  11/02/19 - Tucker RovigrSr/2023, Montana State, 6-4, 225 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Tucker Rovig threw for 197 yards and two touchdowns and caught one touchdown pass and Montana State beat Southern Utah 42-7 on Saturday. The Bobcats (6-3, 3-2 Big Sky Conference) raced to a 42-0 halftime lead and held the Thunderbirds scoreless until 5:06 remaining in the game. MSU linebacker Troy Andersen had two sacks, three tackles for loss, an interception and batted down a pass at the line of scrimmage. He also ran for 16 yards on the first play of the game. "Defensively, we stood tall today," MSU coach Jeff Choate said. "We played aggressive and we played to win."

Chris Helbig completed 14 of his first 15 passes for the Thunderbirds (2-8, 1-5), but was intercepted on the lone incompletion by Amandre Williams, who returned it to the SUU 13-yard line. Lane Sumner ran for 90 yards and two touchdowns on just 13 carries. He also caught two passes for 35 yards. Rovig's 2-yard TD catch of a pass by Kevin Kassis was a career first and his two TD passes were career-first TD receptions for Jaden Smith and Derryk Snell. Smith's covered 47 yards, while Snell's was 10 yards. "Those guys performed when their number was called," Choate said. "That's what creates more opportunities for them." MSU's final score was the Kassis pass to Rovig. Kassis, a wide receiver, lined up at quarterback with Rovig split out to the left. Kassis took the snap and ran right before stopping and throwing back to Rovig, who was in the back corner of the end zone on his knees to make the catch. - AP College Football

Travis Jonsen ran in the game-winning touchdown from 9 yards and Montana State blew a 21-point lead but hung on to beat Cal Poly 34-28 in overtime on Saturday night. Cal Poly (2-3, 1-1 Big Sky Conference) had the ball first in OT, but Colton Theaker missed a 48-yard field goal attempt. Montana State (5-1, 2-0) needed three plays, all Jonsen runs, to get to the end zone for the win.

Drew Hernandez's 3-yard run tied it at 28 for Cal Poly with 7:05 left in regulation. The teams traded punts, Montana State's Tristan Bailey then missed a 50-yard field goal attempt and Jalen Hamler threw an interception that ended Cal Poly's drive at the Montana State 39 with 8 seconds left. The Bobcats ran two plays, failing to score. The Bobcats scored 28 straight points capped by Jonsen's first TD run, a 13-yarder that made it 28-7 with 2:19 left in the third quarter.   09/14/19 - Brayden KonkolSr/2020, Montana State, 6-2, 216 (DS#15 SS) + More +

Logan Jones ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns and Montana State defeated Western Illinois 23-14 on Saturday. Jones, a senior who more than doubled his career rushing total of 152 yards, started in place of injured Isaiah Ifanse. Jones opened the scoring with a 14-yard run in the first quarter and added MSU's only other touchdown on an 87-yard jaunt in the third quarter. The game was tied at 7 at halftime before MSU (No. 15 in FCS Coaches' Poll) scored the first 10 points of the third quarter, the touchdown coming on Jones' long run. Western Illinois cut it to 17-14 on a 3-yard run by Jared Drake that capped an 8-play, 75-yard drive.

Western Illinois (0-3) drove toward a go-ahead score and reached the MSU 25 before the Bobcats' Damien Washington intercepted a pass by Connor Sampson. Montana State (2-1) drove deep into Leathernecks territory but WIU held for a field goal and again drove for the potential go-ahead score. The Leathernecks reached the MSU 13-yard line, but offensive holding and two incomplete passes left them facing 4th-and-14 from the 18. They settled for a 35-yard field-goal attempt that was missed by Nathan Erickson. Montana State took possession with 6:57 remaining and drove to the WIU 30, facing 4th-and-5 with 2:45 to go. Tristan Bailey, who was good on all three of his tries, kicked a 47-yard field goal for the final margin. Sampson was 18 of 35 for 281 yards with a touchdown and an interception. MSU's Casey Bauman was 16 of 30 for 149 yards. - AP College Football

After going into the half tied, then-No. 19 Montana State came out strong to start the third quarter. Following 28 unanswered points, the Bobcats had done everything they needed to do to secure the 38-17 upset victory over then-No. 13 Southeast Missouri State. The Bobcats win propelled them up four spots to No. 15 in this weeks' AFCA FCS Coaches' Top 25 Poll. North Dakota State received all 26 first place votes and remained the No. 1 team in the nation. The rest of the top five also remained unchanged with James Madison, South Dakota State, UC Davis and Eastern Washington sitting at spots two through five.

This week saw two teams jump into the top 25 for the first time this season. Villanova checks in at No. 23 following their 38-10 victory over Lehigh to improve to 2-0 on the season. Southeastern Louisiana checks in at No. 24 following an unexpected off-week due to Hurricane Dorian and will be back in action on September 14 at Mississippi. Week 3 features a trio of top 25 matchups as No. 1 North Dakota State travels to No. 18t Delaware. No. 5 Eastern Washington will also hit the road and travel to Alabama to take on No. 16 Jacksonville State. Last but not least, No. 9 Maine will look to bounce back against No. 8 Towson in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup. - American Football Coaches Association

2019 PRESEASON STATS FCS PAYTON AWARD WATCHLIST: Troy Andersen, Montana State, ATH, Jr., 6-3, 215,...Andersen earned First Team All-Big Sky honors at quarterback in 2018, and was named to the 2019 Preseason All-Big Sky team as a fullback. The Payton Award Watch List calls Andersen's position Athlete, which MSU head coach Jeff Choate says is appropriate. "I've talked about this," he said, "but we have to open our minds to not putting Troy in a box. We're going to use him (on offense) in ways that he'll be able to positively impact any given game the most. He could line up at running back, he'll take some snaps, he may play with Isaiah (Ifanse) in two-back sets, he may line up at tight end, he may split out as a receiver."

A 6-4, 228 lb junior from Dillon, Montana, Andersen also opens the 2019 as the projected starting Sam linebacker. He rushed for 1,412 yards and threw for 1,195 last season, and his 21 rushing touchdowns in 2018 set an MSU single-season record. His 1,927 rushing yards is already 12th in Bobcat history. He is one of five Big Sky Conference selections on the 25-player list. - Montana State Football
