploits make him a prime candidate to help in that cause. The 6-foot-1, 190-pound redshirt junior was a four-star prospect out of Sprayberry High School and had offers from LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee and Auburn, among others. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

McNeill, 61, was the Pirates' head coach from 2010-15 and guided his alma mater to four bowl appearances during a college coaching career spanning more than three decades. He later joined Oklahoma's staff under Lincoln Riley - who had worked under him at ECU - for three seasons as assistant head coach. - AP College Football

West Virginia has placed defensive coordinator Vic Koenning on administrative leave while it launches an investigation into allegations of mistreatment made by safety Kerry Martin Jr. on Tuesday. Martin posted the allegations on Twitter, writing that, "We need a change in our program." The sophomore alleges that Koenning, who also coaches WVU's safeties, called him "retarded" during a team workout earlier this month and has made inappropriate comments about religion, politics and the recent demonstrations over racism and police brutality. Martin said he met with WVU coach Neal Brown about Koenning's behavior. - Daily Oklahoman

N.C. State will kick off its 2020 college football season one day earlier than expected in September. The school announced Monday morning that the Wolfpack's 2020 season opener at Louisville will be played Wednesday, Sept. 2. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3, but was moved to accommodate the 146th Kentucky Derby. The Derby was originally set for April 30 through May 2, but because of COVID-19 was pushed back to Sept. 3-5. The Thursday of Kentucky Derby week has been known as "Thurby," an event that is traditionally highly attended. Because of logistics between the Kentucky Derby and Louisville home football games, the Cardinals and Wolfpack agreed to move the game to Wednesday to avoid any traffic conflicts and operations. Cardinal Stadium and Churchill Downs are close in proximity and many Kentucky Derby attendees park at the football stadium. - Raleigh News Observer

The key returner in the position group is Brennan Armstrong. He served as Perkins' backup a season ago, and he's expected to be in contention for the starting quarterback job in 2020. Armstrong, a left-handed quarterback from Ohio, enters his third season in the program as a redshirt sophomore. He's an accurate passer with a good understanding of what's going on around him. While he isn't Perkins in terms of athletic ability, Armstrong possesses solid quickness as a runner and he's considered a dual-threat quarterback. He won't break off 70-yard touchdown runs like Perkins, but Armstrong can move the chains with his legs. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

North Carolina State has moved Tony Gibson to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. The school announced the move Wednesday, two days after the firing of Dave Huxtable as defensive coordinator. Gibson had joined the Wolfpack in January to coach safeties while carrying the title of co-defensive coordinator as N.C. State moved to a 3-3-5 defensive alignment during a four-win season. Gibson had previously coached at West Virginia. In a statement, head coach Dave Doeren says Gibson has "a strong vision for what we need to do on defense." N.C. State closed the season with a 41-10 loss to rival North Carolina last weekend and missed a bowl for the first time since Doeren's first season in 2013.
