Mo Ibrahim and Trey Potts weren't cloaked in bubble wrap during spring practices in March, but the affect was the same as the Gophers' top running back duo watched as teammates went through contact drills and scrimmages. That will change on Monday. After serious injuries ended their 2021 seasons by early October, Ibrahim and Potts have been cleared for full contact and will have a month to prepare for the season opener against Jerry Kill-coached New Mexico State on Sept. 1 at Huntington Bank Stadium.

Ibrahim ruptured his Achilles tendon in the season opener against Ohio State, then Potts suffered an undisclosed injury in the win over Purdue a month later. Potts' ailment was severe enough to cause a six-night hospital stay in Indiana. At Big Ten Media Days on Tuesday, head coach P.J. Fleck said Ibrahim was "full strength" and "ready to roll." Fleck said the program will try to be smart with Ibrahim during preseason camp, giving him the scrimmage-type hits he needs to reacquaint himself with the physical rushing style that has brought the 2020 Big Ten running back of the year so much success. "So, when he gets to the game, that last step (live contact) isn't a worry," Fleck said. - Star Tribune

Gophers football players launched their own name image and likeness club on Wednesday. The Twin Cities NIL Club will be open to fans, where a $199 membership create an "access pass" for various interactions with players and to view player-created content. Roughly 1,000 memberships will go on sale in July, and revenue will be shared equally among every participating Gophers team member, they said in a letter circulated on social media.

All NCAA athletes have had a calendar year to be compensated by organizations in exchange for work or services, and Minnesota's football team is believed to be the first Gophers team to start its own NIL club. "We have always known that we have some of the best fans in the nation," sixth-year quarterback Tanner Morgan said in a Twitter post. "New we get to show the fans that we care." Gophers players are working with Yoke Gaming, a third-party platform that handles infrastructure for these nascent clubs. Players from Michigan State and Notre Dame represent two existing groups to have partnered with Yoke, a web site that started as an opportunity to connect fans with athletes as athletes play video games. Jeremiah Carter, the U's compliance director, said in an interview Wednesday the U wrote its first NIL policy last summer to provide guidance and "put up as few barriers as possible" on what student-athletes can take advantage of in this new frontier of college sports. - Pioneer Press

Minnesota has won as many as nine games in a season 10 times in its 140-year history, with six of those coming under coach Henry L. Williams from 1900-1905. The Gophers have hit the nine-win mark just four times since 1905, with three of those coming in the last six seasons. Fleck has guided the Gophers to two of those seasons. Quarterback Tanner Morgan had the best season of his career in 2019, under the direction of coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca. That season, he completed 66% of his passes for 3,253 yards, 30 TDs and 7 INTs. In the past two seasons combined (20 games) with coordinator Mike Sanford, Morgan completed 59% of his passes for 3,418 yards, 17 TDs and 14 INTs. Ciarrocca is back in the coordinator role this year. - Daily Camera

Minnesota had six kickoff times announced by the Big Ten on Thursday, including its start against Penn State at 6:30 p.m. at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. This might be Penn State's "whiteout" game, where more than 100,000 fans in attendance wear the same color. The last time the U traveled to Penn State in 2016, then-Nittany Lions running back Saquon Barkley's overtime touchdown run propelled them to a 29-26 win. In 2019, No. 13 Minnesota topped No. 5 Penn State 31-26 to win back the Governor's Victory Bell in Minneapolis.

The Gophers had five other start times announced for the 2022 season. The season opener against Jerry Kill's New Mexico State squad is at 8 p.m. Sept. 1 at Huntington Bank Stadium. The nonconference home games against Western Illinois (11 a.m. Sept. 10) and Colorado (2:30 p.m. on Sept. 17). The Big Ten home opener, which is also homecoming, against Purdue will start at 11 a.m. on Oct. 1. After the U's idle week, U's road game at Illinois will start at 11 a.m. Oct. 15. - Pioneer Press

The Gophers football program didn't suffer any significant departures before the NCAA transfer portal deadline last weekend. Minnesota had nickel back Sol Brown, punt returner/receiver Brock Annexstad, receiver Jonathan Mann, linebacker Ben Wileman and punter Daniel Sparks enter the portal before the NCAA cutoff. The most substantial player was Annexstad, its primary punt returner in 2021. The NCAA set Sunday as the deadline for players to leave their current school and still maintain eligibility at their new destination next season.

After spring ball ended with Saturday's game, Gophers head coach P.J. Fleck said: "Hopefully we keep everybody here." While that didn't pan out, Minnesota did avoid losing another impact player similar to when Mar'Keise "Bucky" Irving departed amid spring practices on April 8. The tailback from Illinois announced Sunday he will join the Oregon Ducks. Annexstad, a former walk-on from Norseland, Minn., was awarded a scholarship in 2018 and played in 21 games. He had nine returns for 71 yards last season. His brother, quarterback Zack Annexstad, transferred from Minnesota to Illinois State after the 2021 season. - Pioneer Press
