  10/08/22 - Cornelius JohnsonrSr/2024, Michigan, 6-3, 212 (DS#35 WR) + More +

Cornelius Johnson's 29-yard touchdown catch midway through the third quarter Saturday gave No. 4 Michigan the lead and the jolt it needed to pull away from Indiana 31-10 in an emotional game in which a Wolverines' coach was taken to a hospital. Michigan improved to 6-0 for the second straight season, the first time they've achieved that feat since 1976-77. Johnson's big play came after assistant coach Mike Hart was carted off the field in the first quarter for an undisclosed medical issue. Hart went down unexpectedly after Indiana tied the score at 7. Many Wolverines players dropped to one knee while coach Jim Harbaugh and other assistants watched trainers tend to Michigan's running game coordinator. The emotional toll appeared to hurt the defending Big Ten champs, who went into the locker room tied at 10 with the Hoosiers (3-3, 1-2).

But after hearing Hart talk to the team at halftime, the Wolverines (3-0 Big Ten) promised to win the game for their coach — and they didn't disappoint. The first of Johnson's two TD receptions capped Michigan's 98-yard drive to open the second-half and the defense only allowed 29 total yards over the final two quarters until Indiana's final drive. Luke Schoonmaker and Johnson caught fourth-quarter TD passes to seal it. J.J. McCarthy was 28 of 36 with 304 yards, three TDs and one interception. Schoonmaker caught nine passes for 67 yards and Blake Corum had 124 yards rushing on 25 carries after picking up 50 on his first run of the day. Corum also scored on a 1-yard run just five plays into the game. - Michigan/AP College Football

  10/01/22 - Blake CorumSr/2024, Michigan, 5-08, 205 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Blake Corum rushed for 133 yards and a touchdown, J.J. McCarthy threw for 155 yards and a touchdown and No. 4 Michigan defeated Iowa 27-14 on Saturday. The Wolverines (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten Conference) were able to consistently move the ball against the Hawkeyes (3-2, 1-1), who came into the game leading the nation in scoring defense and ranked sixth in total defense and rushing defense. Michigan had 327 yards, including 172 rushing yards. Four of Michigan's first five drives ended in points. Ronnie Bell had a 16-yard touchdown run on the opening possession. Jake Moody's two second-quarter field goals gave the Wolverines a 13-0 halftime lead, then McCarthy threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Edwards on Michigan's opening possession of the third quarter. Corum's 20-yard touchdown run with 1:19 left in the game closed the scoring for the Wolverines.

It was the sixth 100-yard rushing game of Corum's career. Corum, who had 29 carries, was coming off a career-high 243 yards in last weekend's 34-27 victory over Maryland. Michigan continued its defensive mastery of the Hawkeyes, who have scored just 20 points combined in the last three games against the Wolverines. Iowa didn't score until Kaleb Johnson's 2-yard touchdown run to start the fourth quarter, cutting the Michigan lead to 20-7. The Hawkeyes got to the Michigan 6 on their next possession, but Spencer Petras' pass to Sam LaPorta went for only 1 yard on fourth-and-2. Petras, who finished with 246 passing yards, threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Luke Lachey with eight seconds left in the game for Iowa's final points. - Michigan/AP College Football

  09/30/22 - Blake CorumSr/2024, Michigan, 5-08, 205 (DS#4 RB) + More +

What was supposed to be a two-headed rushing attack for Michigan has, due to injury, become a one-man show. No problem. Blake Corum has done the work of two running backs. The junior was given more responsibility in recent weeks and, well, ran with it. It culminated in a career performance on Saturday against Maryland in which Corum ran for 243 yards on 30 carries, both personal bests. "The vision, the low center of gravity…and the real key to his success is just how close he can get to a defender and then (make them) miss by the narrowest of margins," Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh said. "He sees the holes that a lot of people don't see," said safety Rod Moore. "It's super special being able to block for him," added lineman Zak Zinter. Corum is turning heads - of defenders, his coaches and teammates, and anyone who's seen him play this season. He's a big reason why Michigan is 4-0 and has scored more points than any of the other 130 FBS teams. - Ann Arbor News

Blake Corum rushed for a career-high 243 yards and two touchdowns and No. 4 Michigan topped Maryland 34-27 in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday. Corum, who tied the school record with five rushing touchdowns against UConn a week earlier, had a career-high 30 carries. He became the first Michigan back to rush for 200 yards since Karan Higdon in 2017. J.J. McCarthy completed 18 of 26 passes for 220 yards and two touchdowns for the Wolverines (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten). Taulia Tagovailoa completed 20 of 30 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown but was also picked off twice for the Terrapins (3-1, 0-1).

