There aren't many positions where N.C. State has to replace a starter. One of those places on offense is at tight end, where a former 210-pound quarterback is left to do the job of two men. Dylan Autenrieth was the blocker, basically in the game for running plays, serving as an extra offensive lineman. Cary Angeline was the pass catcher, snagging 27 catches and six scores a year ago. Autenrieth and Angeline aren't walking through that door. The person walking through that door is sixth-year senior Dylan Parham.

Parham arrived at NC State in 2016 out of Southeast Raleigh as a three-star, pro-style quarterback. However, he never took a snap under center for the Wolfpack. After redshirting in 2016, Parham made the switch to tight end before the 2017 season. That meant learning a new spot for the first time and reshaping his body; from extra sessions in the weight room to extra meals throughout the day. Parham, who always had the height for the position, standing 6 feet, 5 inches, is now 245 pounds, a veteran in a room full of unproven players, and ready to be the go-to guy. "Dylan Parham is a guy we're really excited for," head coach Dave Doeren said at ACC Kickoff. "He's been injured a lot in his career. He's worked really hard. He's in a position to excel at that spot." Parham has played in 32 games since the 2017 season, making him one of the most experienced players on the roster. - Raleigh News Observer

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall has been named to The Manning Award watch list, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, it was announced on Thursday. The list includes 32 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2021 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Six of last year's Manning Award finalists are included on this year's watch list in Matt Corral (Ole Miss), Dillon Gabriel (UCF), Sam Howell (North Carolina), Brock Purdy (Iowa State), Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), and McCall (Coastal Carolina). - Coastal Carolina Football

Wide receiver Thayer Thomas is also entering his fifth preseason camp. Thomas, who was second on the team in receptions a year ago, has seen plenty of fall practices and can tell when something is different. He noticed something about the first day that could be a good sign of things to come. "I don't ever remember being this clean coming into a fall camp for a first practice," Thomas said. "I don't think we had one turnover, it just seemed like everybody was on the same page, just a veteran group that knows how to practice at this point. Very excited to go from here. We were just happy with how clean it went today."

Thomas credited that cleanliness to a few things. First, having a full spring practice unlike last year helps. The group being so experienced also plays a huge part. The third thing, as Thomas explained, is the team taking care of and trusting each other on the field. "I can trust the defensive guys aren't going to try and take my head off," Thomas said. "Because we know each other's value and importance on this team. We just have good trust on both sides of the ball." N.C. State returns 20 starters and got some surprising returns in super seniors C.J. Riley, Emeka Emezie, Tyrone Riley and Daniel Joseph, all guys who took advantage of an extra year. - Raleigh News Observer

The transfer portal was good to the Wolfpack this off season, as the team landed some guys who should come in and make immediate impacts. On the defensive side of the ball, Corey Durden and Cyrus Fagan both came in from Florida State. Derrek Pitts, Jr. transferred from Marshall. Pitts, a cornerback, and Fagan, a safety, are expected to be in the secondary rotation right away. Pitts (6-1, 182) might steal a starting role at cornerback.

Durden (6-4, 310) will push C.J. Clark for the nose tackle position, replacing NFL rookie Alim McNeill, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions. On the other side of the ball, massive offensive guard Chandler Zavala (6-5, 325), a former Division II All-American at Fairmont State, could make his presence on the offensive line felt right away. N.C. State will be looking to replace Joe Sculthorpe at guard and Zavala looks like the perfect candidate. "We've brought in some transfers that are good players that were starters at their school," Doeren said. "They want to start for us, too." - Raleigh News Observer

When wide receiver Emeka Emezie decided to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA after a season lost to a global pandemic, N.C. State was the beneficiary, returning its top pass catcher from last season. With Emezie back for a fifth season, the Wolfpack returns nine of its top 10 receivers from 2020. The only missing piece - and it's a big one - is 6-foot, 7-inch tight end Cary Angeline, who is currently in preseason camp with the Arizona Cardinals. Angeline caught 27 passes for 410 yards a year ago, a safety blanket for N.C. State quarterbacks in the red zone. Even with Angeline gone, quarterback Devin Leary returns a group of wide outs who combined for 222 of the 252 passes caught last season. That group includes the top three receivers from last season: Emezie (47-738), Thayer Thomas (42-529), and Devin Carter (29-477). - Raleigh News Observer

Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall has been named one of 35 "players to watch" for its 2021 Player of the Year award, The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Friday. The award is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs, and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball.

