  11/05/22 - Mohamed IbrahimrSr/2023, Minnesota, 5-08, 203 (DS#22 RB) + More +

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 128 yards and two second-half touchdowns, and backup quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis brought Minnesota back from a 10-point halftime deficit in the Gophers' 20-13 victory over Nebraska on Saturday. The Gophers (6-3, 3-3 Big Ten) beat the Cornhuskers for a fourth straight year and became bowl-eligible for the fourth time in coach P.J. Fleck's six seasons. Nebraska (3-6, 2-4) lost its third straight game. Kaliakmanis, who took over at the start of the third quarter after Tanner Morgan was injured on the final play of the first half, led the Gophers to scores on four of his first five possessions. Ibrahim's 3-yard run finished an 86-yard drive that tied it 10-10 and Matthew Trickett's 49-yard field goal gave the Gophers the lead. Ibrahim ran in from 3 yards after Terell Smith intercepted a Chubba Purdy pass to set up Minnesota at the Nebraska 33. The Huskers turned over the ball on downs near midfield on their final possession, and the Gophers ran out the clock.

Ibrahim, held to 18 yards on eight carries in the first half, went over 100 yards for a Bowl Subdivision-best 17th straight game. He finished with 32 carries, his third straight game with at least 30. Purdy made his first start in place of Casey Thompson, who was held out after injuring a nerve in his right (throwing) elbow against Illinois last week. The Huskers scored on their first two possessions, with Purdy running in from 2 yards and Timmy Bleekrode kicking a 24-yard field goal. The Huskers' next four possessions netted 25 yards and Purdy began alternating with Logan Smothers early in the third quarter. Minnesota could get nothing going in the first half against the worst defense in the Big Ten. The Huskers held the Gophers to their fewest rushing yards (minus-7 yards) and total yards (31) in a half under Fleck. They also recorded three sacks against a Minnesota offense that had given up a Big Ten-low seven through eight games. Morgan, injured when sacked by Ty Robinson, was knocked out of the Oct. 15 game at Illinois in the fourth quarter with a concussion and he missed the next game against Penn State before starting last week against Rutgers. - Minnesota/AP College Football

  10/29/22 - Mohamed IbrahimrSr/2023, Minnesota, 5-08, 203 (DS#22 RB) + More +

Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns on 36 carries to lead Minnesota past Rutgers 31-0 on Saturday to stop a three-game losing streak. Quarterback Tanner Morgan crisply returned from a concussion that kept him out of the previous game for the Gophers (5-3, 2-3 Big Ten), who enjoyed a 19-play, 99-yard drive on their first possession that drained 10:24 off the clock. They converted 13 of 19 third downs and were in full control on this sun-drenched 69-degree afternoon, turning the second half into a snoozer and giving coach P.J. Fleck a victory over his mentor and former boss Greg Schiano. The Gophers had the ball for 41:02. Minnesota's revived defense produced a punishing and unrelenting performance against a Scarlet Knights team missing leading rusher Samuel Brown V and still dealing with quarterback instability.

Gavin Wimsatt made his second career start, going 6 for 17 for 68 yards. He threw the first of two interceptions by Tyler Nubin at the Rutgers 33 early in the fourth quarter that set up Ibrahim's third score and put the game out of reach. That was Ibrahim's 46th career touchdown, breaking the all-time program record held by Darrell Thompson, who cheered the feat from his perch in the radio broadcast booth. Wimsatt was replaced by Noah Vedral, the sixth-year player who started the previous three games, when he took a shoulder-to-shoulder hit at the end of a run and had his head snap back hard against the turf midway through the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights (4-4, 1-4), who are chasing their first winning record since their inaugural Big Ten season, had just 134 total yards of offense in the type of game that got offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson fired earlier this month and replaced on an interim basis by Nunzio Campanile. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Tyler scored on a 20-yard run that capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive and made it 13-3 midway through the third. Brett Gabbert completed 21 of 38 passes for 222 yards and his 9-yard touchdown run capped the scoring early in the fourth for the Redhawks.   09/24/22 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Tanner Morgan threw for 268 yards and three touchdowns and Mohamed Ibrahim rushed for 103 yards and a score to lead Minnesota to a 34-7 rout over struggling Michigan State in the Big Ten opener for both schools. The Gophers (4-0) are off to their best start since they began the 2019 season 9-0. Minnesota dominated Michigan State (2-2) on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Spartans on offense 508-240 while also grabbing two interceptions and a fumble. "I've got to take my hat off to our players," said Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck. "They just played incredibly hard. I couldn't be more proud of them right now in this moment." Despite missing star receiver Chris Autman-Bell, who is out for the season following a leg injury last week, the Gophers' offense was dominant.