McCarthy hit Roman Wilson with a 20-yard scoring pass 44 seconds into the fourth quarter to give Michigan a 24-13 lead. Tagovailoa's 4-yard touchdown pass to Tai Felton with 9:10 left cut the Wolverines' lead to five points. The 2-point conversion attempt failed. Jake Moody's 38-yard field goal gave the Wolverines an eight-point cushion. Corum broke free on a 47-yard touchdown run with 3:31 remaining to make it 34-19. CJ Dippre caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Maryland backup quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. with 45 seconds left. Michigan held a 17-13 halftime advantage. - Michigan/AP College Football

  09/17/22 - Blake CorumSr/2024, Michigan, 5-08, 205 (DS#4 RB) + More +

Blake Corum rushed for a career-high four touchdowns in the first half and added a fifth score in the third quarter to match a school record, helping No. 4 Michigan rout Connecticut 59-0 Saturday. The Wolverines (3-0) led 38-0 at halftime before coasting in the second half of a game that looked a lot like their first two tune-ups, when they beat Colorado State 51-7 and Hawaii 56-10. The Huskies (1-3) had just 64 yards of offense in the first half, had a punt blocked and gave up a punt return for a touchdown over the opening 30 minutes. J.J. McCarthy was 15 of 18 for 214 yards, a week after coach Jim Harbaugh said he had won the quarterback competition.

Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara entered late in the first half and was roughed up. He was sacked on the first snap and was hit hard just after completing his only pass attempt. McNamara did not appear to be with his teammates on the sideline in the second half. Without the senior available in the lopsided game, Harbaugh gave several reserve quarterbacks a chance to play. Corum started the scoring barrage with a 20-yard run on the game's opening drive and had three 1-yard scores before halftime. His 11-yard touchdown late in the third quarter tied the single-game school record set by Ron Johnson in 1968 and equaled by Hassan Haskins in last year's win over Ohio State. Connecticut freshman Zion Turner was 4 of 16 for 17 yards and had 42 yards rushing. The Huskies finished with just 110 yards of offense, going 2 for 14 on third down and earning just six first downs. - Michigan/AP College Football

Michigan running back Donovan Edwards is "working through something," coach Jim Harbaugh said when asked his status for Saturday's game. Edwards, who had a 33-yard catch and rushed for a 1-yard touchdown, was limping late in the first half. He did not appear on the sideline in the second half. "I don't have an update," Harbaugh said. - Ann Arbor News

TRACKING TOP DRAFT PROSPECTS - WEEK 2: 27. Ryan Hayes, rSr, OT, Michigan, 6-6, 307, 1,...Michigan's entire line was dominant in a 56-10 win over Hawaii, now 0-3. The Wolverines rolled to 588 yards in total offense, 320 in the air and 268 on the ground. Previous week, No. 28: Michigan gained 440 total yards, with 234 of that on the ground, but left tackle Ryan Hayes had nothing to do with it. In a surprise, he was in street clothes on the sideline. The Wolverines also lost Karson Barnhart in the first quarter and shifted their line, moving guard Trevor Keegan to tackle and inserting freshman Giovanni El-Hadi at guard. No problem. Michigan scored four touchdowns rushing, surrendered just one sack and allowed two hurries. Coach Jim Harbaugh pointed out that the unit accounted for just one penalty, a hold, and "No false starts, no delay of games." He stopped short of saying it was due to good coaching. - Frank Cooney/NFL Draft Scout

  09/11/22 - J.J. McCarthyJr/2024, Michigan, 6-3, 219 (DS#4 QB) + More +

J.J. McCarthy did enough to win the job. McCarthy was sharp in his first start, throwing for three touchdowns to help No. 4 Michigan overwhelm Hawaii 56-10 on Saturday night. Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh said McCarthy will be the team's first-string quarterback next week against Connecticut. "He's earned it," Harbaugh said. McCarthy had his turn to take the first snap after Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara had a lackluster performance in the season-opening win over Colorado State as the starter. The sophomore made the most of his opportunity against the Rainbow Warriors, throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Roman Wilson on his second snap and 13-yard pass to Ronnie Bell early in the second quarter to give the Wolverines (2-0) a four-touchdown lead. "It was a near-flawless performance," Harbaugh said. "He was 11 for 12, and one was dropped." McNamara entered the game with 6:22 left in the first half and took a sack to end his first possession.

McCarthy went back in and threw for his third score, dropping back and stepping up in the pocket before connecting with Cornelius Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown late in the first half to give Michigan a 42-0 lead. "I can't remember having one like that myself," said Harbaugh, a former Michigan and NFL quarterback. McCarthy, a former five-star recruit, finished 11 of 12 for 229 yards without a turnover. "He controlled the game," said Blake Corum, who ran for 88 yards and a touchdown on nine carries. "He was confident. I expected nothing less." McNamara started the second half and the senior finished 4 of 6 for 26 yards with an interception. "He's got gravel in his guts," Harbaugh said. "He'll be ready for his next opportunity." - Michigan/AP College Football