In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. Already named to both the 2021 Maxwell Award preseason watch list and the 2021 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list, McCall continues to add to his preseason honors by being recognized by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. - Coastal Carolina Football

Western Kentucky football specialists Brayden Narveson and John Haggerty III are included on preseason watch lists, the school announced Wednesday. Narveson earned a spot on the Lou Groza Award Watch List, while Haggerty was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List. The Hilltoppers were one of 12 programs with both a kicker and a punter honored. After transferring to WKU in the summer of 2020, Narveson won the starting kicking job during fall camp and didn't look back, producing one of the most accurate campaigns in WKU's 102-season program history. The redshirt sophomore transfer made 13-of-14 field-goal attempts and was 27-of-27 on extra-point tries in 2020, scoring 66 total points in 12 games. His 93% field-goal mark tied for third among all FBS kickers and ranked second for a single season all-time in WKU history to Garrett Schwettman's 15-of-16 (94%) performance in 2015. - BG Daily News

The ACC named its preseason all-conference teams on Tuesday and N.C. State has three players representing the Wolfpack. The preseason team was voted on by the media at ACC Kickoff last week in Charlotte. Running back Zonovan 'Bam' Knight, offensive lineman Ikem 'Ikey' Ekwonu and linebacker Payton Wilson were named to the preseason team. Knight, a sophomore from Bailey, led the team with 788 yards and a team-high 10 touchdowns last season, all while splitting carries with Ricky Person, Jr. It was the second straight season Knight led the team in rushing yards. He's been named to the Doak Walker Award (top running back) and Maxwell Award (top player in college football) preseason watch list. - Raleigh News Observer

Linebacker Payton Wilson, the leading tackler in the ACC a year ago, didn't shy away from the expectations for his team, especially on his side of the ball. With 10 starters back, N.C. State's defense will be more experienced and battle tested than ever. Having played so many snaps and shown flashes last year, Wilson knows the chance is there for them to be one of the best Wolfpack defenses in a long time. "We want to be the best," Wilson said. "I think we can be the best defense in the ACC, if not the nation. Being plagued with injuries is something that hurt us in the past, but it was a blessing because guys who are now juniors were stuck out there as freshmen and now have playing experience."

Wilson was one of those players thrown into the fire as a redshirt freshman in 2019, when the team finished 4-8. He learned that season that "talent isn't enough" to get by. He has since become a student of the game, along with the rest of the veteran guys who had to learn on the fly. Now they know what to do and, most importantly, what needs to be done. Clemson, a divisional foe, has long sat on the throne atop the ACC. The Tigers come to Raleigh on Sept. 25, an early chance to see if the Pack is all talk or ready to take that next step. The Pack will find out if it is contenders or pretenders pretty early on in the season. "Living up to that expectation, it's not pressure," Wilson said. "It's more excitement. We want to be there, we want to knock the big man off the table." - Raleigh News Observer

Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall was named the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, as 11 total Chanticleers picked up Preseason All-Sun Belt honors, the league announced on Tuesday. In addition to the preseason all-conference teams, the Sun Belt Conference also announced the 2021 Sun Belt Conference Football Preseason Coaches Poll which saw the Chanticleers receive six first-place votes but finish tied with Appalachian State with 44 total points atop of the East Division preseason rankings.   Brennan Armstrong's first season as Virginia's starting quarterback opened slowly. Thanks to a strong second half, the Cavaliers' signal caller landed on the preseason 2021 Maxwell Award watch list. The Maxwell Award is given annually to college football's top player. The watch list was announced Monday, and Armstrong is one of eight ACC quarterbacks to make the list. A total of 80 players appear on the watch list, with 13 coming from the ACC.

The left-handed quarterback made some impressive plays against Duke, Clemson and N.C. State in his first three collegiate starts last season, but he also fired six interceptions compared to five touchdown passes and suffered a concussion in the first half against the Wolfpack. After a one-game absence due to the concussion, Armstrong played well late in the year. He tossed only five interceptions over the final six games of the season and scored 17 total touchdowns. On the season, Armstrong threw for 2,117 yards in nine games. He threw 18 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions and rushed for over 500 yards and five touchdowns. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Miller was a post-National Signing Day pickup for Auburn and stands as another new face in a remade Tigers secondary. Miller made the most of his one season as a Mountaineer by recording 31 tackles, eight pass break-ups and one interception. His role was a crucial one on a West Virginia pass defense that led the country by only allowing 159.6 passing yards per game. A Kennesaw, Georgia native, Miller steps in as another option at cornerback. He'll have to compete to earn playing time among the likes of Roger McCreary, Jaylin Simpson and Eric Reed Jr., but it's easy to see a path toward the junior seeing considerable snaps. - Opelika-Auburn News

After confirming last November that Vanderbilt would be without Donovan Kaufman for the rest of the season, Derek Mason provided an answer that made it clear how highly he thinks of the young defensive back's talent level. "It's always gotta be about the next man up … but I think Donovan is a different type of player," Mason said at the time. "As most of you got to see in only a small game sample, he's different in terms of what he brings to the table - defensively, special teams. He's a dude that's an impact player." Now, Mason is set to add that "impact player" to his defense at Auburn.

It's a noteworthy development for the Tigers and their new defensive coordinator. Kaufman, who committed to Auburn Wednesday, becomes the third defensive back transfer the Tigers have landed this offseason and gives the team a potential starter at the safety position next to 2020 All-SEC safety Smoke Monday. Kaufman, who was averaging an SEC-best 27.4 yards per kick return last year before his season-ending medical situation, could potentially help Auburn as a return man as well. "He's a competitive dog," a coach familiar with Kaufman told AL.com. "… He's built different. He is (all about) work, hard work." - Birmingham News
