  09/28/19 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

Tanner Morgan threw for 396 yards and four touchdowns, both career highs, to help Minnesota hold off Purdue 38-31 on Saturday. The Golden Gophers (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) have won six straight overall and four in a row outside Minneapolis for the first time since 2003. Purdue (1-3, 0-1) has lost two straight home games and this one was never really close after the Boilermakers lost starting quarterback Elijah Sindelar and All-American receiver Rondale Moore on the same first-quarter play. Sindelar appeared to hurt his left shoulder when he was sacked and Moore appeared to suffer a lower left leg injury while running down the field.

Morgan took full advantage by completing his first 14 passes, throwing for 298 yards in the first half - four short of his previous career best - and running an offense that needed only two quarters to produce nine plays of 16 or more yards. He finished 21 of 22 with no interceptions. It didn't take long for the Gophers to seize control, either. Rodney Smith capped the first possession of the game with a 2-yard scoring run. After the Boilermakers cut the deficit to 7-3, Morgan answered with a 70-yard TD pass to Chris Autman-Bell to make it 14-3. Sindelar and Moore left on Purdue's next series, but Jack Plummer completed the drive with a 7-yard TD pass to Zander Horvath. - Minnesota/AP College Football

Minnesota running back Shannon Brooks ran five times for 5 yards in his season debut - only his second appearance since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during winter conditioning between the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He ran 22 times for 154 yards and one TD in last October's victory over Indiana but tore the ACL in his right knee during the game and missed the rest of the season. Brooks has only played in eight games since rushing for 1,359 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2015 and 2016. - Minnesota/AP College Football

  09/14/19 - Tyler JohnsonSr/2020, Minnesota, 6-1, 206 (DS#22 WR) + More +

Tyler Johnson caught three touchdown passes from Tanner Morgan, including the go-ahead score with 13 seconds left on Saturday to give Minnesota a tense 35-32 victory after two long touchdowns by Georgia Southern in the fourth quarter off miscues by the Gophers. Johnson, the star senior who deferred the NFL draft to stick with his hometown school for one more year, had 10 receptions for 140 yards in his third career three-touchdown game. On second-and-goal, Morgan floated a pass in the corner of the end zone for Johnson to grab it in front of Monquavion Brinson. The last-ditch drive netted 75 yards on 13 plays in 3:34, but a holding penalty and a sack pushed the Gophers back to their 6-yard line. Morgan hit Demetrius Douglas for 21 yards on third-and-29 and found him again on fourth down to keep the rally alive. Johnson and Rashod Bateman followed with two first-down catches apiece, before the winning score.

With 6:05 remaining and the Eagles trailing 28-20, Traver Vliem blocked Michael Lantz's 36-yard field goal attempt before Brinson grabbed it and weaved around the field for a 77-yard touchdown. After a sideline interference penalty by the Eagles pushed the 2-point conversion play back to the 18-yard line, Justin Tomlin's pass was incomplete. On the next possession, on third-and-5 near midfield, Morgan was hit by an unblocked Rashad Byrd as he cocked his arm to throw. The linebacker leaped in the air to grab the ball and ran 44 yards for the go-ahead score. The trick-play 2-point pass to left tackle Jarrod Leeds was completed, but Leeds was short of the goal line. The Gophers (3-0) outgained the Eagles (1-2) in total yardage 382-198 and stretched the longest nonconference winning streak in the FBS to 18 straight games. - Minnesota Football

Antoine Winfield Jr. spoiled Fresno State's bid for a Power 5 win for a second straight year. Winfield intercepted a pass in the end zone in the second overtime to preserve Minnesota's 38-35 come-from-behind victory over Fresno State on Saturday night with his second game-sealing interception in as many years against the Bulldogs. "It was very similar. It was like deja vu. I remember seeing the quarterback throw the ball again and I was able to make a quick speed turn and I was able to make the play," Winfield said. "I'm sure they probably hate me right now."

