  11/24/19 - Bryce SterkSr/2020, Montana State, 6-4, 262 (DS#20 DE) + More +

Fresh off Saturday's 48-14 win over the University of Montana, the Bobcat football team received more good news on Sunday. Montana State's season-closing four-game win streak propelled the team to the fifth seed in the 2019 FCS Playoffs, and a first-round bye. The Cats, now 9-3 overall and 6-2 in Big Sky play, host the winner of the Albany-Central Connecticut State game next Saturday. Game won't be available until next week. The first-round playoff bye is MSU's first since 2012. "You get on one side of the bracket or you get on the other side of the bracket," Choate said moments after his team's draw was announce. "With four seeded teams from the Big Sky Conference, in a quarterfinal matchup there's the potential for all four of us to play one another. We're going to play (one of) a couple of teams from the east coast (in the second round) so weather isn't as big of a factor (for the opponent). They're going to have some weather they have to contend with, but they do have to travel a good ways. We'll start digging in on those two and see what we can find out about them."

Choate is gratified that the Big Sky Conference, considered by many at the top of the FCS in terms of top-end teams, earned four seeds among the tournament's top six. Weber State enters the Playoffs seeded third, Sacramento State is fourth, the Cats fifth, and Montana sixth. "They mentioned it a couple of times (on the selection show), they talked about three-loss teams (earning seeds). But two of the losses Weber has are to FBS opponents, one of Montana's losses is to an FBS opponent, one of our losses is to an FBS opponent. (Sacramento State also lost to two FBS opponents.) We beat each other up a little bit, but I think the committee recognized the quality of the league overall and rewarded us with those seeds." - Montana State Football

Lane Sumner ran for 90 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries. He also caught two passes for 35 yards. Rovig's 2-yard TD catch of a pass by Kevin Kassis was a career first and his two TD passes were career-first TD receptions for Jaden Smith and Derryk Snell. MSU's final score was the Kassis pass to Rovig. Kassis, a wide receiver, lined up at quarterback with Rovig split out to the left.   Logan Jones ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns and Montana State defeated Western Illinois 23-14 on Saturday. Jones, a senior who more than doubled his career rushing total of 152 yards, started in place of injured Isaiah Ifanse. Jones opened the scoring with a 14-yard run in the first quarter and added MSU's only other touchdown on an 87-yard jaunt in the third quarter. The game was tied at 7 at halftime before MSU (No. 15 in FCS Coaches' Poll) scored the first 10 points of the third quarter, the touchdown coming on Jones' long run. Western Illinois cut it to 17-14 on a 3-yard run by Jared Drake that capped an 8-play, 75-yard drive.

Western Illinois (0-3) drove toward a go-ahead score and reached the MSU 25 before the Bobcats' Damien Washington intercepted a pass by Connor Sampson. Montana State (2-1) drove deep into Leathernecks territory but WIU held for a field goal and again drove for the potential go-ahead score. The Leathernecks reached the MSU 13-yard line, but offensive holding and two incomplete passes left them facing 4th-and-14 from the 18. They settled for a 35-yard field-goal attempt that was missed by Nathan Erickson. Montana State took possession with 6:57 remaining and drove to the WIU 30, facing 4th-and-5 with 2:45 to go. Tristan Bailey, who was good on all three of his tries, kicked a 47-yard field goal for the final margin. Sampson was 18 of 35 for 281 yards with a touchdown and an interception. MSU's Casey Bauman was 16 of 30 for 149 yards. - AP College Football
