Jack Chambers threw four touchdown passes, all to Garris Schwarting, who also threw one, and Charleston Southern beat the The Citadel 38-21 on Saturday in the Buccaneers season opener. The Buccaneers scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and never trailed. Chambers threw a 23-yard scoring pass to Schwarting for a 7-0 lead. Schwarting then threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Kyris Barnett for a two-score lead. Chambers closed the first throwing a 27-yard score to Schwarting. In the third, the duo connected on a 69-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 31-14. The pair made it 38-21 with 5:04 left on a 24-yarder. Cooper Wallace ran it in from 16 yards out to reduce the Bulldogs' (0-2) deficit to 31-21 with 2:31 left in the third but never got closer.   After seeing his offense start slowly in its season-opening win over William & Mary, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall designed his practices this week to correct that. The offense came quickly as Virginia scored touchdowns on its first two possessions Saturday against Illinois on its way to a 42-14 win. "I have a belief that we're designed for the results we get," Mendenhall said. "And so we just flipped the script." Brennan Armstrong threw for five touchdowns and became the third quarterback in program history to pass for over 400 yards as Virginia snapped a 9-game regular-season losing streak in non-conference games against Power Five opponents.

Armstrong threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns in the opening quarter, connecting with tight end Jelani Woods for a 32-yard score and wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks from 28-yards out, for a 14-0 lead while many fans were still filing into the stadium for the unusual 11 a.m. kickoff. Armstrong went 27 for 36 for 405 yards, joining Kurt Benkert (who did it twice) and Marc Verica as Virginia quarterbacks who surpassed 400 yards in a game. Wicks finished with a pair of touchdown catches for Virginia (2-0). - Virginia/AP College Football

Brennan Armstrong threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more and Virginia beat William & Mary 43-0 on in the opener for both teams Saturday night. Armstrong hit Demick Starling on a 65-yard scoring pass and Ra'Shaun Henry from five yards out. It was Henry's fifth touchdown in eight catches at Virginia. Freshman Darius Wilson started at quarterback for William & Mary in place of Hollis Mathis, still recovering from shoulder surgery, and got a rude welcome to the college game.

He completed nine of 15 passes, but for just 83 yards, and ran for 29 yards on six carries. The Tribe managed just 183 yards. "Darius' first start against an FBS team, you've got to give him some credit," Tribe coach Mike London said. "There's some things he's got to get better at and we've got to help him to make sure he uses his arms and his legs." Armstrong, who scored on runs of 2 and 3 yards, completed 20 of 30 attempts for 336 yards. The Cavaliers finished with 545 total yards. "He's a veteran quarterback that knows their scheme and knows their system," Tribe coach Mike London said of Armstrong. "I knew he was a good football player and he proved it today." - Virginia/AP College Football

Ricky Person Jr. scored three first-half touchdowns and was one of two North Carolina State players to run for more than 100 yards in the Wolfpack's 45-0 season-opening win against South Florida. It marked the Wolfpack's first season-opening shutout victory in 17 years. Fellow back Zonovan Knight ran for 163 yards and a 46-yard touchdown, part of a 293-yard rushing day in a dominating performance by N.C. State to start coach Dave Doeren's ninth season in Raleigh. "I just asked them to be mature, and they showed that to me," Doeren said, adding: "They really took things to heart that we pointed out in the offseason that we needed to improve on." Person had a 33-yard TD catch from Devin Leary on a perfectly executed wheel route on the Wolfpack's first drive, then scored a pair of 11-yard runs in the second quarter for a 24-0 halftime lead. It marked the second straight year that Person opened the season with a multi-TD game, and he went on to finish with 105 of his 148 total yards on the ground. - North Carolina State/AP College Football

Grayson McCall learned a lot of things from Coastal Carolina's breakthrough season last year. He's ready to carry them into this fall. "Now, we know the places we can go," McCall said. Especially with McCall in charge of the Chanticleers' offense. McCall threw for 262 yards and a touchdown and No. 22 Coastal Carolina scored on its first seven possessions in a season-opening 52-14 victory over The Citadel on Thursday night. The Chanticleers were among the biggest surprises last season, going 11-1 and winning the Sun Belt Conference's East Division after being picked last in the preseason.

They earned their first preseason ranking this year and made sure they lived up to the billing. "I do think the expectations are higher than last year," McCall said. "My job is to come in each week and go 1-0. Try and stay away from that stuff and focus on the team." McCall, last year's Sun Belt offensive player of the year, directed an efficient, dynamic offense that scored touchdowns the first four times it had the ball. After a field goal to close the opening half, the Chants scored TDs on its first two series of the third quarter. McCall completed 16 of 19 passes before coming out early in the third quarter. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

There aren't many positions where N.C. State has to replace a starter. One of those places on offense is at tight end, where a former 210-pound quarterback is left to do the job of two men. Dylan Autenrieth was the blocker, basically in the game for running plays, serving as an extra offensive lineman. Cary Angeline was the pass catcher, snagging 27 catches and six scores a year ago. Autenrieth and Angeline aren't walking through that door. The person walking through that door is sixth-year senior Dylan Parham.

