  A push is underway at UNR to erect a statue of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. A Facebook group made up of more than 500 members has launched the campaign. Kaepernick, a star quarterback for the Wolf Pack in 2007-10, made national news for kneeling during the national anthem while with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016. He took the action to protest police brutality toward African-Americans, an action that was highly controversial at the time but is now more widely supported. The statue would be of Kaepernick kneeling in front of Mackay Stadium. "This is a win-win for the school, especially if the statue is largely funded by alumni," the group posted. "It would make a very powerful statement to future students, especially black ones." - Las Vegas Review Journal

  Adrian Jackson was in line to compete for playing time on the edge last season until a preseason foot injury ended his true sophomore season. With La'Mar Winston Jr. completing his eligibility, the strong-side linebacker spot is open for the taking and even coming off injury, Jackson is the clear front runner. The depth chart is thin though so preseason camp competition will be intriguing, though the position is not utilized heavily. Jackson returned to the field for the shorted spring practice and is the obvious choice to take over at Sam linebacker.

He's got the speed to bring a presence off the edge and has enough size to matchup with receivers or running backs in coverage. "He's explosive," defensive coordinator Andy Avalos said. "He's well on his way to getting back and doing his thing out there and we're excited about that because that gives us another guy off the edge that can absolutely get off the ball and go. We're extremely excited about his progress and where he's going." - The Oregonian

  The Wolf Pack football team had a player drafted, after all. Nevada receiver Brendan O'Leary-Orange was selected in the fourth round of the Canadian Football League draft on Thursday. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers selected O'Leary-Orange with the 37th pick of the eight-round draft. O'Leary-Orange was recruited out of Toronto, joining the Wolf Pack for the 2015 season. He played in 35 career games for Nevada, finishing with 61 receptions for 941 yards and eight touchdowns. His long reception came as a sophomore, a 55-yard score at Colorado State. A total of 73 players were selected in the 2020 CFL draft. The league drafts only from Canadian universities and Canadians who played at NCAA schools in the U.S. - Reno Gazette Journal

  Nevada coach Jay Norvell has a received a new five-year contract that runs through the 2024 season, the school said Tuesday. Norvell, who is 18-20 overall in three seasons, is coming off back-to-back winning seasons and consecutive bowl appearances after going 3-9 in his first year at Nevada in 2017. The new contract includes a guaranteed base salary and compensation totaling $625,000 per season plus supplemental bonuses based on athletic and academic success, athletic director Doug Knuth said. Knuth said they also agreed to boost the total salary pool available for Norvell's assistants by $250,000 beginning this fall, something Norvell said is important to growing the program. Norvell went 8-5 with a victory over Arkansas State in the Arizona Bowl in 2018. Nevada was 7-5 last season and played in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. - AP College Football

  2019 ALL-SWAC FOOTBALL SECOND TEAM (COACHES): WR Harry Ballard III, Junior, UAPB,...Ballard III (6-3, 205; Jr, St. Louis, Mo.) was fourth in the conference in both receptions (52) and receiving yards (938), and was fifth in touchdown receptions. He posted five 100-yard receiving games, and caught touchdowns in six games, including three multi-TD games. Ballard caught five passes for a season-high 147 yards and two touchdowns against Langston, and had a season-high nine receptions for 144 yards and two touchdowns against Grambling. - Arkansas-Pine Bluff Football

  2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FIRST TEAM (COACHES): DL - Dom Peterson, So., Nevada,...Peterson was named first-team All-MW for the first time in his career after proving to be the Wolf Pack's most dominant defensive lineman this season. The sophomore ranked second in the conference and led Nevada with 13.5 tackles for loss, 13 of them being solo. Peterson also ranks second in the MW with eight sacks, averaging .73 per game which is good for 28th in the nation. He recorded at least one tackle for loss in all but one game this season, and had his best performance of the year in a 21-10 win over New Mexico where he recorded four solo tackles, three for loss and two sacks. - Nevada Football

  2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Toa Taua, So., RB,...The reigning MW Freshman of the Year continued his dominant play into his sophomore campaign, as Taua led Nevada with 759 yards on the ground in 2019. On 190 attempts, he scored six touchdowns while averaging four yards per rush. Putting together 63.25 yards per game, Taua went over the century mark twice this season with a huge game against San Jose State where he totaled 160. He also put up 135 at Fresno State, where he scored the game-winning touchdown with 12 seconds left in regulation. He played in all 12 games this season, totaling double-digit carries in all but one contest. - Nevada Football

He had a career day in the Wolf Pack's win against Weber State, registering 3.5 tackles for loss. The sophomore led the Wolf Pack with 14.75 yards per reception and hauled in the longest touchdown of the season, a 75-yard catch-and-run against San Jose State. His 167 receiving yards against the Spartans in that game were the fourth-most by any MW receiver in a game this season, and was the most of his career in a single contest. - Nevada Football

  2019 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Daniel Brown, Sr., DB,...Brown cemented himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the conference this season, as he ranked tied for second in the Mountain West with four interceptions while averaging .40 per game. Those four interceptions are tied for 14th in the nation this season, while the .40 picks per game are 15th. Brown totaled 41 tackles, 29 of them solo and three tackles for loss that totaled 12 yards. His five pass breakups ranked third on the team. Brown's best game came in the season opener against Purdue when he picked off two passes, including one late in the fourth quarter to set up the game-winning field goal as time expired. - Nevada Football

He was named the Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Week on three occasions, including after week one when he drilled a 56-yard field goal to beat Purdue.   Toa Taua ran for 135 yards and scored on a 3-yard TD run with 12 seconds left to help Nevada beat Fresno State 35-28 on Saturday night. Ben Putman returned a punt 24 yards to the Fresno State 25 with 1:20 left and the game tied at 28. On the next play, Taua ran 21 yards to set up the Wolf Pack (7-4, 4-3 Mountain West) with a first-and-goal with 1:10 left. Taua gained 1 yard on his first two carries and then scored on third-and-goal, leaving only enough time for the Bulldogs (4-7, 2-5) to attempt multiple laterals on the ensuing kickoff before finally getting tackled after time expired. Quinton Conaway.s punt with 1:46 left in the game pinned the Bulldogs at their 3, and Jorge Reyna threw three incomplete passes before Fresno State punted. Reyna finished with 261 yards passing, three touchdowns and one interception. The loss knocks Fresno State out of bowl contention. - Nevada/AP College Football

  The Wolf Pack appears to have a captain's curse this season.

Linebacker Lucas Weber, a captain, suffered a season-ending broken ankle last month. Running back Kelton Moore, a captain, injured his ankle and has missed the last three games. And now receiver Kaleb Fossum, a captain, is out for the season after suffering a shoulder injury in Nevada's 17-13 win over San Diego State.
