  11/06/19 - Lee AutrySr/2020, Mississippi State, 6-2, 305 (DS#63 DT) + More +

Mississippi State's pre-game injury and suspension update was a mixed bag for the maroon and white ahead of the game against Arkansas. It looked promising for the Bulldogs on paper - literally. Per a statement printed on paper passed out by an MSU Athletics spokesperson, only one player from Mississippi State's two-deep depth chart was not playing. Senior defensive tackle Lee Autry was suspended for a violation of team rules for the sixth time this season. Autry is State's starting defensive tackle. - Clarion Ledger

Both Arkansas and Mississippi State entered Saturday's game having underplayed to expectations. Both its head coaches have been suggested to have tenuous, at best, job security. It was supposed to gnashing and ugly, but close. Only the ugly part came to fruition. Mississippi State snapped a four-game losing streak, kept alive its chances for a .500 season and looked like a dangerous and elite SEC team. Arkansas looked out of gas, out to sea and out of hope, having been dealt a 54-24 demolition at the hands of its closest competition in the league standings.

Mississippi State (4-5, 2-4) ran for more yards on the ground in the first half, 312, than it had in any individual game to that point. Kylin Hill, who finished with a career-high 234 yards rushing, had 198 of those in the first half-hour on just 13 carries, including three for touchdowns. Tommy Stevens, making his first start in three weeks, ran for another 60 and chipped in a 33-yard touchdown pass in the first half. Mississippi State led by four touchdowns, 38-10, at halftime. Moorhead had challenged Hill, the SEC's leading rusher, to do more the last two weeks. Before last week's game against Texas A&M, he had run for just 92 on 43 carries in the previous three games. His 150 yards versus the Aggies was just a warm-up. "He had been pushing me," Hill said. "My last couple performances, that wasn't me. I was doing too much dancing in the backfield. I can do it, but that's not my kind of style. I had to get back to being more aggressive." - Mississippi State/AP College Football

The final test for K.J. Costello came in the pregame warmups. If he could show he could hold and throw the football, he was a go. Being forced to stand on the sidelines for the past three weeks took its toll on the senior quarterback, who returned to Stanford's starting lineup and led the Cardinal to a 41-31 victory over visiting Arizona on Saturday. "It doesn't feel good. It's awful," Costello said of being sidelined. "Not playing a few weeks I have to challenge myself in terms of energy." An energized Costello threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns after missing three games with a thumb injury. He was 30 of 43 passing with no interceptions. Back-up Davis Mills, out with a calf injury, was unavailable.

"I feel a whole lot different playing than not playing. It's everything," Costello said. "When our offense plays the way we know we can, when we're able to run the ball, you can see the full complexion of the offense and what we want to do." Showing no signs of discomfort, Costello rifled passes to 12 different receivers, including a pair of touchdown passes to Simi Fehoko and one to Brycen Tremayne, whose only two career receptions have both gone for touchdowns. "I haven't hit an inside pass to Simi all year," Costello said. "It felt good. I think the game has finally slowed down for him." Fehoko agreed. "A lot of this season I've felt rushed," he said. "Today it slowed down. It's good to have him back, leading the ship." - Stanford/AP College Football

Mississippi State leads the SEC and is tied for seventh in the nation with 54 running plays of 10 yards or more. Running back Kylin Hill and freshman dual-threat quarterback Garrett Shrader lead the way in that category with 22 such plays each. Hill ranks fourth in the league with 643 yards rushing with five touchdowns. He has a knack for making first downs and 33 of his 134 carries this season have resulted in first downs. Shrader has ran for 440 yards this season and topped 100 yards in a win over Kentucky earlier this season with a career-best 125 yards rushing. - AP College Football

Something will have to give Saturday when Mississippi State brings the Southeastern Conference's leading rusher into No. 7 Auburn to face one of the league's stingiest run defenses. Mississippi State's Kylin Hill has run for over 100 yards in each of his team's first four games and has a total of 551 yards rushing — 143 more than anyone else in the SEC. Auburn (4-0, 1-0 SEC) features one of the nation's top defensive lines and allows just 89.5 rushing yards per game to rank second in the SEC. That group will be seeking revenge after Auburn lost 23-9 to Mississippi State (3-1, 1-0) last season.

