His blunt assessment revealed plenty about the transition. Virginia wrapped up spring drills Saturday with its Blue-White Game and before Cavaliers senior quarterback Brennan Armstrong departed Scott Stadium, he answered a question regarding the togetherness of the Hoos' veteran nucleus in the aftermath of new coach Tony Elliott's first spring. Armstrong said UVa's core is much tighter, and his response left no doubt about how those older, experienced players have embraced the fresh direction Elliott has for the program. "There's a lot of things new," Armstrong said, "but I tell them it has to be new. 'What we did last year was 6-6, guys,' and we're all trying to buy into that." Elliott said Armstrong has believed in him and his staff since they arrived.

The quarterback made frequent visits to the McCue Center for film study in an effort to learn Elliott and new offensive coordinator Des Kitchings' system prior to the start of spring practices. The left-handed signal-caller furthered his quest to accelerate the process, according to his coach, throughout those sessions, too. "I'm proud of Brennan," Elliott said. "He made a decision to come back and then some of his buddies decided not to come back, but he still stuck with it. He had to do the best that he could, and I saw him just lead and grow as a leader." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Grayson McCall threw four touchdown passes and Coastal Carolina held off Northern Illinois 47-41 in the Cure Bowl on Friday night, with the game ending with the Huskies at the Chanticleers 4. McCall was 22 for 30 for 315 yards, and Braydon Bennett ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns on six carries to help Coastal Carolina (11-1) win 11 games for the second consecutive year. Bennett also caught four passes for 47 yards and a TD. "He just operates, he's a smooth operator," Coastal Carolina coach Jamey Chadwell said about McCall. "As a coach, if he misses a play, you're like, "What in the world is wrong with him" because he makes so many good one's." Chadwell said while there is speculation about McCall's future, "we're confident that he loves Coastal and he's going to be here with us and finish out his career." It was also Coastal Carolina's first bowl victory. The Chanticleers lost in their first bowl appearance last year, 37-34 in overtime to Liberty.

"Pretty cool," McCall said. "Definitely a team effort. I don't think I played by best game but but all my teammates propelled me forward." Jay Ducker ran for 146 yards on 24 carries, and Antario Brown added 105 yards and 12 attempts for Northern Illinois (9-5). Rocky Lombardi completed 20 of 33 passes for 181 yards and two scores. "Couldn't be more proud of their fight," NIU coach Thomas Hammock said. "This could be a launching pad for us into the 2022 season." NIU's roster has just seven seniors, and includes 71 players who graduated from high school in 2020 or 2021. The Huskies are the first team in FBS history to win its conference championship game one season after going winless (0-6). Lombardi also had picked up 66 yards including a touchdown on eight carries. - Coastal Carolina/AP College Football

Coastal Carolina star quarterback Grayson McCall said Wednesday he is committed to playing college football next year. But will that be at CCU? McCall intimated following a team practice for the Tailgreeter Cure Bowl that he has considered a transfer from CCU. The Chants' season will end with Friday night's bowl game against Northern Illinois at Exploria Stadium in Orlando. When asked if he had put any thought into leaving college after being at CCU for three years, or if he had put any thought into transferring, McCall said: "Obviously, it's been a thought in the back of my mind. But up to this point, I'm focused on winning this bowl game. I'll be back. I'll be playing college football again next year. So there's a lot to think about, but I'll obviously focus on this last objective for the guys, the seniors." Coastal head coach Jamey Chadwell said Wednesday afternoon that he has discussed the possibility of McCall transferring with the QB he recruited out of Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail, N.C., and inserted as the starter in last year's season opener at Kansas. - Myrtle Beach Online

2021 ALL-SUN BELT FIRST TEAM (COACHES): QB - Grayson McCall, Coastal Carolina (RS So., QB - Indian Trail, N.C.),...McCall, who was the 2020 Sun Belt Player and Freshman of the Year, was once again named to the All-Sun Belt first team this season, as the redshirt sophomore quarterback was 9-1 on the season as a starter while missing two games due to an upper-body injury. A Davey O'Brien and Maxwell Award semifinalist, as well as a two-time Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week honoree, McCall leads all of NCAA FBS in passing efficiency (207.9) which would shatter the NCAA single-season record of 203.1 set by Mac Jones of Alabama last season.

Despite missing two games and playing only the first half in two other games due to blowout wins, McCall's numbers in quality statistics are outstanding.   Quarterback Brennan Armstrong, awaiting a grade from the NFL's draft advisory board, has no plans to transfer from Virginia. Armstrong, who attended new UVA football coach Tony Ellliott's introductory press conference Monday, said he'll either turn pro or return to the Cavaliers. "I don't think I'm ever transferring," said Armstrong. "I'm not going to transfer. It's either here or the NFL. Me and Coach Elliott will sit down and talk about a bunch of stuff and figure things out, and then make my decision off that." This season, his second as UVA's starting quarterback, Armstrong has set school records for passing yards (4,449), total offensive yards (4,700) and touchdown passes (31). He led the Cavaliers to a 6-2 start before suffering a rib injury during a road loss to BYU on Oct. 30. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
