Mississippi State went back to the well. For the second year in a row, MSU landed a coveted quarterback in the transfer portal. Last year it was Tommy Stevens from Penn State. This year, former Stanford QB K.J. Costello announced his decision to leave Palo Alto and head to Starkville for his final year of eligibility. Costello made his announcement official via Twitter. Costello spent four seasons at Stanford, including a redshirt year in 2016. He started seven games as a redshirt freshman the following year before becoming the full-time starter in 2018. Costello had one of the best statistical seasons in Stanford history as a redshirt junior. He completed 269 of his 413 pass attempts (65.1%) for 3,540 yards. He threw 29 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions. - Clarion Ledger

  01/15/20 - Kylin HillSr/2021, Mississippi State, 5-11, 214 (DS#11 RB) + More +

Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill and linebacker Erroll Thompson have decided to return to school for their senior seasons rather than enter the NFL draft. The decision represents a reversal for Hill, who had said last month he planned to enter the draft. Mississippi State announced Thursday that both Hill and Thompson are staying with the Bulldogs. Hill rushed for 1,350 yards this season and ranked third in the Southeastern Conference. He gained 5.6 yards per carry, ran for 10 touchdowns and earned first-team all-SEC honors. Hill said in a tweet that "there's some unfinished business to take care of with my brothers. The work has already begun. Let's ride." Thompson has recorded 217 career tackles, including 84 this season. Thompson said in a tweet that "our story isn't finished" and added that "there's much more to accomplish both as a player, student and teammate." Their announcements come less than a week after Mississippi State hired coach Mike Leach away from Washington State. - AP College Football

Two people with knowledge of the decision says Mississippi State has hired Washington State's Mike Leach as its new head coach. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the school has not yet officially announced the move. Leach will replace Joe Moorhead, who was fired last week after two seasons. The post-bowl game firing was unusual, but the Bulldogs landed one of the most successful head coaches in the country in Leach. In 18 years was Texas Tech and Washington State, Leach is 139-90, using his Air Raid offense to set record and win consistently at two programs that have historically struggled. - AP College Football

Mississippi State linebacker Willie Gay Jr. says he's bypassing his senior season to enter the NFL draft. Gay announced his decision Monday on Twitter. Gay, who grew up in Starkville, Mississippi, said that "this city and university will always hold a special place in my heart as the only home I've ever known." Gay recorded 48 tackles, five sacks and two interceptions in 2018. He played only five games this season and had 28 tackles, 3 1/2 tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries and one interception. He was one of 10 Mississippi State players withheld from eight games this season because of NCAA violations involving an academic tutor. - AP College Football

Mississippi State fired Joe Moorhead after just two seasons Friday, making the unusual decision to dismiss a coach after a bowl game. The Bulldogs went 14-12 under Moorhead, who was previously the offensive coordinator at Penn State. He was hired after the 2017 season when Dan Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida. "It is clear the time has come to change the leadership of our football program," Mississippi State President Mark Keenum said in a statement. "Coach Moorhead is a good man, and I have nothing but respect for him. I sincerely wish the very best for him and his wonderful family." Mississippi State scheduled an afternoon news conference. Athletic director John Cohen said associate head coach Tony Hughes will serve as interim head coach while the school searches for a permanent successor. - AP College Football

Kylin Hill has made his decision. The SEC's leading rusher has chosen to forgo his senior season and enter the 2020 NFL Draft. Hill announced his decision in a Twitter post. He mentioned that he will still play in the Music City Bowl. In his Tweet, Hill said he has spent "many days and nights" looking back on his three years at Mississippi State. The Columbus High School product said he is grateful for the opportunity that MSU has given him to pursue his dream of playing professionally. Hill has 1,347 rushing yards this season. He needs 45 more in the Music City Bowl to break Anthony Dixon's program record for the most rushing yards in a single season. Hill was named to the All-SEC First Team by the Associated Press and the All-SEC Second Team by the conference's coaches. He won the Conerly Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best college football player in the state of Mississippi. - The Clarion Ledger

2019 ALL-SEC SECOND TEAM (COACHES): RB Kylin Hill, Mississippi State,...Hill, who was a first-teamer by The Associated Press on Monday, joins Anthony Dixon (2009) and Josh Robinson (2014) as the only running backs in MSU history to earn All-SEC honors from both the AP and SEC coaches since the inception of the coaches' team in 1999. A native of Columbus, Mississippi, Hill finished the regular season with eight 100-yard rushing games, tying the single-season school record. He needs just 45 rushing yards to set the school single-season record, which is currently owned by Dixon (1,391 in 2009). Hill's 1,347 rushing yards in 12 games this year lead the SEC and rank eighth in the Power 5 among running backs. He is one of seven Power 5 running backs with 1,300-plus rushing yards and 10-plus rushing touchdowns this season. - Mississippi State Football

Cameron Dantzler has played his last game in maroon and white. The Mississippi State junior cornerback announced on Twitter on Friday afternoon that he will declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. Dantzler will not play in the team's upcoming bowl game. Dantzler thanked God for the opportunity to play at MSU, and he thanked the university, the coaching staff and his teammates for making his collegiate career successful. "After praying over it and discussing with my family, I have decided to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL," Dantzler said in the Tweet.

Danztler has five interceptions as a Bulldog, including two this season despite missing three games due to injury. He has compiled 108 total tackles and 20 passes defended in his career. Dantzler's departure means younger players will be in line for larger roles next year at cornerback. Jarrian Jones and Martin Emerson Jr. have shown flashes of promise as true freshmen. - The Clarion Ledger

Mississippi flushed away a golden chance at the Golden Egg. Luke Logan missed a 35-yard extra point after Ole Miss receiver Elijah Moore was penalized for celebrating a touchdown by crawling and pretending to urinate like a dog, and Mississippi State escaped with a 21-20 victory Thursday night in the 116th Egg Bowl. "That’s not who we are. We've been a disciplined team all year, and so just disappointed that happened," Rebels coach Matt Luke said. "That’s not who he is. Elijah is a good kid, and he just got caught up in the moment." Ole Miss (4-8, 2-6 Southeastern Conference) pulled within a point with 4 seconds remaining on Matt Corral's 2-yard pass to Moore, but Logan hooked the extra point after Moore cost the Rebels 15 yards. The extra yards also prevented Mississippi from going for a winning 2-point conversion. Mississippi State (6-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) beat Ole Miss at home for the first since 2013, possibly saving second-year coach Joe Moorhead's job. Moorhead was fiery in his defense of the job his staff has done with this team, overcoming a litany of academic suspensions and several injuries to key players. - AP College Football

Mississippi State got a rare late-season break from SEC play on Saturday and took advantage of the opportunity. Tommy Stevens had two touchdown passes and ran for another as Mississippi State defeated Abilene Christian 45-7 on Saturday. Stevens had 165 yards passing and 88 yards rushing in the Bulldogs' final nonconference outing of the season. Kylin Hill added 153 yards rushing and had 88 yards receiving and a touchdown for Mississippi State (5-6). The Bulldogs rolled up 577 yards of offense and had 372 yards rushing.

"We did some good things in the run game and our defense held them to seven points," said Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead. "But at the end of the day I was pleased with the win and we're ready to move forward with Egg Bowl week. We needed to execute in all three phases and have a sense of urgency and we saw that at times." Hill averaged 9.6 yards per carry against Abilene Christian and his 88-yard touchdown reception was the longest of his career. For the season the junior tailback has now rushed for 1,325 yards, which leads the SEC. "I've changed my running style and you have to change it up when they stack the box," said Hill. "I can't make too many moves and I have to be decisive." - Mississippi State/AP College Football