"They have a lot of experience, a couple of NFL guys on the defensive line," Hill said. "The majority of the success we had last year was the play calling by coach (Joe) Moorhead, and he called the right plays against the right defense." Hill rushed for 126 yards and former Mississippi State quarterback Nick Fitzgerald ran for 195 yards against Auburn last season. Now that Fitzgerald has departed, Hill has taken over as the featured player in Mississippi State's rushing attack. Last year, Hill had 117 rushing attempts in 11 games. After four games in 2019, Hill has already totaled an SEC-leading 91 carries. The only Football Bowl Subdivision players with more carries are Oklahoma State's Chuba Hubbard (103), Boston College's A.J. Dillon (99) and Florida State's Cam Akers (98). - AP College Football

Kylin Hill rushed for 120 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mississippi State to a 28-13 victory over Kentucky on Saturday. Mississippi State (3-1, 1-0 SEC) handed the ball to Hill, the Southeastern Conference's leading rusher 26 times in the game, taking some of the offensive pressure off freshman quarterback Garrett Schrader who started in place of injured senior Tommy Stevens, a Penn State transfer. "He was a grown man out there," Kentucky coach Mark Stoops said. "You can see a great player there, with a great desire to make some tough runs. That's a very good football player."

Shrader, who played the entire second half last week, was another offensive highlight, throwing for 180 yards and rushing for 125 yards in his first full game managing the offense. "I don't know that there's too many freshman quarterbacks around the country playing like that," Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead said. Kentucky (2-2, 0-2 SEC) had 386 yards of total offense but found the end zone only once on a Kavosiey Smoke 2-yard run in the third quarter. Mississippi State consistently frustrated Stoops' team late in drives, and the Wildcats could convert on only two of their four field-goal attempts. - Mississippi State/AP College Football

Mississippi State starting quarterback Tommy Stevens' status for its Southeastern Conference opener Saturday with Kentucky remains uncertain after a shoulder injury knocked him out of each of the Bulldogs' last two games. Bulldogs coach Joe Moorhead described Stevens' situation Monday as "day to day." "It was way better (Sunday) and again today than it was at this point last week," Moorhead said. Moorhead added that Stevens felt "way better" Sunday than at this point a week ago.

Stevens played the first half of a 31-24 loss to Kansas State last week but left early in the third quarter after throwing his second interception of the game. Stevens went 7 of 15 for 100 yards with two interceptions and one touchdown pass. A week earlier, Stevens went 9 of 10 for 105 yards with two touchdown passes in a 38-15 victory over Southern Mississippi before the shoulder problem forced him to leave late in the first half. Moorhead said Mississippi State's coaching staff plans to get Stevens ready to play along while also making sure Garrett Shrader, Keytaon Thompson and Jalen Mayden. - AP College Football

Kylin Hill rushed for 123 yards and one touchdown to lead Mississippi State to a 38-15 win over Southern Mississippi Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium. Hill was injured late in the first half but returned in the second half and totaled 67 yards and his touchdown run in the second half. The Bulldogs (2-0) finished with 386 yards of total offense and collected 210 yards on the ground. "I thought we didn't flinch in the face of adversity and we had moments to do that," said head coach Joe Moorhead. "We had one guy go down on offense and then on defense. But as I've said, we have good leadership in our program and we have to be like our mascot and be a Bulldog. Our offense found a good balance and productivity. We left some things on the field but as we progress, we will clean those things up. It was just a good team win."

Southern Miss (1-1) was held scoreless in the first 40 minutes of action. The Golden Eagles got their first touchdown on a Jack Abraham 28-yard touchdown pass to Jaylond Adams. Abraham also connected with Jordan Mitchell in the final quarter on a 65-yard scoring toss. Mississippi State was efficient in the first half on offense and held a 21-0 lead at halftime. Quarterback Tommy Stevens opened the game a perfect 9 of 9 passing before being injured late in the second quarter. Stevens had touchdown passes to Osirus Mitchell and Stephen Guidry before exiting the game. The Bulldogs added a Nick Gibson 13-yard touchdown run with 42 seconds left in the first half. But the first half was costly for Mississippi State as Stevens did not return to action in the second half. The former Penn State transfer finished 9 of 10 passing for 105 yards and two touchdowns. - AP College Football

Stanford quarterback K.J. Costello will miss the 23rd-ranked Cardinal's Pac-12 opener against Southern California with an injury. Coach David Shaw said after practice Thursday that Costello had been ruled out against the Trojans on Saturday after getting knocked out of the opener against Northwestern with a head injury. Davis Mills is expected to make his first career start for the Cardinal (1-0, 0-0 Pac-12).

Costello got hurt in the closing seconds of the first half against Northwestern last week when he was hit with a forearm to the facemask while sliding on a scramble. Costello's head hit the turf and he was down for several minutes before being helped off the field. Mills completed 7 of 14 passes for 81 yards and also lost two fumbles in his most extensive collegiate action. Mills played only one game last season, throwing two passes and running the ball once. Stanford also is without star left tackle Walker Little. He also got hurt in the opener and is out indefinitely. - AP College Football

Biscardi scored a point for the 13th-straight game, every game he has played at Coastal Carolina dating back to last season, and make three field goals in the same game for the third time in his 13-game career. His 53-yard field goal in the second quarter was a career-long and tied the Coastal school record for the longest made field goal in program history. He totaled 11 points, second-most in his career for a single game and also recorded five kickoffs, including one touchback. - Sun Belt Football