Minnesota did not punt, converted 10 of 12 third-down attempts, had possession of the ball for 42:30 and Morgan hit 10 different receivers. "I've been saying it for a long time now that we have a lot of guys that can go make plays for us," Morgan said. "We saw that today - a lot of guys that were involved in the game plan and made plays. It makes my job really easy." Michigan State appeared ready to rally from a 17-point deficit at the start of the second half by driving to the Minnesota 5-yard line but Thomas Rush punched the ball free from quarterback Payton Thorne and Justin Walley made the recovery. "Every week we emphasize turnovers," Walley said. "Today we had three. That's the amount we should get every week or strive to get every week." The Spartans avoided the shutout when backup quarterback Noah Kim tossed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Germie Bernard with 17 seconds left. The Gophers scored on their first three possessions to go up 17-0. Morgan, who completed 23 of 26 passes for 268 yards, capped off the next drive when he hit Daniel Jackson with a 23-yard touchdown pass. Matthew Trickett followed with a 26-yard field goal. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota annnounced Monday that sixth-year wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell will have season-ending surgery on his right leg, a big loss for the unbeaten Gophers as they begin Big Ten play without their best pass catcher. Autman-Bell was hurt in Minnesota's 49-7 win over Colorado on Saturday, when he landed awkwardly while trying to catch on off-target throw in the second quarter. He grabbed his leg in pain, needed help leaving the field and was sent to a hospital for further examination. "Your heart breaks for him, because he's worked incredibly hard," coach P.J. Fleck said. The procedure will take place on Wednesday.

Fleck didn't specify the diagnosis, other than to describe the injury as to Autman-Bell's lower leg. The Gophers will apply to the NCAA for a medical redshirt that would allow him to return for a seventh season, should he wish to. The native of Kankakee, Illinois, who was in Fleck's first recruiting class at Minnesota after flipping his commitment and following him from Western Michigan, redshirted that first year. The 2020 season didn't count against anyone's eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic. With 1,970 career receiving yards, Autman-Bell ranks ninth in program history. He caught a 39-yard touchdown pass against Colorado before he was hurt. The team's leading returning receiver from 2021, when he had 36 catches for 506 yards and six touchdowns, Autman-Bell has again been quarterback Tanner Morgan's favored target. - AP College Football

It took until Week 3 for a player to rush for 200 yards in game. It happened four times Saturday. Eastern Michigan's Samson Evans carried 36 times for 259 yards and a touchdown against Arizona State, picking up 108 yards in the fourth quarter alone. In his 19 other career games, he had never gone for more than 89 yards. UNLV's Aidan Robbins ran 29 times for 227 yards and three TDs against North Texas. The Louisville transfer had never run for more than 84 yards in any of his previous six games. UAB's DeWayne McBride had his second career 200-yard game, carrying 28 times for 223 yards and four TDs against Georgia Southern. Minnesota's Mohammed Ibrahim had 23 carries for 202 yards and three touchdowns against Colorado, his fourth career 200-yard outing. - AP College Football

  09/19/22 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Minnesota is scoring at a rate not seen in the Twin Cities for more than a century. The Gophers' 149 combined points against New Mexico State, Western Illinois and Colorado are the most through three games since the 1916 team totaled 169 against South Dakota State, North Dakota and South Dakota. The caveat is that Minnesota's first three opponents are a combined 0-10, and 0-3 Western Illinois is from the Championship Subdivision. Things get real this week when the Gophers visit Michigan State for their Big Ten opener. - AP College Football