Parham arrived at NC State in 2016 out of Southeast Raleigh as a three-star, pro-style quarterback. However, he never took a snap under center for the Wolfpack. After redshirting in 2016, Parham made the switch to tight end before the 2017 season. That meant learning a new spot for the first time and reshaping his body; from extra sessions in the weight room to extra meals throughout the day. Parham, who always had the height for the position, standing 6 feet, 5 inches, is now 245 pounds, a veteran in a room full of unproven players, and ready to be the go-to guy. "Dylan Parham is a guy we're really excited for," head coach Dave Doeren said at ACC Kickoff. "He's been injured a lot in his career. He's worked really hard. He's in a position to excel at that spot." Parham has played in 32 games since the 2017 season, making him one of the most experienced players on the roster. - Raleigh News Observer

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall has been named to The Manning Award watch list, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, it was announced on Thursday. The list includes 32 of the top quarterbacks in the nation heading into the 2021 season. The winner will again be selected by a voting panel, which includes national media and each of the Mannings, after the bowls. The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton, and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting. Six of last year's Manning Award finalists are included on this year's watch list in Matt Corral (Ole Miss), Dillon Gabriel (UCF), Sam Howell (North Carolina), Brock Purdy (Iowa State), Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati), and McCall (Coastal Carolina). - Coastal Carolina Football

Wide receiver Thayer Thomas is also entering his fifth preseason camp. Thomas, who was second on the team in receptions a year ago, has seen plenty of fall practices and can tell when something is different. He noticed something about the first day that could be a good sign of things to come. "I don't ever remember being this clean coming into a fall camp for a first practice," Thomas said. "I don't think we had one turnover, it just seemed like everybody was on the same page, just a veteran group that knows how to practice at this point. Very excited to go from here. We were just happy with how clean it went today."

Thomas credited that cleanliness to a few things. First, having a full spring practice unlike last year helps. The group being so experienced also plays a huge part. The third thing, as Thomas explained, is the team taking care of and trusting each other on the field. "I can trust the defensive guys aren't going to try and take my head off," Thomas said. "Because we know each other's value and importance on this team. We just have good trust on both sides of the ball." N.C. State returns 20 starters and got some surprising returns in super seniors C.J. Riley, Emeka Emezie, Tyrone Riley and Daniel Joseph, all guys who took advantage of an extra year. - Raleigh News Observer

The transfer portal was good to the Wolfpack this off season, as the team landed some guys who should come in and make immediate impacts. On the defensive side of the ball, Corey Durden and Cyrus Fagan both came in from Florida State. Derrek Pitts, Jr. transferred from Marshall. Pitts, a cornerback, and Fagan, a safety, are expected to be in the secondary rotation right away. Pitts (6-1, 182) might steal a starting role at cornerback.

Durden (6-4, 310) will push C.J. Clark for the nose tackle position, replacing NFL rookie Alim McNeill, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions. On the other side of the ball, massive offensive guard Chandler Zavala (6-5, 325), a former Division II All-American at Fairmont State, could make his presence on the offensive line felt right away. N.C. State will be looking to replace Joe Sculthorpe at guard and Zavala looks like the perfect candidate. "We've brought in some transfers that are good players that were starters at their school," Doeren said. "They want to start for us, too." - Raleigh News Observer

When wide receiver Emeka Emezie decided to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA after a season lost to a global pandemic, N.C. State was the beneficiary, returning its top pass catcher from last season. With Emezie back for a fifth season, the Wolfpack returns nine of its top 10 receivers from 2020. The only missing piece - and it's a big one - is 6-foot, 7-inch tight end Cary Angeline, who is currently in preseason camp with the Arizona Cardinals. Angeline caught 27 passes for 410 yards a year ago, a safety blanket for N.C. State quarterbacks in the red zone. Even with Angeline gone, quarterback Devin Leary returns a group of wide outs who combined for 222 of the 252 passes caught last season. That group includes the top three receivers from last season: Emezie (47-738), Thayer Thomas (42-529), and Devin Carter (29-477). - Raleigh News Observer

Coastal Carolina redshirt sophomore quarterback Grayson McCall has been named one of 35 "players to watch" for its 2021 Player of the Year award, The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced on Friday. The award is the nation's fourth-oldest individual college football accolade. There are 25 offensive players (13 quarterbacks, eight running backs, and four receivers/tight ends) on the preseason watch list along with 10 from the defensive side of the ball.

In all, 29 schools and 11 conferences (including independents) are represented on the list with Iowa State having four players on the list. Defending national champion Alabama has two players on the watch list, along with Notre Dame and Clemson. Already named to both the 2021 Maxwell Award preseason watch list and the 2021 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award watch list, McCall continues to add to his preseason honors by being recognized by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. - Coastal Carolina Football

Western Kentucky football specialists Brayden Narveson and John Haggerty III are included on preseason watch lists, the school announced Wednesday. Narveson earned a spot on the Lou Groza Award Watch List, while Haggerty was named to the Ray Guy Award Watch List. The Hilltoppers were one of 12 programs with both a kicker and a punter honored. After transferring to WKU in the summer of 2020, Narveson won the starting kicking job during fall camp and didn't look back, producing one of the most accurate campaigns in WKU's 102-season program history. The redshirt sophomore transfer made 13-of-14 field-goal attempts and was 27-of-27 on extra-point tries in 2020, scoring 66 total points in 12 games. His 93% field-goal mark tied for third among all FBS kickers and ranked second for a single season all-time in WKU history to Garrett Schwettman's 15-of-16 (94%) performance in 2015. - BG Daily News