The Golden Gophers (2-0) tied the game twice late with Tanner Morgan throwing a 20-yard TD pass to Chris Autman-Bell on fourth down in the final minute of regulation and Morgan then scoring on a 4-yard keeper in the first overtime. Michael Lantz then made a 37-yard field goal for the Gophers on the opening possession of the second overtime before Winfield intercepted Jorge Reyna's pass to Cam Sutton to send Fresno State (0-2) to the loss. "When that ball was floating in the air, I saw (Winfield) breaking on it and we all knew what was going to happen," Morgan said. "He's a big-time player and he made a big-time play in a big-time situation." This was the second straight week Fresno State lost on a late interception in the end zone, with Reyna throwing one last week in a 31-23 loss at Southern California. - AP College Football

  09/07/19 - Matthew TrickettrSr/2023, Minnesota, 5-11, 190 (DS#23 K) + More +

Matthew Trickett's 43-yard field goal lifted Kent State to a 26-23 come-from-behind overtime victory against Kennesaw State on Saturday. The Golden Flashes came from 10 points down for the win with a 75-yard scoring pass from Dustin Crum to a wide-open Isaiah McKoy - a career-long for each - forging a 17-16 lead in the third quarter. Kennesaw State, ranked No. 9 in the STATS FCS poll, appeared on the verge of claiming its first-ever win against a Football Bowl Subdivision team when Daniel David scored a go-ahead touchdown from the 4 with under two minutes remaining. Trickett kicked a 36-yard field goal with nine seconds remaining to knot the score at 23-23 and force overtime. Matt Bahr forced a fumble when he tackled Kennesaw State's Shaquil Terry for a loss in overtime, the change of possession leading to Trickett's walk-off FG. Kent State's field hockey team was locked in an overtime battle with Maine when the game was declared a "no contest" in order for the football game to kick off on time. - AP College Football

  08/29/19 - Mohamed IbrahimrSr/2023, Minnesota, 5-08, 203 (DS#22 RB) + More +

Don't tell coach P.J. Fleck that Minnesota's narrow win against FCS South Dakota State on Tuesday wasn't good enough. The Big Ten Gophers were double-digit favorites for the season's first game against their neighbors from the southwest, who nearly beat Minnesota in 2009, long before Fleck joined the Gophers. So, when Mohamed Ibrahim finally put the Gophers ahead late in the fourth quarter, Fleck was ready to enjoy a win no matter how others perceive the narrow victory.

"There's hard wins, there are no bad wins, and that is my message to the football team today," Fleck said. "There are no bad wins. That's a really good football team out there." Ibrahim plunged up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown run with 5:39 remaining and Minnesota avoided an upset with a 28-21 win at home against South Dakota State on Thursday night. Winston DeLattiboudere recovered a fumbled exchange between Jackrabbits quarterback J'Bore Gibbs and running back Pierre Strong with South Dakota State holding a 21-20 lead in the fourth quarter. Minnesota capped a five-play, 34-yard drive with Ibrahim's touchdown to pull ahead and extend the nation's longest winning streak of nonconference games to 16 in a row. - AP College Football

  08/05/19 - Tanner MorganrSr/2023, Minnesota, 6-0, 204 (DS#21 QB) + More +

The foot injury that Zack Annexstad suffered last week removed all suspense from the Gophers' starting quarterback battle. With Annexstad out indefinitely, Tanner Morgan is written in as the starter for the Aug. 29 opener against South Dakota State and possibly for the rest of the season. "Tanner's played a lot of football for us," coach P.J. Fleck said last weekend, adding that both Morgan and Annexstad are starting caliber. "Tanner's won some huge games for us."

Morgan opened last year as the backup but started the final six games when injuries forced Annexstad to the sideline. Morgan went 4-2, including big victories at Wisconsin and in the Quick Lane Bowl against Georgia Tech. He completed 58.6% of his passes for 1,401 yards, with nine touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2018. - Minneapolis Star Tribune

2019 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY WATCH LIST: Winston DeLattiboudere, Minnesota, Senior, DL,...DeLattiboudere, a three year starter at defensive end, is passionate about community service. In less than a year span, he put in over 65 documented hours of community service in local schools around the metro area. He frequently visits elementary or middle schools where he speaks and leads reading and game sessions.

The 65 hours doesn't even count his routine visits to the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital and other one-off opportunities that DeLattiboudere participates in. One thing that DeLattiboudere is most excited for as he enters his senior season is a school supply project that he will be putting on to send school supplies to a primary school in Jamaica and Hmong International in Minneapolis. DeLattiboudere has family connections in Clarendon, Jamaica and still has cousins at the school he plans to send supplies to. - Minnesota Football
