  05/16/20 - Tommy DoylerSr/2021, Miami (OH), 6-8, 320 (DS#14 OT) + More +

The Mid-American Conference will adopt at least two football-related austerity measures as a way of reducing costs for its member schools, according to a report. The Toledo Blade reported the conference will reduce the size of travel rosters to conference games ahead of the 2020 football season. The number of players allowed to travel for away games varies by conference. MAC rules allowed up to 76 players and will now allow 70. By comparison, the Zips had sent 70 on the road, and UA athletics department officials could not say how that would change. Additionally, the MAC mandated that hotel stays the night before home games, a common practice in collegiate football, would be eliminated, a move UA director of athletics Larry Williams mentioned was a possibility in his Thursday news conference announcing cuts to the department's budget. - Akron Beacon Journal

  12/07/19 - Brett GabbertrSr/2025, Miami (OH), 6-0, 200 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Brett Gabbert threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Jack Sorenson early in the third quarter, and Miami of Ohio controlled most of the second half, beating Central Michigan 26-21 in the Mid-American Conference title game Saturday. The RedHawks (8-5) won a record 16th MAC championship despite doing little on offense in the first half. Trailing 14-10 after two quarters, Miami took the lead on Gabbert's screen pass to Sorenson, and the RedHawks held off CMU (8-5) the rest of the way to win their first conference title since 2010. Sam Sloman kicked four field goals, including a 48-yarder with 4:06 remaining to give Miami a 23-14 lead.

CMU's Tommy Lazzaro scored on a 4-yard run with 1:24 remaining, and the Chippewas recovered an onside kick -- but were called offside. CMU was offside again on the re-kick, but it went out of bounds anyway, and Miami took over. Sloman added a 42-yard field goal with 28 seconds left. "I was ready for those last 30 seconds to be over," Sloman said. A Hail Mary by CMU fell incomplete on the final play of the game. Miami managed just 61 yards of offense in the first half but stayed in the game thanks to a couple big plays on special teams. Maurice Thomas returned the opening kickoff 97 yards, setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by Jaylon Bester. - Miami OH/AP College Football

Jaylon Bester rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown and Miami (Ohio) withstood a stern challenge from winless Akron for a 20-17 victory on Wednesday night. The RedHawks (7-4, 6-1) had already clinched the Mid-American Conference East Division berth to the MAC championship game but this victory assured an outright East title with their fifth straight win and fifth without a loss at home. Miami had a 17-3 halftime lead over the Zips (0-11, 0-7) after a Sam Sloman 44-yard field goal and rushing touchdowns of 21 yards by Tyre Shelton and a 1-yard run by Bester. The Zips closed within seven with a 64-yard pick-6 by John Lako before Sloman added another field goal just before the third quarter ended to make it 20-10. Kato Nelson passed 34 yards to Timothy Scippio as the Zips got within three early in the fourth quarter. Miami's defense had five of their school-record 11 sacks on Akron's two final possessions to thwart the upset bid. - AP College Football
